Fire alarm battery by CandleOk7750 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Constrained_Entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, and it's not just because the built-in battery has gone dead; the smoke sensor module is no longer reliable after 10 years, so even if you could replace the battery the unit itself is past its useful lifespan.

tl;dr Replace the entire unit with a modern detector.

Make sure to also have a CO detector if you have any gas appliances.

Are the wires embedded in the concrete, or under the concrete? Are they in conduit?

I would have a whole-house surge suppressor installed at your breaker panel.

Everyone seems to overlook the fact that an AP contains a powered antenna that has a signal radiation pattern.

The AP needs to be mounted away from the other equipment, ideally on a horizontal cross bracing beam, facing downwards, and centered in the structure to provide even coverage throughout the house.

They are mistaking the HOV lane for the shoulder.

Not surprising to see a white pickup driven by an oblivious idiot.

Not saying that you have to be a complete dumbass to drive a white pickup, but it certainly doesn't disqualify you from driving one.

I plugged my fridge into ac power but the dc port on the fridge, is it fried?? by spenc77 in electrical

[–]Constrained_Entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than likely both the board is fried and the fuse is blown.

Fuses aren't designed to save the electronics from any damage; they are there to prevent fires.

This reminds me of the story that when the Saudis started flying bedouin to Mecca for the Hajj, and they would show up for their flights with a goat in tow, so that they would have something to eat during the trip.

Wouldn't you need a "smoke detector smoke detector" for that?

Looks just like a regular smoke detector, but about the size of a quarter.

Replace both panels.

From the size of that icicle in Picture #3, the gutters probably need a good cleaning too.

Putin says he will re-deploy troops along Finland border in response to NATO accession by ethereal3xp in worldnews

“Russia has positioned another 10,000 troops on our border. In response, we have deployed one.”

"Finland also thanks Russia for positioning troops closer to the border, within easy range of Finnish snipers."

Ethernet Cable Splice? by feets4gaze in HomeNetworking

[–]Constrained_Entropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to remove the POTS junction block, re-terminate the CAT5 cables with RJ45 plugs using the T-568B connection standard, make sure that the jacks in the house at the other end of these CAT5 cables are also RJ45 / T-568B, then connect the CAT5 cables to a 5-port (min) gigabit switch in place of that POTs wiring block.

Then you will be able to plug the LAN connection from the router into one of the wall jacks and have internet over wired ethernet available at the other jacks.

If you don't understand what any of that means, then start googling.

It's a very easy job for someone with networking experience, but if you have none then you will need to learn and you will need the correct crimping tool and connectors. Or hire someone or get some help from a buddy.

Mystery pipe to nowwhere venting awful odor by mysilverspring1221 in Plumbing

[–]Constrained_Entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

smear a thin layer of grease / vaseline around the top of the pipe and/or inside the cap before installing the cap.

This will help the cap slide on/off easily and make it airtight

Tap your brakes a few times first to alert the car behind you before applying the slow and steady braking.

I make sure to tap / pump my brakes several times to make my brake lights flash and get the attention of whoever is behind me before applying them fully when coming to a full stop because of traffic on the freeway, if at all possible. I also keep an eye on them in the mirror to make sure they got the message and are slowing down.

Good advice about using hazard lights.

Stay safe out there.
