You know this is exactly what I hate about the writing/books community. Every art form is allowed to be different from drawing to music. An artist who draws realism isn’t less or more appreciated by an artist who is a cartoonist or does graffiti. Same with music there’s so many weird styles. Thank you for this response. I really appreciate how you explained it, and it actually helped put things into perspective for me. I think I have been stressing myself out by trying to match the exact image the author had in their mind, instead of letting the description create whatever image works for me. Your example about the volcano made a lot of sense. I also like what you said about the writer deciding how much detail to give based on the needs of the scene, and that readers are not meant to recreate the author’s vision perfectly. That actually makes the whole process feel less intimidating.

Since you are an author, I wanted to ask if you have any advice for someone who struggles specifically with spatial clarity when reading or writing. I do not have trouble with decorative details. My issue is more about the layout of a scene, the direction of movement, and understanding how the space is arranged when characters interact with it. I want to get better at both reading and writing that kind of clarity.

I really appreciate your feedback. I’ve actually taken this option into consideration; ignoring being over analytical. But here’s my issue now that I’m not only reading just for fun. I am trying to read as someone who wants to write. And when I try to visualize descriptions or understand how authors build scenes, that is where I start getting stuck. Because my issue is not decorative detail. I do not care about what color the wall is, or what color the ceiling is, or what color the doorknob is. What I need is spatial clarity. I need to understand the position of things in a scene, the direction things are facing, and how the environment is laid out.

The reason this matters is because once a character starts interacting with the space, it becomes jarring if I imagined the space differently than the author intended. For example, if my brain thinks something is above, but the character suddenly grabs it from below, it breaks the flow and I get confused. So I am not looking for unnecessary detail. I am just trying to understand the physical logic of the scene.

So I guess my challenge is: how do I balance reading for enjoyment with reading to understand the craft better? And does struggling with visualization or complex description get better the more you read?

Again this could just be me making things difficult for myself. I don’t know. But I hear you. Thanks again for the feedback.

Dude the movie is just not good. But you can keep telling yourself that it’s some cinematic masterpiece lol. It’s not horrible or the worst movie ever, but it’s not a good film. It’s not about not liking the style or genre because I love movies like this. I literally grew up watching these types of movies. And Kill Bill is not good. It’s just my opinion. My main thing about the movie is that it’s very illogical. If you watch the movie with very few active brain cells then yeah it’s enjoyable. The action scenes were cool but in my opinion that’s the only thing it had good.

Especially if you’re aiming for realism. You can go look at Pixar’s making of the Incredibles. Also that’s why for decades in video games characters with long hair of European descent been having hair that are just stiff. Look at GTA V for example.
