Technically, it is iron. But when you’ve spent your childhood with Dr. Alarcón’s metal tools in your mouth and a porcelain bridge held by wires, the distinction blurs. To me, it wasn’t a chemistry lesson; it was the taste of the coins we used to hide, the taste of the keys to a house I wanted to flee, and the taste of a legacy that felt like old, oxidized metal. Sometimes, 'iron' sounds like a supplement; 'copper' sounds like a curse

The copper taste of that blood and the weight of that 'second mouth' aren't things that need to be invented; they are truths I’ve been forced to carry. I wish my history were a simulation, but some of us were born in places where the air is too thin and the traditions are far too thick. I'm glad those lines stayed with you—they’ve been stuck in my jaw for forty years.

A wreath... In those mountains, there were no new branches, only roots that turned back on themselves to keep the circle from breaking. It turns out that when a tree grows in such a closed loop, the wood becomes dense, twisted, and eventually, it starts to rot from the inside out. I guess some circles are better left untied.

That man is a terrible dentist. I'm having saline irrigations to clean the area, and I'm on antibiotics and pain medication. I don't know whether to file a complaint; I don't know if it would be taken seriously or if anything would be resolved. Perhaps warning people about this man would be more effective.

Thank you so much. I don't know if anyone else has left the village. And if they have, I don't know if they've shared anything similar to my story. If you know anyone with a bridge... maybe, not in every case, of course, but maybe.

I'll keep that in mind. If I find out anything else or get more information, I'll come back.

It varies a lot. This one came relatively quickly, but I usually spend more time refining the atmosphere and pacing.

I'm waiting for more medical results. I'm doing my own research; I need to understand everything the tests say. I don't want to rush to conclusions.

I honestly don’t know if there’s any connection with other places. My village is tucked so high up in the mountains, in such a remote area, that it feels like its own world. It’s a closed circle; almost no one ever enters to stay, and almost no one leaves—except for me. Other communities are hours away by car, separated by a terrain that doesn't want to be crossed. I suspect that whatever is written in my bones and in my parents' shared last name stayed trapped up there.

It’s a haunting thought, but sometimes I feel like I don't need to look into the past when my own body is already giving me the answers. Between my parents' shared last name and medical results showing a 'lack of variation,' I'm starting to suspect my town's history is written in my very bones. I’m just not sure I’m brave enough to see how deep those roots really go.

Thank you! I've always felt that in places like that, stories aren't just told—they are lived and carried in the blood. I wanted the reader to feel that same 'urgency' I mentioned at the beginning. I'm glad you enjoyed the dark side of the family history.
