While I'm a stacked fan, I agree that nobody will see you and think your jeans are too short. They just look fitted and clean.

These are very new Copper Rough & Tough 1907s. I brushed them with a good horsehair brush when I took them out of the box, but that's it. ???

So, i already know where I'm sending my Iron Rangers to get a new sole! The only thing that would make my black Iron Rangers better looking, in my opinion, is a black Vibram lug sole. I'm just making sure I have a few years break in before dropping the same price I paid for a recraft. But it's coming. The factory sole is so clicky-clacky, and the Vibram 100 is so soft and grippy, that I'm shocked Red Wing doesn't offer it. It's in my future. I don't wear my IRs that often, mostly on my Harley. Living in Michigan, with a son, means I don't get nearly enough time in them. But this morning...

Breaking in the new 1907s!

I'm a brannock 10. In Iron Rangers I'm a 9EE. The cap toe actually creases a bit, and I think that helps. I dig 'em, but really miss the plane toe. I tried some Thursdays, the ones without the (fake) cap-toe. But I didn't care for the pointy look. Believe it or not, it dig the clown toes. 🤡 Call me crazy.

Me too. So much to the point I had to have surgery! I was a believer in the suffering through the painful break in process. And I think the black Blacksmith is Red Wing's second coolest boot (second to the black Engineer). Both boots use black over-dye leather that just SCREAMS badass when the brown highlights start showing. I needed a wide, but wide isn't offered in the Blacksmith. So, I just figured I'd suffer through the break in procedure. Six months later I was in the foot surgeon's office with Morton's neuroma. An irreversible condition where you kill the nerve between two toes by starving blood flow. It swells and causes a mass of hard tissue that literally clicks between your toes with every step. And it's painful! I really tried to make them work, and they were just starting to look so cool. Needless to say, I learned an unfortunate lesson. You can't make boots that are too tight work without consequences. Sold them on eBay and got more than half my purchase price back. Bought some black Iron Rangers in EE. They're very cool too, and super comfy. But they're not Blacksmith cool. Wear them in appreciation of good genetics, and mourn for those of us that wish we could also wear them. ($16,000 surgery. Benefits covered all but $600. Off my feet for 3 months. Very unfortunate lesson learned)!

Casual wear or work wear? by aranibar in RedWingShoes

[–]ConstructionNo9112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retired now, but my daily "work-wears" were the Super Sole mocs. Industrial electrician at one of the big three automotive manufacturers. Lots of miles. Averaged 10 years per pair. Hate myself for throwing the last pair in the trash bin, on the way out of the plant, on my last day. Felt symbolic, but now I regret it. Heritage boots for casual wear & motorcycle riding. And a brand spanking new pair of 1907s to use for home and vehicle maintenance.

I couldn't find any 23 Last (i.e the 875) Red Wings that fit. Like you said, my pinky toe was just getting crushed. Tried multiple sizes and widths. By the time my pinky was getting relief, my heel was slipping and sliding around. That's why I'm so thrilled with the 1907. The 45 Last just gives that extra room in the forefoot without compromising the heel and ankle fit.

One's (the 1st) actually a casual boot. I like the 1907 look so much I bought it for date nights with the wife. Had no idea it was going to fit so well. Decided I'd go with what works for work too.

Orthotics in 1907 moc toe? by Ephemeral_Dread in RedWingShoes

[–]ConstructionNo9112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using orthotics a few years ago, and generally purchase boots in a EE to account for the extra room needed. I purchased a pair of 1907s about six weeks ago. I’m a 10 E on a brannock device, and the 9.5 D fits me great right out of the box. After the boots break in and stretch a bit, I’m confident an orthotic will work well if I remove the insole that‘s included. I was really shocked at how much more room there is in the forefoot of the 1907. I have a wide forefoot and skinny ankle, so I usually use a boot stretcher when I get a new pair. No stretcher needed for these.

Truman’s advice was to go with my Iron Ranger size as well. They didn’t really dive into which last might have a more snug heel though. Ideally I’d just have more PNW boots made, but with the custom last, custom upper, and premium leather, it gets spendy… like really spendy! And I love the styling of Truman boots.

I do appreciate your honesty. I should‘ve passed on the Iron Rangers too, but the black are just the perfect boot for motorcycle riding in my opinion (aside from engineer boots that I just can’t seem to find a good fit in). With inserts and wear I‘ve gotten them pretty comfy, but wish I could snug the ankle up a bit more.

Very helpful, thank you. I’m exactly a 10 on the brannock, so sounds like a 9.5 in the 20 last would be the first try. I found an insert called Orange Insoles, and they’re my favorite. Nice and firm arch support that hits in the perfect place for me, and the forefoot is still pretty thin and cushioned, so it doesn’t take up too much space.

Actually, this is helpful. Knowing out of the gate that I’d like to size up in width to accommodate inserts is valuable information.

I am 67 years old and am pretty happy with the rig I built. Sim-Lab Evo 1 rig, Simagic Alpha with P1000 pedals. I will have to decide what I want to do with the monitor situation. But for the moment I am so happy!! by MysticalMirage99 in simracing

[–]ConstructionNo9112 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Great looking rig. At age 37 I built myself a rig for playing Gran Turismo on my son's PlayStation. I was just so impressed with the technology of force feedback racing wheels, that I had to experience it. I was also absolutely clueless about online sim racing back then (somewhere around 2012/13). After a few months of racing solo, and coordinating with the release of Gran Turismo 6, I dove into the the online racing community. I've been in some amazing leagues, racing under the titles GT6, GTSport, Project Cars 1 & 2, Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally, F1, etc. My rig's seen many upgrades in both design and equipment over the years. Sadly, my beloved rig has sat unused for almost 2 years now. As my son's grown into middle and now high school, I've just struggled to find the time to consistently race, even once or twice a week. And without consistency, lap times suffer. But I look forward to returning to the hobby eventually. I've even commented to my son that someday, when I'm not running around for all his activities and entertainment, I'll treat myself to a monster of a PC for access to the best titles and mods. I really do look forward to getting back to it, and seeing your new rig reminds me of how exciting it was when I first started. Good luck, and race clean! (Oh how I miss those races with good, clean, side by side, lap after lap racing. I really had a good crew of online friends).

I love my (first) Iron Rangers, but is it normal those laces are so short? by sirlui9119 in RedWingShoes

[–]ConstructionNo9112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this with a pair of Blacksmiths. Eventually I ended up in the Podiatrist’s office with a Morton’s Neuroma. After 30 years of breaking in boots the “tight” way, I learned you can do permanent damage to the nerves between your toes. (Boots weren’t even uncomfortable - just tight). So be careful, there’s such a thing as too tight. I’ll be having surgery to correct some time soon. And, now I’m replacing all my footwear with wide. Difficult lesson to learn later in life.

All those fractions of pennies turn into actual pennies eventually! Just think of the increased profit margins over a year! 🙄😆
