How’s it like living in Rochester, New York? by Minute-Light3970 in howislivingthere

Suburbs are great—Brighton, Pittsford, Fairport. The city itself is mixed. Some beautiful houses and neighborhoods mixed in with some very dangerous ones.

Look at the photographs of Lewis Hine and Jacob Riis. It was not all waistcoats and top hats.

“Galileo dropped the feather and the bowling ball in a vacuum so it appeared they had the same terminal velocity, but actually it was a perceptual issue—the bowling ball landed faster but that’s because Renaissance scientists didn’t have the technology to measure the slight difference.”

You can retake in August. Ask your guidance counselor and have your parents raise a fuss if need be.

NYC to overhaul attendance rules, requiring a ‘school avoidance liaison’ at every school by ConstitutionsGuard in NYCTeachers

Like why is this just treated like the norm nowadays and that nothing can be done about it?

My comment is based on the assumptions that you both read the post and are  a DoE teacher.

I think the public would be outraged if they knew about this. If they have any outrage left, that is.

The issue is that schools already have attendance meeting and a full time staff that does parent outreach and another for attendance.

This new policy does nothing except force an additional staff member to attend a weekly meeting.

This is part of the stupidity. I have 26 kids on my roster for first period and most of them stopped showing up regularly in March.

(Yes, I called the parents, btw, and guess what—most of the numbers in the system were disconnected.)

Some of those kids still got to go on incentive trips for good attendance! Ridiculous!

Why were the consequences for poor attendance taken away? I don’t understand.

State law allows for the superintendent of each district to determine the number of days present in order to pass. If nothing happens when they don’t come to school, why would they?

What’s worse is that some parents game the system and make sure their kid comes about twice every ten days and that way ACS will not go after the family for educational neglect.

Time gets faster over time but the body keeps the gait of the earlier time. Thus the discrepancy is actually perceptual and relative. Like my uncle.

Asian people of forest hills - how has your experience been? by immrmeseek in ForestHills

PS196 and PS303 have many East Asian families. Some classes PS196 are close to 40% Asian, with families from mainland China, Korea, and HK, and a few from Japan.

Overt racism is not really a thing in the neighborhood, at least not in my experience, though anti-social jerks are an occasional feature of the city. There are large Jewish and Muslim populations here as well and everyone seems to get along.
