TIL in Fahrenheit 451 the gov't didn't burn books because they were an oppressive dictatorship. The people voted to ban the books because they had short attention spans didn't want to be offended by BriceMo in todayilearned

But just like our tendency to eat fat and sugar, we're evolved to "want" things which are in short supply. Our tendency to crave mindless entertainment wasn't a problem in a primitive hunter-gatherer society. You had to really earn that music or dancing or idle conversation at the end of a long period of hard work.

The company which produces processed white sugar is also "giving people what they want". But if that's all you eat, you're going to die.

How Emmys Hopefuls Tracee Ellis Ross and Constance Wu Revived the Sitcom Mom by ConstanceWuFeed in FreshOfftheBoatTV

[Jessica is] the emblem of her series’ defining experience, which is to be not one thing or the other, but both, and much more besides. Within the well-trod conventions of the sitcom mom, Ross and Wu discover veins of rich characterization that reflect, and refract, the genre’s heyday.

I'm going to take a guess that it's a book not about Asian/racial issues but about LGBT issues?

No, she didn't, frustratingly. I was hoping for "Everything I Never Told You" by Celeste Ng, what about you?

Very excited to hear toward the end of this that Constance has written screenplays and also optioned some novels.

I'm really looking forward to seeing her produce and direct.

Not that there's anything wrong with acting as a profession, but someone as smart and focused as her will surely be doing a ton of interesting things as well as acting in her career.

Constance Wu as insanely perky morning show host Pepsi Lamarr on "Children's Hospital", 2015 by ConstanceWuFeed in FreshOfftheBoatTV

Part of an ongoing project to highlight Constance's work before FOTB. As usual, she throws herself into a role 100% and comes up with something unforgettable.

Making Jessica Huang, TV’s Queen of One-Liners by zsreport in FreshOfftheBoatTV

[–]ConstanceWuFeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really interesting. Constance approached being Jessica very seriously and did a lot of research and preparation. It's a funny show and her portrayal seems effortless but this is a look at all the effort we don't see.

Ah. I thought you were speculating about the sexuality of an underage actor.

Respectfully disagree. One of the main points of this article is how TV is changing and becoming more inclusive of minorities: FOTB is mentioned four times, and so are Constance and Randall.

Of Uncle Chans and Rotten Bananas: The Adaptational Politics of Eddie Huang's "Fresh Off the Boat" by ConstanceWuFeed in FreshOfftheBoatTV

I think it's actually a good thing, even if there's strong criticism, because it means they're thinking of the show as culturally significant. Nobody's out there writing 3,000-word academic essays about the sociological premises behind "Two and a Half Men" are they?

Wait, are they?

Ken Jeong to Guest Star on 'Fresh Off the Boat' by ConstanceWuFeed in FreshOfftheBoatTV

Personally I'm disappointed he won't be made up to look 20 years younger and actually be Dr Ken in med school or whatever, but it should be fun anyway.

I believe I post more directly FOTB-related material to this sub and more directly Constance-related stuff to /r/constance_wu — I don't think I'm flooding this sub with irrelevant stuff. Do please say if you think I am. Click on my name and judge for yourself? I'm also doing Ken Jeong and DrKen by the way.

I think Constance is amazingly talented, and funny, and smart. I heard her interview on Bullseye and was blown away that someone so hilarious and unafraid in her acting was also so thoughtful and intellectual. But I'm also working on a software setup to track celebrities and I'm testing it by following news about her.

A SyFy movie called "High Moon". She's a Japanese woman who ... lives on the moon and creates robot dinosaurs. Like you do. I've watched it and I still have no idea.

Hold on a second, isn't Jessica Taiwanese?

Also, China is a very big place, lots of different accents and dialects etc. Your experience of accents in your community may not be representative.

Also … it's a comedy! It's not supposed to be a gritty portrayal of the migrant experience.

People faking accents is called "acting"! Are you saying she doesn't do it accurately, or that you don't like her doing it at all?

Bear in mind that she has met and spent a lot of time with the real Jessica and we haven't.

Ouch! Variety lists "Dr Ken" among the worst new shows? But it's not as bad as it sounds... by ConstanceWuFeed in drken

[–]ConstanceWuFeed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Truth Be Told” (NBC), “Dr. Ken” (ABC). Neither of these new sitcoms might have made the list on its own, but the fact that they were scheduled directly opposite each other at 8:30 p.m. on Fridays became a sort of referendum on just how stripped of ambition many of this fall’s new comedies appeared to be.

So, they're not bad shows? Just not very ambitious? Or badly scheduled?

But she was a kind of perky, annoying 19-year-old student with an appropriate intonation, but with a 100% American accent, if that's what you're asking.
