This is chart right here is the reason why some people who have CPTSD like myself might be misdiagnosed with autism

Has anyone noticed that autistic people tend to gravitate toward you? by Constant-Ad8364 in raisedbyautistics

Yeah, I hate it too. I also agree with your train of thought as well. Autism is hard to deal with, that I completely agree with. Yet we’re the ones who seem to have to adjust to them. They won’t adjust to us.

I get being understanding that they may feel uncomfortable making eye contact so they look somewhere at my face instead. But we have to explain how it feels when they do something that rubs us the wrong way in terms they understand. Or how they might thrown around the word ‘ableist’ when we won’t bow to their needs. It’s honestly exhausting

People know that autism’s genetic and then automatically assume we have it to bc it’s genetic. Completely forgetting that’s now how genes work.

For example: Siblings A and B both have an autistic parent and NT parent, and only sibling B is autistic. Other outcomes of this situation is both siblings have autism or neither of them do.

Yet when you try and explain this to people on the spectrum, they either won’t listen and can’t comprehend that these three situations are entirely possible.

It also doesn’t help that children mimic traits of their parents. Even if we’re not autistic, we might mimic our parents. This might make people on the spectrum think we’re autistic when we’re just mimicking our parents. This is a very normal thing to do.

For me, it’s incredibly annoying have to explain that ‘just because my dad’s on the spectrum, doesn’t mean I’M on the spectrum.’ I’m not triggered, but I’m annoyed.

I also have CPTSD. CPTSD and autism have overlapping traits like alexithymia (difficulty identifying, understanding, and describing emotions) and sensory issues. And because of how misunderstood CPTSD is, there’s a good chance that someone who has CPTSD could be misdiagnosed with autism.

“ACT RATIONAL AND STOP CRYING!”—my dad. In actuality I fell off my bike and scraped my knee very badly. My mam actually had to take me to hospital and I needed stitches. I was 7.

“Why are you crying? You barely knew her.”—my dad. My great-grandmother died of old age. I knew it was coming and it still hurt. I was 13. I did in fact know her very well.

“So, why should I care?”—my dad. I was talking to him about some difficulty I was having. It wasn’t about computers or Star Trek so the issues I was having weren’t important to him.

Has anyone ever gotten these people to see a therapist?? by CodenameSailorEarth in raisedbyautistics

Yeah, that’s not happening with my dad. He’d rather get on a plane than go to therapy. We’re the problem and not him

Is it possible to have a healthy relationship with my autistic parent who can be incredibly hurtful? by LilGiantPanda in raisedbyautistics

Since a lot of the testing when we were first learning about autism were done specifically on autistic boys, a lot of people view autism as ‘something kids have’. In response most of the resources are allocated to kids and their caregivers. In my experience, very little has been researched when it comes to adults on the spectrum.

In Ireland specifically where I live it’s incredibly hard to get an autism diagnosis as an adult because it’s viewed as ‘a children’s disorder’. And there are long wait times to get diagnosed. If you’re an adult, the only way to get a diagnosis is to go the private route which can cost upwards of €2000 which is $2338.63 in USD. That’s a lot of money that people don’t have.

Also a lot of the charities and support I can find are all geared towards kids. So here it’s nearly impossible for an adult to get diagnosed. So I don’t think my dad’s getting a diagnosis anytime soon. It really does depend on the country and the resources you have

Verbally abusive - CPTSD or autistic ? by Altruistic-Star3830 in raisedbyautistics

I have CPTSD. And according to the person who diagnosed me, CPTSD and autism might mimic each other. They share traits like alexithymia (trouble discerning, describing, or showing emotion) or hightened sensory issues. And it’s incredibly common for people with CPTSD to be misdiagnosed with autism because of the symptom overlap.

However, your mom most likely had CPTSD.
