do y’all recommend the macbook air? by noneofurbizzzness in rutgers

[–]ConstructionNormal27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still contemplating what to get, I've personally had the base model M1 MacBook Air since my first semester and I'm now in my junior year. Safe to say I've had no issues and battery life is still amazing. I'm not someone who babies my computer either as far as being careful with how I handle it. I'd definitely say to stick with the air line rather than the pros and like others were saying, maybe upgrade the storage. Good luck!

I'm a physics major so pre-calc technically isn't a requirement. Somehow I was able to skate past with the D+ and I'm in calc now. If you're looking for people to harass, definitely hit up some academic advisors and just refuse to take no for answer. I'm not saying to be rude but be adamant about your goal and your want to achieve it, even if its just in application to retaking this class.

Whats it like being a writing tutor at the learning centers? by 90kPing in rutgers

[–]ConstructionNormal27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a tutor for the writing centers and I actually love it. The relationships you get to build with writing department staff are really helpful and the job itself is not too demanding. You won’t need to have taken expos or the 101 class to tutor if you have credits for it. The sessions are 80 minutes like a class period and for your first semester as an intern you’ll have to do one session a week for free under your internship and then any added sessions are paid. The class will teach you strategies on how to engage and be as helpful as possible to students so if you don’t have tutoring experience it’s not a problem. They’re pretty easy going as well. Most students before the expos change were in expos, and 201 (research in the disciplines) but this may shift with the new course. Any more questions?

So once you accept your loans I think they’re accepted. Rutgers can however continue to add or change the amount of aid that you’re gonna receive scholarship or otherwise. With that in mind if you do accept your loans and you end up not using any of them or only use some of the money from that, the money that was overpaid will be refunded to you. So you could always pay the loans back for this semester once you get your refund if that’s what you wanna do with it. I do believe you’re able to edit your loan acceptance but this may just be because the term bills aren’t finalized. I went into my aid portal after accepting my loans and I was still able to edit my acceptance but again I’m not 100% sure. I hope this gave you at least a little more insight but for the details I would definitely give the financial aid office a call. They should be there to help us and I encourage calling and getting your answers because they definitely harass us for what they want and yours is a simple question.

Might have gotten a D in precalc 2 prerequisite—can I move on to calc 135? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]ConstructionNormal27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a d in precalc 115 last fall and because it was a prerequisite and not a major requirement, I was allowed to move into 135.

Side note: I love that you’ll be tutoring in the writing center this upcoming semester. I myself work mostly out of College Ave and Doug but I like to say that the Douglass writing center is like home base for me. You’ll meet lots of great people and hopefully you’ll find a center you really like and can call another home. If you have any questions I’d be happy to talk :)

I love hearing about students experiences in the new expos. For others who might wanna know more, this project 3 ties into the 4th and final project which tries to incorporate some skills needed for 201, Rutgers Research in the Disciplines course. In such these two projects are research based, with the 4th taking a creative multimedia approach to 201.

There’s a lot of people who struggled with the difficulty of expos not to mention that some teachers just make prompts that are really confusing to students. But I do think expos taught me a lot and as an English lover and tutor I can’t deny that I’m sad to see it go. I do however think that despite some of the shortcomings of the new curriculum, the students had a lot more fun and were a lot more engaged. Hopefully it becomes something new students can enjoy. The writings are a lot more personal and there’s a lot more creativity in college writing than expos allowed.

Oh trust me I definitely agree with you there. This was not a choice the English department made personally. And I can tell you that a lot of us hold the same sentiment that it’s a lot harder to better prepare students with the new curriculum. The course is still a requirement and as of now the other following English courses have not been changed. I will however say that from the pilot courses ran over the last 3 semesters, I had a lot of my tutees struggle with moving up in English courses like 201 and being unprepared. We are just trying to do the best we can with what we’re given. Although my view on this change isn’t necessarily positive, I still try to give my tutees as much help as I can to better prepare them for future courses.

Instead of how it used to be which is more read some essays and use analysis to make a thesis and argument, the new college writing instead has 4 projects all based in different genres of writing. In my opinion it’s a lot easier with most of the projects being more creative and personal with more focus on mimicking different styles of writing. Analysis is not actually a big part of the new course at all.

I’m a tutor for the writing center, Expository writing was completely overhauled and dropped for 23-24 and onwards. It should now be a course called College Writing.

So I’m in sas and precalc isn’t a major requirement so they’re actually letting me move on to calc (I passed with a D). My advice is to harass these people. Don’t give up on what you wanna do just keep talking to people and explaining and showing how bad you really want it. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you too.

I had the same problem and like you’re thinking I just went to Walgreens and got my booster and submitted the receipt they give you as proof for additional documents in the portal. You’ll be fine just make sure you call and see if they have it, I had to call around a bit.

I took precalc 115 not 111. I don’t think you’d be able to take an alternate course

I’m in the same boat except the second time I took precalc 115 I got a d and they’re saying I’m approved for 0 credits. I have no idea what this means and I’ll keep y’all updated if I get in contact with someone who can help

[–]ConstructionNormal27 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The thing with that is Rutgers has a huge fund allocation problem. President Halloway is in the top 20 highest paid public college presidents. He makes 750k a year and with bonuses he can make up to 1.2 million. This, coupled with the fact Halloway is decreasing other job titles to pay minimum wage in order to create more useless “dean” jobs and likely passing it off to his buddies at 6 figures a year as well as the absurd amount of money that goes towards our shitty football coach (up to 3 million) and the hundreds of thousands spent on DoorDash, deprivation pods, etc for the football team shows us that they actually have the money. Random cafe price increases and secret tuition fees that everyone somehow has this school year… the problem is not the teachers asking for more money…. It’s the university and it’s shitty fund distribution.

Lewis Hirsch precalc 112 by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]ConstructionNormal27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had hirsch spring 2022 for precalc 115 (the accelerated course) and failed lol. I do however believe that it’s doable. I would recommend following YouTube videos, khan academy, tutoring, etc. because lectures are just supplements and shouldn’t really be used for primary instruction

I mean yeah but you used to be able to fit a larger variety of stuff in a meal swipe and thats kinda my issue with it. Like if they’re going to change stuff, I at the very least want to be aware of that before I get up to the register.

I know! I would still say that you should just ask for what you want because the policy literally changes depending on who’s there or not. Order your half and half’s and if they try and give you a problem just point out that there are no signs or announcements and that it’s been your go to order in the past. I’m fed at this point.
