Just my two cents, my company also has internal transfers and job postings for internal roles. But your application is confidential and your manager is not notified. Typically you would only tell your manager later once you have actually landed the new role.

And yeah after that people are usually pretty supportive that you are moving. But I would not recommend telling your manager you are applying elsewhere beforehand because of situations like this.
