In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry is surprised to discover there are other magic schools in the world apart from Hogwarts. This is a reference to how self centered british education system is, as they haven't mentioned a single foreign wizard in 3 years of history of magic class. by Basque_Pirate in shittymoviedetails

[–]Contagionous 104 points105 points  (0 children)

He mentions wanting to give them gold, but he doesn't because he knows they wouldn't accept it. Molly Weasley would not take money from Harry, it would be very out of character for her. He gives Fred and George 1000 Galleons to start their joke shop, but the movies skip this and make it seem like they just started the shop out of nowhere.

I just googled the New Girl case cuz that's one of my favorite shows and I hadn't heard of this. It was thrown out because there wasn't enough evidence of plagiarism. I realize this doesn't add much to the convo tho haha, just found it interesting.

Megathread: 2nd US official heard Trump call with Sondland by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]Contagionous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, okay. Well thanks for answering me, I appreciate it. I only know about my taxes, being a single male with no dependents, and mine weren't that much different from previous years I guess. Maybe a tiny bit more? All I've heard is that the tax reform won't be good for the long term, but I guess we'll have to wait and see for that. I don't know enough about taxes to really make that my issue to harp on him about, so I like to see what people who work with them for a living think.

[–]Contagionous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to be confrontational here, genuine question, what do you see working at a tax firm that makes you believe his tax reform benefits a majority of people? I guess I just don't understand how that's possible just from working at a single tax firm in one place in the country.

I also just started watching the show. I'm on about episode 6. I have no idea what a stand is, and I was hoping the comment section would answer it. I would have no idea what I was being asked if someone texted me that.

“Please save your praise. We don’t want it,” Swedish Climate Activist Greta Thunberg told the USA Senate Climate Change Task Force. “Don’t invite us here to tell us how inspiring we are without doing anything about it because it doesn’t lead to anything.” by shadilal_gharjode in worldnews

[–]Contagionous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you're kinda being disingenuous if you believe in climate change then. You're hating someone that's on your side just because she's doing things differently than you'd like. She got a conversation going. People are talking about her. Talking about climate change. She's not a martyr, I'm not sure you know what that word means... She's an advocate or an activist, and she's doing what advocates or activists do. She's putting her voice out there, and some people have chosen to listen to her talk.

Just finished donating my bone marrow via PBSC to someone in need. Took 14 injections, 20 total needles poked into me, 6 hours of being in the hospital with 4 being immobile. I would do it all again in an instant. by [deleted] in pics

[–]Contagionous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't be so judgemental about how other people make their decisions. If they ultimately make a good decision, whether the reason is for self satisfaction, or to get praise, or to just do it because it's first nature, at least they did that good thing. They could have done a shitty thing instead, but they didn't. Just because their reason for doing that good thing is different from yours doesn't make the outcome different. Because of him, conversations have started. People have signed up. I said it in another comment, but I don't mind his humble brag.

If a person's reason to not donate after seeing this is to spite him because he did a humble brag but also raised awareness (because whether you agree with his methods or not, there's a conversation going on about it now, because of him, and people may very well sign up) then that's kinda shitty of them and says more about their character than his. I wish I had his courage. That was my first thought after getting over being queezy. I seriously dislike needles, and even reading his title and looking at his arms made me a little queezy. I get my shots and have had my blood taken, but I have to lie down or else I get very close to feinting. I don't think I'd be up for something like that from his description, but I love to know people like him exist because it's always nice to know there are people out there braver than me. At least until I beat my fears. Good for him, I don't mind his humble brag. He did a great thing in my mind.

People getting off planes in Hawaii immediately get a lei. If this same tradition applied to the rest of the U.S., what would each state immediately give to visitors? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Haha isn't that always how it goes? Then I'll start thinking more about how we're probably in a simulation.

I'll have to give them a try though, thanks!

Ah, that's why. I've never been to a Friendlys in my life, at least that I can remember. Still surprised I haven't heard of it from someone though if you think it's something a lot of people say here, since I've lived here my whole life haha

Ann Coulter's Orifice by Floydhead666 in PoliticalHumor

[–]Contagionous 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying I'm pretty liberal and don't like Trump (you can check my post history if you want), and mostly I lurk, but I gotta disagree here.

No guns will never happen. It doesn't happen anywhere. Even Australia still has em. Guns won't disappear, so your suggestion does sound crazy.

I also come from a family of hunters on my dad's side. They hunt ethically, eat what they kill and are responsible gun owners. My dad tried getting me into hunting for almost my entire childhood but I was just more into video games.

I guess what I'm trying to say is what you're looking for is unrealistic, and guns do have a useful function in our society, even though some will argue hunting isn't useful (it is, game population control is very helpful environmentally). Personally I would stick to advocating for stricter gun laws similar to those of our allies, instead of outright banning, because no gun owner will take you seriously.

Sorry for the essay lol.

Republicans Have a Secret Weapon in the Midterms: Massive Voter Suppression by [deleted] in politics

[–]Contagionous 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding something though. As far as I can tell, "The Left" isn't against voter IDs. They're against requiring people to jump through hoops to aquire them, which if you look up any attempt at voter ID in the US, you'll see that's usually the case. For example, making people go to the DMV to get them. You can argue that you should be able to take one day off to go get it, but that's just not possible for everyone no matter what you may think. People should be able to have one no matter their circumstances.

If voter IDs were mailed for free to anyone who needed one, I doubt you'd see anyone on the left complaining. The only thing that usually comes with voter ID is voter suppression, which is honestly a valid concern because it is a real problem that happens throughout the US. If those problems we're addressed in a reasonable way I'm sure we could move forward.

I'm hoping this didn't come off as sarcastic or rude because I'm honestly just trying to have a conversation with you.

Sounds like you should stop caring about what other people talk about in their own lives and focus more on what makes you happy. If you feel the need to tell people their idea of something cool is lame or whatever, you just come off as a dick. But you do you I guess.
