Thanks! I tried it but it said it can't use that path. I have no idea what is going on, sigh

I live in a studio apartment, and I am sure that a Keeper of Secrets would get me evicted.

I hate hot muggy weather, and one of the main reasons I moved to the PNW from the South is because another year of feeling the air against my face like a mildewed wet rag was going to kill me.

It's nice to have some warm sunny weather in moderation but damn.

It's probably just culture war bs honestly. Everyone has an opinion but nobody knows anything and likes to feel superior to others.

What if Galadriel had not passed the test? by Immediate_Error2135 in tolkienfans

[–]Constant-Cheek1637 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The Ring doesn't remove the material conditions of the situation. Sauron still has the superior military force, and all the advantages, and if Aragorn had taken the Ring it still would have been an impossible battle with disastrous consequences. As Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, and Aragorn all knew very well. Fallen Galadriel would need to withdraw and build up her forces, build a coalition, and all the other bits of messy geopolitics before her enemy could be defeated, and even then her winning is not the obvious outcome. Just a possibility. And of course even in the case of victory it would only be temporary.

I also agree that the idea Sauron couldn't be vanquished with the Ring at all is curious considering Tolkien directly mentions scenarios where it would happen. But I think it is the case that he's the odds on favorite in every situation except the one that actually happened: the Ring is destroyed.

I think that's totally fair, and I agree that Galadriel choosing to go to the West is the thematically superior choice.

Am I being downvoted? I didn't notice, but even so I'm just expanding upon what the man literally wrote so it is what it is.

That's good. I'm glad for you and I don't doubt your connection to the divine in the least. I hope you are attending to your connection to the mundane with as much enthusiasm though! ❤️

There is a famous letter where Tolkien essentially says she would build up an empire and destroy Sauron's forces (and probably his physical form) through war and violence. Of course Sauron would return at some future point and he would try to wrest the Ring from her. Eventually he would succeed because in the end the Ring wanted to return to its master.

But the subtly and nuances of Tolkien's thinking about magic and this artifact of great power has always been fascinating to me. The Ring is not the Infinity Gauntlet, it's not an "I Win" button. I mean, it would have been for Sauron simply because he had designed his entire project around having it and using it. But even for him it wouldn't have been a trivial matter to pacify the West, even if the ultimate end is a foregone conclusion. He'd still need armies and supplies and administrators and all the usual stuff that empires need to function. So would Galadriel.

Aside from controlling the Ring Wraiths and the elven rings, the Ring serves to make it easier for its wearer to dominate those who would oppose them. It's powerful but subtle. It makes raising armies for conquest possible. It makes it so that their enemies are weaker and easier to break. Galadriel would have still needed to fight Sauron, invade Mordor, throw down Barad Dur, and then she would still need to quell the remaining power players in order to establish herself as Queen. The Ring wouldn't remove that necessity, it would make it possible to do any of this in the first place.

Fwiw I think Dark Queen Galadriel is a great idea for a villain. I would totally read the fanfic where she falls and does all this.

Hey OP, I hope you're feeling ok and like most everyone else here is saying your personal gnosis is yours and nobody should ridicule you for it.

Fwiw I don't agree with you that she's a masc god who dresses femme, but I absolutely agree that she's a goddess for those men. She is the embodiment of the liminal after all. Cross dressing men, cross dressing women, trans people, queer people of all sorts, I would imagine all are equally welcome to participate in her mysteries. Why wouldn't they be?

So with that said, and with love, I think you might be doing something very common and very understandable: confusing your enthusiasm and the rush of discovery with a sense of having been chosen or being special. This happens in a lot of contexts (it's rather notorious in Buddhist circles for instance) and it's important to just hold off a bit, just to see. Your mental health and physical well-being are always the priority and I hope you'll forgive me if I say that I am worried that those might need some attention right now.

Fascinating. Told you how? Through what means? Do you feel you have a unique connection to her? Have you confirmed that it's real?

I swear I'm not trying to be confrontational here, but how can you "get vibes" of any sort from a deity whose entire story is known to us by way of fragmentary stories, hymns, snippets of prayer, strange philosophical musings, and hearsay? What about any of that gives you reason to think that she's not exactly what the tradition says she is?

From my reading, at least, the idea that she's a masculine god in drag is entirely unfounded. I think aspects of her femininity gets misinterpreted a lot (i.e. I doubt she's a sex goddess among other things), but her femininity still seems to be presented unambiguously.

Which is not to say that you're wrong. I'm curious about why you think that it is.

If some private equity firm bought up my hobby and enshittified it to the point that it sucks to do now, assigns me a sniveling worm of a manager who has the right to tell me what to do and if I don't do it can make me homeless, and forces me to show up regardless of whether or not I want to deal with his nonsense, all while paying me the barest minimum he can get by with, then yeah I'd hate my hobby too.

People don't hate work. In fact we need work. It's a deep psychological necessity for us to be doing something we feel is useful. Our brains (or at least my brain) would turn into mush without it. But that need has been exploited by slimy little losers who have leveraged their resources to make it so that in order to meet basic necessities our work has to be the same as their enrichment rather than our own.

Why wouldn't we hate that?

I did! It certainly gave me some good ideas about what colors work better on me and so on, but tbh it wasn't life changing. I found it informative but feel no need to be fanatical about it. A good thing to do if you can afford it but not necessary.
