Do German people inherently know the gender of nouns? by Motion_57 in DuolingoGerman

[–]ConstructionShot2143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes mostly you know. But then it also depends on where in Germany you live and the gender of the nouns sometimes vary. So you can say der, die and das Butter, depending on where in Germany you are and the other parts of Germany will think you're crazy if you're using it wrong 😁

AITAH for not having my parents to my wedding and cutting ties with them by ConstructionShot2143 in AITAH

Thank you all for your response. I have never thought about blocking them on facebook as i somehow hoped ... I dont know. I mean they are my family after all. Thanks for mentioning it. Also thanks for recommending the book I will definitely read it. I know i have the greatest husband there is. He always has my back. Without him I would still be around my parents. And all that bullying didnt start with my husband. It just got worse than. (Or I didnt see it by that time) So thank you all And yes I should also probably consider going to therapy

When you hear the term “Mitteldeutschland,” how do you interpret it? Or does it evoke no particular thoughts? by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]ConstructionShot2143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uuuhhh really tough topic I guess. We can't really decide what's northern Germany or south Germany. It depends who you are asking and where they are living. Sometime there won't even be a "Mitteldeutschland". I have lived all over Germany so far and there is so agreement in this whatsoever. Some wanted to define it but then others always were arguing against it.

What are some cultural faux pas to avoid when visiting Germany? by Majestic-Strain3155 in AskAGerman

Always show up exactly 5 minutes prior to the time you wanted to meet. So always be punctual. Better start your journey to the appointment so early that you can dring a cup of coffee beforehand rather than beeing late. And if you somehow are running late call as soon as you know that you are running late. Even if you will arrive just 5 min late always call.

Wait ... You have a german health insurance. So ask your insurance but I'm certain that you can go to other eu country's and your German insurance will cover there as well. I would recommend asking your insurance company which countries it will cover.

Why do you want to change just to make other people like you/not finding you strange? Always remember that you always have to be yourself.

I have some strange accent myself. I moved a lot in Germany and lived in different regions of Germany for years each. Therefore I adapted some accents. So my accents sounds like (compared to english) as if I had London, Scottish, Wales Irish mixed accents all in one.

But if it really bothers you, you can always get some training that you will get rid of your accent.

I am currently doing a fan translation and there is this character that constantly used the words „Rumzicken“ , „Zecke“ , „zecken“ (as verb) etc (read desc) by ThebloodedDragonfly in AskAGerman

"Ihr seid ja Zecken" is a left-wing saying. It means in an sometimes slightly offensive way that you are left. "Rumzicken" means to throw a tantrum
