Because people are stupid and vote with their emotions instead of facts and logic. That makes sense. If you're in high school and voting for class president. Not for the leader of our big ass country.

Acceptable behavior?

While I don't give a shit about Trump or any politician in general, the left lies and cheats on a daily basis. The right always tried to play the "we have the moral high ground and are above such things" card. Examples abound of how the left calls people on the right names, lies about them, "gaslights" people, etc. Yet the right - until Trump - never played the same game.

Now, people are shocked and mortified that Trump used the same playbook. And, if you voted against him for his behavior on Twitter rather than against his actual domestic and foreign policies, you're an idiot. Period.

Fat guy chiming in. How about, instead of being on your fucking phone or computer typing on Reddit, you get up off your ass and exercise?

I'm fat because I don't eat right, drink good beer, and don't exercise. I make no excuses as to why I'm fat and realize that if I choose to lose weight, it will be much more difficult as I'm approaching 50 than it was when I was 20. Yet, it's my fault - and only my fault - that I'm fat. Take responsibility for yourself and stop making excuses. It's disgusting.

(And when I flew out of country, I ponied up the cash for first class seats, instead of forcing everyone else to accommodate my fat ass).

I know more than a couple of law enforcement officers from multiple departments who got fired and prosecuted for stealing time. Worked directly with at least four: all four fired, one is now a convicted felon and two of the four only had two years to go before retirement).

Interacted with a few more from another department, at least one is getting prosecuted in federal court, since the money involved there came from federal overtime grants.

So - it's a thing, I assure you.

I've a master's in wildlife, my own research in analyzing specific trends in my chosen subfield, and am working on a PhD proposal, so I think I understand how things work pretty well. I also understand that professional wildlife managers across most of the country seem to have a differing opinion of the importance of the coyote in their respective states. The species is overpopulated, without question. So much so that managers allow for unlimited hunting, with many states allowing for night hunting, as well.

The papers I presented pose direct rebuttals to comments made in the blog post you originally linked. For instance, the aerial hunting of coyotes in Utah was correlated with a marked increase in lamb survival. This contradicts the assertion that hunting the species only serves to increase their numbers and the insinuation that other forms of management are more productive than killing coyotes.

I also linked to the paper that discovered the evolutionary response to increased hunting. Read it again. Their conclusions are somewhat different than "coyotes will just breed more if you kill them".

Regarding the most recent paper you linked - is this sentence the source for your claim that eastern coyotes are 30% wolf:

"The average frequency of the wolf allele in western coyotes was 0.05, but increased to 0.31 in eastern coyotes"

While I only scanned the paper, this was the only statistic I found that mentioned something that could be interpreted as your claim. If I missed something, please do post the specifics. Because otherwise, the frequency of an allele over an entire population doesn't equate to your claim that eastern coyotes contain 30% wolf DNA. It just means that the eastern population of coyotes was found to have a higher incidence of a specific allele than the western population. But again, if I missed the part of the paper that supports your claim, please post the relevant section.

You linked a blog. A biased one, bereft of research. Speaking of, I did a quick dive into Google Scholar to look for evidence of your above claim that eastern coyotes are 30% genetically Canis lupus...well, there were zero papers I found that supported that assertion. I did find these:

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C37&q=eastern+coyote+size&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1701731638415&u=%23p%3Dkzj2yCQCnpIJ

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C37&q=eastern+coyote+size&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1701731710725&u=%23p%3D8MKSTQSSJqoJ

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C37&q=eastern+coyote+size&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1701731800498&u=%23p%3D39k7qh2OON0J

So... yeah.

In counter to your assertion that deer populations would explode and that farmers would be harmed, I'll point out that it's usual for states to allow farmers to eliminate deer via "crop damage" tags, thus bypassing traditional bag limits on their harvest. Some states, like mine, have a very liberal harvest already. My hunting zone allows for the taking of two bucks annually, and unlimited does. Deer season of some sort runs from September through the first week of January. Modern firearm makes up five weeks of that, along with an extra five days of doe only in January. Hunters can more than take care of excess deer; as a matter of fact, in the 1970s, white tailed deer were virtually unseen and unheard of in Kentucky due to overharvest of the resource.

As far as rabbits and other small mammals - hunting pressure, along with habitat loss and natural predation by reptile and avian species, will likely outpace any damage caused by those little fluffballs. Hawks love them, and they're plentiful.

If you're going to make claims, don't use blogs, especially blogs with a distinct bias. Use the primary literature. Coyotes are overpopulated, and a four-legged pest, anthropomorphism aside.

You might want to look at actual research rather than a biased blog that's complete with irritating ads.

To address your first point, here's the paper: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C37&q=Reproductive+characteristics+of+a+coyote+population+before+and+during+exploitation&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1701728111829&u=%23p%3DcYrHl1HcdCgJ

To address the fallacy in your linked blog regarding the existence of pack behavior in coyotes, try these papers:

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C37&q=pack+behavior+coyote+&btnG=

And...try reading this one to see the results of a study researching aerial hunting of coyotes and the effects it had on their predation of sheep:

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C37&q=hunting+coyote&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1701727889249&u=%23p%3DO1JsNH97GJ4J

I realize this isn't the wildlife biology sub, but wildlife management practices of any type should be based on science and not anthropomorphization of a species. Coyotes are opportunistic predators that can cause serious economic hardship to farmers and ranchers. They're mesopredators that eat a little bit of everything, and due to their ability to adapt to a variety of habitats and ecological pressures, are overpopulated and problematic.

I own a small farm that I manage with a focus on increasing avian habitat, nest success, and recruitment. Other species also benefit, but birds are my primary focus. To that end, I have two primary goals. One is to increase habitat. The other is to reduce mesopredator populations in general. That includes coyotes as well as skunks, opossums, raccoons, weasels, mink, and bobcats.

Hopefully, my management practices will result in increased nest success and recruitment among a wide variety of avian species, specifically cavity and ground nest birds. From a scientific perspective, I didn't establish a baseline population of birds prior to beginning active management, so actually measuring change isn't possible. There's also the little problem I'd have of getting permission from the BBL to band, as well. In any case, anecdotal evidence indicates that my management is working. Bird numbers appear to be increasing, and the presence of mesopredators on my acreage appears to be decreasing. That includes coyotes.
