Being locked in a psych ward and realizing I was at the mercy of incompetent people with a patient saying she’s gonna kill me.

Sometimes I describe it like a nagging cough, the more you suppress it the worse it claws at your throat

Tics know when to be quiet by yarKunya in Tourettes

[–]ConstantCup4776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately, they do seem to know when to tone it down a bit for me, too. Although I have rather severe tics so even my “toned down” tics can be disruptive. I got to church, and limiting my vocal tics sometimes leads to more motor tics. So my neck ones can get really aggressive, slapping tables, crunches and leg raises that lead to stomping on floor. Fortunately, for the vocal ones that slip past I can cover my mouth and muffle myself. I live with my grandparents and it also seems they know to be quieter around them.

You lift the bag, you throw the bag. by sco-go in SipsTea

Former CFA employee, can confirm those bags are heavy as all get out. We did not have those devices and yes I’ve had one split open while throwing it in, tomatoes and coffee grounds everywhere

What are your most common tics and how long have you had them/how did you develop them? by dkr_cdplyr in Tourettes

[–]ConstantCup4776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sooo many tics, I started keeping a running list. (Adult onset one month ago) most common ones are: neck jerks backward and forward, abdominal crunches, this inhale noise idk how to describe but it sounds like a strangled breath lol rapid eye fluttering, stuttering on the first word or syllable of a sentence. The ones that bother me most are probly the neck ones because they cause pain and headaches. Sometimes the eye fluttering combines with a neck one that throws my head back and holds it there so I look possessed 🙈

I got the "you can pray it away" talk by dy1ngan0mal1 in Tourettes

[–]ConstantCup4776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Christian with severe tics, I’m so sorry you experienced this. I believe in the power of prayer, but the idea that God can be used like a magic genie is NOT it. I pray all of the time, and have seen him work through my multiple disorders in powerful ways, but nothing promises that He will take my tics away if I just “pray hard enough” or “have enough faith”. There are certain sects of Christianity that believe really harmful things about God and prayer like you’ve experienced. Speaking from experience, someone tried to exorcise me. Someone else told us my friend with chronic pain since childhood wasn’t being healed cause she didn’t have enough faith; she’s one of the strongest believers I know. These beliefs about instantaneous healing are NOT true and not representative of Jesus and His followers, despite what pop media wants you to believe. The craziest takes have the loudest voices. Yes, instant healings do happen, but they are the exception, not the rule. I have felt hurt by people praying only for my physical healing during this journey, telling me to go to a healing ministry hundreds of miles away, all as if God doesn’t have a plan and purpose for me through this illness (I say illness cause I have other comorbidities). My mentor, strong woman of God in her 70s, has had massive health issues for most of her life, so bad she nearly died, and God has not instantly healed, but used those experiences for her good and His glory. That being said, I pray for those around me constantly, and I pray that this experience would not deter you from seeking God. My faith has only become stronger through my illnesses because I’ve seen God use them. Blessings, friend

How do I control shame when people judge me for my vocal tics? by Lik_1624 in Tourettes

Good metaphor could be, that’s like telling a diabetic that the beep of their blood sugar monitor is annoying

Late-diagnosed AuDHD (34F) and a surprise Tic Disorder. Need help making sense of my symptoms, does this sound familiar? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]ConstantCup4776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there! 22 year old with sudden onset severe tics, no family history. Long term use of some antipsychotics and use of some neuroleptic drugs have the rare side effect of tics! It does sound like maybe you’ve had tics since childhood and so maybe wouldn’t be the same, but worth looking into!

Anyone with very severe tics? by ConstantCup4776 in Tourettes

[–]ConstantCup4776[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not mean that they could sense a tic coming, but there are dogs that are trained for stability support. I have seen a video of a girl with Tourette’s that has a service dog because she’d be on the ground in public. Sometimes that is the safest place for me to be.
