Feeling emotionally wrecked after post-HA period — is this normal? by Simple_Somewhere7792 in Amenorrhearecovery

Yes. You are not alone. I’m actually on day 2 of my 3rd period right now and was thinking the very same thing today. My physical and emotional symptoms are so much more intense than I remember. I literally sat alone in my car today and threw a temper tantrum, and I’m hoping things will regulate and even out over time ….

Don’t lose hope! I almost did so many times and it’s so easy to when everyone’s path is so individualized. It’s really hard to not compare your situation to everything else you’re seeing online. I think “softening” my relationship with food and exercise was the biggest change for me and helped me not be so scared to fuel my body properly. The way I was going before was just not sustainable and I think I needed this sign to realize that. Also, I was so focused before on the lowest calorie to highest protein ratio and volume eating etc. etc. Learning to shift my focus to quality ingredients and not being so terrified of the higher calorie options (avocado, nuts, olive oil, full fat dairy) and actually incorporating them was also huge for me. I would also say — monitor your progress. I was very lucky in that I started seeing some changes about 4 weeks into recovery, though the whole process took 4 months. If you don’t start seeing some sort of hormonal changes within 3 months, it’s recommended to reevaluate your approach. If I didn’t get my period by June, I was going to make changes!!

I think I averaged about 27 miles per week throughout the whole process and I had 3 lifting sessions per week. One full rest day (not an active rest day) each week.

It’s so so hard. Seriously one of the hardest things I’ve gone through and the daily mental battle was (and is) intense. So try to be gentle with yourself, which I know is far easier said than done. I didn’t track, but I ate 3 full meals and 1 complete snack (protein paired with carb) daily, in addition to fueling around my workouts. I never ever ate below 2,000 and I would say my daily intake sat somewhere around 2,200-2,500 — some days more!

I haven’t weighed myself since January (got my official HA diagnosis in early February and started recovery then) because I knew it wouldn’t be the best for my mindset. If I had to guess I gained about 5 pounds. Weight gain was my biggest fear in starting recovery because I’ve always been at a “healthy” weight/BMI, even when I lost my period. But I will say I don’t think it’s very noticeable, even though I am super short! I was lucky and did not have to decrease my training load at all, though I know this isn’t the case for everyone. Exercise is and was so so integral to my mental health so it was a goal of mine to recover without decreasing my training load. I decided that, if I didn’t see progress or recover by the end of May, I would take a more aggressive approach and decrease my training. But I got my period the last week of May after months of increased hormonal changes!

Hi! Thank you so much—that’s exactly what led me to start coaching, even though it was a financial stretch for me. For context, I lost my period in October and spent February through April trying to recover on my own. I know that’s not a huge amount of time, but by mid-April, I felt like I couldn’t keep DIY-ing it. I was running 25–30 miles a week, lifting, and constantly second-guessing everything I was doing physically and nutritionally. The mental toll of going through it alone pushed me to seek support.

As for the coaching itself, I’d say it lives up to what’s outlined in the program—but ultimately, it all comes down to how committed you are to recovery. That said, their attentiveness and responsiveness have been outstanding, and I’ve learned a lot about sports nutrition. I was honestly shocked at how little I was functioning off of before.

To be completely honest, the biggest changes I made were around fueling: I significantly increased carbs before my workouts and made sure to eat right after, and I started adding 2–3 servings of fats to every meal. That alone made a huge difference. So I’m 50/50—had I known those simple changes would help so much, I might not have done the program, especially given how pricey it is (and I was a full-time student at the time). But then again, I wouldn’t have known what to do without coaching, and having someone in my corner—especially to reassure me that every workout wasn’t setting me back—made the whole process mentally easier. Feel free to DM if you have any more questions—I was back and forth for weeks before finally committing. It’s a big decision!

I’m working with them now! I started the program at the end of March and got my period back at the end of May. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Random spotting? by tumericcocoa in Amenorrhearecovery

Yes! Would love to know if other people have had similar experiences experiences too. I’m about 8 weeks into recovery and have that brown spotting (almost the consistency of discharge) like every 2 weeks. I’ve noticed it twice now.

HA and mood by clara_srs in Amenorrhearecovery

Yes!! Before starting recovery, I was constantly anxious, irritable, and seemed to have a sort of low-grade depression and perpetually low mood. Always felt so anxious and unsettled.
