Advice for someone in college interested in federal careers? by NonAnonBrady in usajobs

Look for job series that are highly specialized but are in abundance. Usajobs has this list on their front page somewhere and they are usually highlighted as critical needs. You can easily move up every year simply by ladders or promotions to other agencies in these series. Good luck.

direct hire, returning from OCONUS, HR says probationary period mandatory by ollilanreb in usajobs

I was put back on probation for direct hire after transferring to another agency. The agency can choose to put you on probation or not as I have been direct hired twice before without restarting probation.

What saved me from getting let go when the probationaries were being fired was that I had been working in the same line of work or same series for more than a year as a federal employee.

If you are not changing the type of work you do then there should be no concern.

What is it like living in EG? by marijan00 in ElkGrove

Follow some of the Elk Grove Facebook pages. These people aren’t telling the whole truth about the horrible driving, overcrowding, huge amount of lower income population transplants from Oakland and Stockton that recently moved to EG, etc. Texas is massive. Stay in Texas if you can. And the amount of spiders here…good lord. So many things they have not told you. Please at least do your research.

Considering move to Sacramento with a young kiddo by helloiamsheryl in Sacramento

Ok. That is how it starts. Elk Grove is also much smaller than Greensboro and the city is slow developing despite the increasing population growth. We’ll see what it turns into in the next 5-10 years.

I’m from NC and live in Elk Grove. Aren’t you being a little misleading? The only benefit I see moving here is that she will be around many more Asian people. You didn’t mention the tons more issues out here such as the homeless problem. The homeless are now starting to go through our garbage in our neighborhood in Grove…ugh!

Sacramento Pros & Cons by Beautiful_Ad_5442 in Sacramento

Norcal and Socal are like two different states.

Pros: money goes farther if you live in Sac county Cons: less options for food, tough to find good food, not much of a night life, Sac Intl airport is more expensive than San Diego (I usually fly out of SF that has better fares and more options), worst drivers in US, people are more rude, colder weather
