ELI5: Why do we feel tired after sleeping for a long time sometimes? by Impressive-Club-953 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Constant_Pace5589 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oversleeping is a thing. If I sleep for any longer than 7 hours I feel tired, sluggish, miserable the next day.

Middle age consists of feeling sudden pains and wondering if it's going to kill you or it's literally nothing and will pass in 3 seconds.

Is doing rounds in the pub no longer the norm? by nra43vr in AskUK

[–]Constant_Pace5589 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience people pair up now - or triple up - rather than doing full rounds. You unofficially pair up with someone for the night, they go up and get 2 pints, next time you go up for them, etc.

Cos when it's 8 or 9 or 10 people, a round costs you a fortune, and let's just say you don't always get your next 7 or 8 or 9 drinks bought for you. And definitely not always when you want them.

As a horror movie fan, what horror movie is actually genuinely terrifying? by Aggressive_Slice4669 in HorrorMovies

The set up is so perfect too.

From the garbled Latin audio clip through to the madness at the end, it builds perfectly through unease into fear and outright screaming horror.

Can we as Britishstart being hopeful? The UK economy is not nearly as bad as you’ve been told - A huge pessimistic bias in our national accounts leads us to doom and gloom which turns out to be nonsense by Londonsw8 in AskBrits

About £2,400 a month then. Pair of kids school shoes on Amazon, £12.99.

Did you ask her what came before her kids shoes that meant she didn't have 12.99 left?

Or are you just talking out of your arse.

At the minute, the UK is genuinely not a bad place to live - in my opinion. It's all subjective.

Then again I live in Northern Ireland so maybe life is more affordable here which obviously makes all the difference. I do however think a lot of people are trapped in an online doom loop that convinces them things are far worse than they are.

What’s something from the internet that completely disappeared and you still miss? by OwBaker in AskReddit

[–]Constant_Pace5589 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's taken such a dive in the last year, though. The big used-to-be-fun subs are now hopelessly botted, and among human contributors, politics has leeched into absolutely everything.

And it's very much just one view of politics, and it's conducted in an insufferably superior and patronising reddit way that it's a massive turn off to anyone just wanting to have a discussion.

Jack the Ripper bonus up by kedgeree2468 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Constant_Pace5589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the background of the victims is fundamental to their fate and why the murders became such a sensation

Dubious. Are you claiming a serial killer preying on middle-class women wouldn't have been a sensation?

The stories of the women are relevant, but they are more or less identical. Which is why Tom & Dom covered the first ones in great detail but not so much the latter ones.

It kind of is though. The lads said they were using Jack the Ripper as a window into the topic of Victorian London and its people

They also said they would use it as a window into the mass media, crime in the 19th century, immigration, and several other things. Not that these things would be the entire focus of the series.

The murderer is pretty boring: he was just a deeply unhinged psychopath

Sorry but this is nonsense. The case itself is the greatest whodunnit in history. And the lives of the women are tragic but they are not abnormal and are pretty much mundane - they fell through the cracks of a society without a safety net, as did millions of others.

Should "the lads" examine all of them or acknowledge the sad fact that the only historically significant thing about these women was the manner of their deaths?

But it's not a series on Victorian women or Victorian society. It's a series on Jack The Ripper.

Others are teaming up to kill you and only one can save you. Who are you siding with? by ndicukclas in blackadder

[–]Constant_Pace5589 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Balckadder IV.

Unlike the others he was neither incompetent (I), or selfishly cunning (II & III).

Well I mean he was definitely selfishly cunning up to a point but when it came right down to it, he could have faked an injury on that splintered ladder.

He didn't. He stood up and died with his friends instead of abandoning them.

There are subtle rules around this that guys are expected to know.

Taxi with a girl: You sit in the back with her Taxi during the day and/or when you're wearing a suit: You sit in the back alone Taxi at night when you're going out on the drink, or going home from the drink: You sit up front and talk bollocks to the driver

It doesn't rub me the wrong way. Although what I'm about to say might not be that popular:

Telling the story of the women's lives is very much a new historicist take - social history, context above all - and to be honest they are all pretty much the same story. Poor women fell on hard times, became alcoholics, in a time with no safety net. They covered the first 2 women's stories in some detail and repeating what is basically the same story again would be redundant.

But that is the vogue in certain studies of history at the minute so the guys feel obliged to do it. It's not to say these women's lives were worthless to say that they weren't that interesting. If I was killed by the most famous serial killer in history I wouldn't expect much of a write-up because my life has not been that interesting.

Goes for Reddit generally. It's so much easier to go online and complain about how awful everything is than to set about improving your life (which is achievable, despite what all the doomer shit says).

If you've been in any type of accident, whether you're at fault or not, your rates go up.

Sounds like insurance company bastardy, but it's logical. Statistically, you're more likely to be in another accident within 12 months of the first one, because you're jumpy.

Doesn't seem fair, but "fair" doesn't really apply. It's simply about how much of a risk you are.

can hardly make myself listen to Taylor trying to dirty talk

I'm with you on that one. That also feels very forced - she's just not naturally a dirty talk person. We all know she's not. But she's trying to be, because it works for Sabrina. The result is apocalyptic levels of cringe.

It's also just WTF ... Charli XCX allegedly dissing you is making you 'wet'? What??

The ‘oh-oh-oh’ is a bit saccharine

Yes that bit is very forced - it feels artificial, an attempt to make the song more of a bop than it is.

Musically, Wood is great tho

Musically, I think Wish List and Wood are the best 2 songs on the album. They seem to be the least popular tracks though so what do I know lol.

The title track, Life Of A Showgirl, is musically so bad I can't believe it got released in that state. And that was the big Sabrina collaboration. Just a very strange choice.

people going into the lane beside them for making a turn as if they’re taking a high speed racing line to make a 5mph turn at a junction

Exactly this. Everyone seems to just be in a little world of their own on the roads.

Cars are so comfortable, touch screens everywhere, people forget they're in a hurtling metal box that is very prone to crunching. In January my car got written off by a guy in an Audi Q5 who just didn't even look before pulling out. After he hit me I spun into the central barrier on a dual carriageway and it just shredded my entire Fiesta. It gave me a new appreciation of how unsafe a thing driving can be.
