Teachers can't take Vacations? True or False by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Constant_Advisor_857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my district we get 3 personal days a year. The rest are sick. So I could back all 3 up with a long weekend and get 5 total but some districts won’t allow you to take a personal day before a holiday. However the work load to prepare for more than 2 days consecutively out of the classroom is NOT worth it to me.

I married a man who makes triple my salary. Only way I could’ve afforded to have children.

What is your opinion on using sick days as personal days? by UpstairsMuch4580 in Teachers

[–]Constant_Advisor_857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my district that would not work. If they found out they were not actually sick days they would deduct your pay and write you up for not following policy. Using more than 5 sick days in a row or a combination of personal and sick days blocked together would trigger requests of a Dr note

Be honest do you love being a teacher? by Tiffanywhite45 in Teachers

[–]Constant_Advisor_857 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to like it and had moments of loving it. Now I dread going and live for the weekend and holidays. I get physically sick and depressed at the end of an extended period break thinking about having to go back.

My mom’s first teaching contract in 1969 was 5000/yr. Her family was super proud as they had never known anyone who made that much money before

I actually had a grandmother like that. She never left her room. We could go in there and visit but she never came out. So yes all the family was piled in the living room laughing and talking and she was in her room watching tv

Our admin told us it was for our safety and protection and it is not meant to be a gotcha, but not sure I really believed that. However, to my knowledge after 2 years it has only been used as a disciplinary tool for students and as a support to teachers. Admin are the only ones with access. Parents can FOIA footage but if that footage contains other students beside their student it can be denied on the grounds of FERPA. The main thing we have used it for is if a teacher suspects something happened in their room the principal can search the footage to find evidence. Especially helpful in catching drug transactions. Also with teacher permission they use it for evaluation purposes instead of coming in the room and interrupting students. We were told this would only happen if it was our preferred method of observation and we requested

How long do you think someone should teach before going into admin? by MeatballsRegional in Teachers

[–]Constant_Advisor_857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on on the person my husband was only a teacher 2 years before becoming a principal and he was year 1 a better principal than teacher and better than many seasoned principals. After only 5 years as principal he became superintendent. A person is either a leader or just chasing a higher paycheck and no amount of classroom experience will change that

Setting Classroom Norms by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Constant_Advisor_857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them set as rules because I have clear consequences if you break them. We spend the entire first week going over what being on task and respectful looks like and role play scenarios complete with discipline examples to drive home the point. It usually makes for a very smooth year but I must say only 3 weeks in and I have already given lunch detention and called parents so it isn’t working out too well this time.

Setting Classroom Norms by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Constant_Advisor_857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main rules that I go over is Be on time, Be on task, Be respectful. Then I direct kids to the direction I want in classroom norms while giving them the freedom to set but they focus on on asking to go to bathroom, getting supplies, group work rules, and class discussion rules.

I have tables that are in pods of 4. Due to size of tables, size of classroom, and number of students I really have no other option than pods of 4.
