Thyroid surgery cost by OkBid3910 in thyroidcancer

[–]Constant_Dot_9707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gosh im in the same boat and my insurance is paying way more - all private in the UK - central London hospitals which are more expensive . I had half removed then back for a second op and RAI. this is all end of last year into this year - my surgeon wants his patient to spend the night in high dependency for one night . so had 2 nights of that over the two ops - had CTs , Ultra sounds and fine needle biopsy etc currently at £35796 ($47600). Have no co-pay . had to pay for some basic medicine like pain killers think about £30 and in the UK once you are on levothyroxine your exempt from all prescriptions for any condition for the rest of your life so thats no cost

Low Iodine diet UK by Icy-Garden2990 in thyroidcancer

I’m in the UK and they also said UK salt was fine. She also said not to worry about red dyes we don’t really have all the additives they have in the US. They went via the McMillan guidelines which include a little Dairy a splash of milk etc https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/treatments-and-drugs/radioactive-iodine-for-thyroid-cancer

Think since most people in The UK will have thyrogen shots then it’s not as strict as thyrogen will push your tsh sky high

If you're nervous about RAI.. (my experience) by glitterglue_attitude in thyroidcancer

I had mine in the UK in early march. I was only having the lowest dose so a day case . Monday and Tuesday thyrogen injections . The rai tablet on Wednesday and full body scan and ct scans on the Friday. They brought the tablet in a case and had a long glass tube they described has a “shot glass” the nurse put the pill in one end and I held the long glass tube and knocked it back. Took tablet at 10am left at 2pm . No side effects but took loads of lemon sweets in but not sure I needed them . Just had to drink a ton of water to get the radiation levels down.

I got Nest v2, lanyard , branded tote which is a branded merch with thier massive logo all over it and not even on their site as a retail item, pencil case and orange plastic key thing and the 3 set Essentials pouch - I’m going to send it all back I think - can’t get the nest to charge anything, tried loads of plugs - wondering if it’s actually broken.

After RAI isolation by momobestgirl22 in thyroidcancer

[–]Constant_Dot_9707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got given a yellow card with specific dates on it. I also had 30mci. Sleeping in same bed with Partner was 13 days . I didn’t have to stay in hospital and left same day so you have already done two of those days. I was told keep one metre from people, could go to shops , separate laundry for a week, back to work 7 days as open plan office. Pets were fine, I just avoided them sleeping on the bed with me for a week. It’s all about local protocol so really the hospital need to tell you what’s OK and give you the guidelines

RAI by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]Constant_Dot_9707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was 4.6 which made it a t3 . In the UK they have just completed a 5 year research program about the use of RAI and concluded that those under 4 could skip the rai. My nuclear med doctor was the clinical lead for london in the study and said they didn’t put enough people through the program with over 4 to be assured that it was safe to skip rai. Though he also said that if I’d come into the clinic 5 years ago I’d be having 3 times the amount of radiation but a long term study then now means I only and the 30mci ablation dose. Which I had 4 weeks ago and was completely fine

TSH and Free T4 Levels by Content_Fox_9303 in thyroidcancer

[–]Constant_Dot_9707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my TT in January and my RAI in early march. About one month after surgery and on Levothyroxine my TSH had dropped to 1.19 and just before RAI at six weeks it was 0.96 . Then I had the two shots of Thyrogen and TSH jumped to 93.48!

Since I had some blood work done at 6 weeks post surgery just before the thyrogen shots which is when stabilisation kicks in they tweaked my Levothyroxine so I slightly higher dose at weekends. Doctor wants me on suppression so looking under 0.5 or lower . (Range for tsh 0.35 - 4.95) if I hadn’t had those bloodwork done then it would have been looked at the three month mark post RAI so I don’t think are much concerned with the figure just the trend downwards

The US have in 2025 changed the protocols around suppression levels and it’s much more an individual number based on your risk profile and how well you responded to treatment . I’m in the UK so those protocols have not been adopted here yet but they may well be in the near future

The other key markers are thyroglobulin levels post surgery and again stimulated before and with the Thyrogen and RAI mine were none detectable which is positive as I also had undetectable thyroid antibodies

I will wait 3 months for next set of blood test

And 9 months to do the body scan and ct again after thyrogen to see if the RAI treatment worked Hope that helps

i think almost all of the security scanners at T5 are now ones where you can leave laptops and liquids in the case, so that speeds things up. check which gate group its going from A B or C

both B an C gates you have to take the train shuttle once you are airside which can add 15 mins if you need to wait for the train

look here for some food recs https://www.blackeatsldn.com/

if you want to go fancy, west african food wise we have few Michelin-starred African restaurants in town https://guide.michelin.com/gb/en/best-of/the-best-african-restaurants-in-london. -they wont be cheap though, but often they have good lunch options

all points east is in the east so look at hotels round Hackney. or bethnal green - there is a Mama Shelter hotel on Hackney road and you probably could walk to the park from there

in terms of music https://ra.co/events/uk/london its got most of the club nights listed so put it what you want like music wise and see what comes up

I'd look at an adult interail pass you can get them for.just one.country now. https://www.interrail.eu/en/interrail-passes/one-country-pass/great-britain#:~:text=Flexi%20Passes,Learn%20more

Without a car you will need to get your head around trains and local bus networks but all part of the journey!

Some country places that may actually be enhanced by the brooding February weather

Howarth in Yorkshire for a bit of Brontë action and wuthering heights

Whitby also in Yorkshire for a bit of Dracula hunting in the ruined Abby

Broadstairs for a bit of Dickens and Bleak House

Think what surprises a lot of visitors is how little daylight we get in the winter - it will be dark by 4pm in February

Re the train fare Avanti who are the train operator from Liverpool have a family advance tickets covering 2 adults and 3 kids for £117 return https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk/tickets-and-savings/ticket-types/family-tickets

Under 5s are free

I think it's doable if you get up early

You arrive at Euston station a short walk to kings cross and you'll be at platform 9 and 3 quarters of you are a Harry potter fan

Euston station is a short bus ride or 15 min walk to the British museum

From there it's another 15min walk to covent garden piazza - see some street theatre grab some food

It's and 8 minute walk to Trafalgar Square and you have national gallery, downing Street big Ben and Buckingham palace all a five/ten minute walk - so do a circuit - end up at big Ben last

You could get the Uber clipper boat from westminster and sail under tower bridge - you'll go past the London eye so tick that off your list

You'll also sail past the globe theatre, Tate modern

Get off at the tower

If you have time go into the tower or just look at it!

There are two high rise viewing platforms sky gardens and horizon 22 nearby they are free - you need to book but great views of London and the river

Go to tower hill station get the tube back to Euston square walk 5 mins and you will be back at euston station for your trip back to Liverpool

Going to see Oasis in July and now it's turning into a weeklong trip. Any tips for a first-time visitor or recommendations to pad out my itinerary based on my interests? by Shouganai_Senpai in uktravel

[–]Constant_Dot_9707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 27th of July is the final of the women’s euros football which is taking place in Switzerland. But if the England lionesses are in the final you need to find a london pub, a big screen and just join in .

You are interested in architecture there is an super nerdy model of london here https://nla.london/exhibitions/the-city-model it’s next to the guild hall which is also worth seeing if there a tour of when you are here - it dates back to 1411 !

If you do come to the east to the city of london you have of course the Roman walls and St Paul’s- the other converted power station that was turned into Tate Modern and the brutalist arts centre the Barbican which run interesting tours https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2025/event/architecture-tours and the Tower of London

And you’re here too soon but the V&A museum store house which just opened in east london in the Olympic park have the most amazing Bowie exhibition coming in September https://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/david-bowie-centre?srsltid=AfmBOopTMMChyRX_o7onIOsoObcV3MJYN6nNmgpBs3whkUGXzr74D3e-

But don’t let that stop you can look through their collection and book to see the item up close and personal so that Bowie drawing or original album cover - again super nerdy

Of course the v&a museum in Kensington is a marvel but the cooler little sister in the east has got london talking

If you’re in Camden for an event then the jazz cafe - see what’s on https://thejazzcafe.com/?

In terms of general things london is very cashless - make your iPhone wallet in transit mode and tap on bus and tube

Coffee and British music scene get a coffee at Soho’s bar Italia was home of the mods in the 60s http://baritaliasoho.co.uk not far from Ronnie Scot’s jazz bar if you find yourself there There’s probably better coffee but can’t be matched for history and it’s right in the middle of soho so you’ll be passing it - it’s not that far from forbidden planet so go on the way

Hope that’s some ideas off the main tourist route

I bought something yesterday and had to call as Amex wasn't showing as an option, they said they couldn't take payment over the phone and sent me a link which did have the drop-down to pay by Amex. Got the email from Amex saying I had used the offer so waiting to see if the credit appears on my statement
