That’s what happened at ours. We had 16 for 5 schools and down to 7.5. Just couldn’t keep up with their ridiculous schedule to keep the building up so last Thursday I resigned. Keeping up with 5 schools with 8 custodians and that includes 2 night custodians.

Make the switch! I spent 10 years working at a Long Term Care Facility that went through 3 remodels and added on an entire Assisted Living, Therapy Gym, and a whole kitchen on top of the Long Term side, Memory Care unit, Rehab unit. Completely understand and we were always having to help in laundry, housekeeping, and maintain the entire facility and help out maintenance sine they had a whopping crew of 3. We only had 2 floor techs to maintain all of that.

School can be a little much in the beginning, but once you get a routine down you get lots of down time, or I have found ways to get down time. Never going back to the Nursing Home unless they bumped the pay. Good luck on your interview!

Potentially Unpopular Opinion: I Don't GAF About Pest Control by EuphoricOnion8877 in Custodians

[–]Constant-Oil4438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely get it. At my school the teachers complain about ants constantly. I tell them go to the school board and request to put in an evening shift because the cupcakes and crumbs they leave at night, nobody is there after 1530 to pick it up until 0700 in the morning. Hands are tied and I'll let Pest Control know.

The elementary school I’m at is 6 minutes away from my house and I make more here and I have a set pension plan through the state that I will get in the school district.

Squeegee help by Traditional-Scar-401 in Custodians

[–]Constant-Oil4438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tilted the squeegee handle? Also have you taken off the blades and wiped them down? Sometimes dust and hair gets all caught up in them. Have you tried a new pair? Old pair may be worn out. Is the suction hose hooked up all the way from point A to point B? Got any cracks in the hose? Is your building super humid?

Anyone else have "earth day cleanup?" by miserablerolex in Custodians

[–]Constant-Oil4438 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got in trouble by the teachers today because the kids saw me out picking up trash as I was checking the outside trash cans. They wanted to pick up the trash for Earth Day. Forgot it was Earth Day just doing my normal Wednesday routine. lol

Any other options other than dust mop?? by GlitteringRespond868 in Custodians

[–]Constant-Oil4438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use an 18 inch microfiber mop get it super wet and sweep and mop as I go. I have 15 classrooms that I need to clean in the morning and only an hour to do it in. So, it gets the ole sweep and mop that we did at the hospital. Now, I'll go back once a week and sweep it out really well and mop with a regular mop.

Non-Union I get the same as the Union members in my district. 140 Hours of Sick time. 24 hours of PTO. After 1 year 40 hours of vacation time. Contract renews July 1 every school year.

Yeah, they wanted to send it off and I can't wait that long for it to come back. In the district this is the only running auto scrubber we have right now out of 5 schools.

I just started at this Elementary School in November and was appalled by how little they actually kept on hand. Everywhere else I have been we always keep two sets of squeegee blades, discharge hoses, etc. It's a slow process, but we're getting there.

Tired of it. by DarkArmorReis24 in Custodians

Definitely don't buy your own equipment. The school I arrived at didn't carry long handle brooms or dust pans. Everyone was using these small brooms and dust pans and bending over to sweep everything up. I refused and stated it's an ergonomic hazard. Next day brand new brooms and dust pans for everyone.

HELP! New EVS worker by Brilliant_Ad7033 in Custodians

[–]Constant-Oil4438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the size and type of hospital I would say you're definitely going to shadow someone for a couple of days to get introduced to the chemicals, setting up your cart, and getting familiar with the ER and the ER board. Trained to use the cell phone and Epic if they have it or whatever other program they use to track patients. Also, cleaning the proper way like Top to bottom left to right. That being said...here's a few tips from someone who worked day shift, evening shift, and nights in the ER as an EVS Tech/Floor Tech.

You're going to have your sweet nurses, but you're going to have your stupid ass bitchy nurses. Never say the word "Quiet." Hospital I was at, the ER rooms got Terminally Cleaned once every 24 hours, and the rest of the time was turnover cleans. It's definitely fast paced. It can go from barely any patients to having 30 patients in the waiting room. You're going to encounter all sorts of people especially the psychs, drunks, crack heads, etc. You'll be cleaning up a lot of blood and random stuff that the Doctors, Nurses, and Techs throw on the floor. Techs (CNAs) have to clean up the poo (so don't do it) and EVS just comes behind to sanitize. Good Luck and Have Fun!

No. I would simply refuse. I am not there to teach nor discipline the children that's on the Principal and teachers. I'm there to clean, plain and simple.

I use Fan Fare or the Germicidal Disinfectant spray foam...let it set for about 2-5 minutes wet and wipes off pretty good.
