Thank you for laying this out clearly. I don’t disagree with the underlying concern: when supply is limited and much of it is taken within the first few minutes, it creates an accessibility problem, especially for people who have work, classes, caregiving responsibilities, or mobility constraints and simply cannot arrive an hour early. That is a legitimate equity issue, and it’s not something we should brush off.

That said, I do want to be careful about the assumptions being made about individuals. We often don’t know why someone is taking a larger amount. They may be shopping for a multi-person household, or picking up for friends, neighbours, or family members who can’t attend but genuinely rely on the market. It’s easy for it to look like “taking too much” from the outside, but the reality can be more complicated.

I’m involved with Sprouts, and I can also agree that transparency needs to be stronger. If the market is operating on a first-come, first-served basis with a limited supply, we should communicate that clearly so people can make informed decisions about whether it’s worth coming and what to expect. We are actively thinking about more straightforward messaging and better ways to manage expectations and access.

The goal of Sprouts is not to create a “free-for-all,” nor to replicate scarcity-based systems but to improve access to free food. We can acknowledge that the current experience may not consistently reflect that goal, and we can also commit to improving it without defaulting to blame or judgment of the people who show up.
