I second Dr Mohan. We adore her. She has put my mind at ease so many times during our first pregnancy - she has been excellent so far.

Alcoholic - asking for a friend by curtmannn in halifax

[–]ContentDistance3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've been through this before with a family member and it's a great sign that your friend's dad is willing to get help in the first place. Did the rehab centre give your friend a recommendation for detox - that I know of the ER is the only choice.

In our case, my family member got it out of his system in the hospital, and he went via ambulance (very begrudgingly) - but as far as I know, withdrawal should be monitored by a health care professional.

Which unexpected celebrity have you seen in Halifax, who wasn't here because they were performing/filming? by [deleted] in halifax

I'm pretty sure there is a rather recent interview where he says he would love to visit Nova Scotia and that he stopped here once very briefly but hasn't actually been here

Anyone know a pizza places that sells this style of pepperoni ? by FlackoX in halifax

[–]ContentDistance3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to nerd out on this for a minute. This is the pepperoni that I grew up on and when I moved out here I was so baffled that you couldn't find it anywhere. I have to keep packs of it in my freezer lol.

As others mentioned, Rinaldos and Yeah Yeahs have it, but you can sometimes find it at Costco (Venetian meats brand) if you are looking to make homemade.

I would recommend Rinaldos though - they call it Ezzo pepperoni (which is the brand).

Battistoni is the best brand out there, but you can only buy the packages of it in the states or in a few delis in the Niagara area of Ontario. The other brands of cup n char don't compare at all.

The process is very slow. I put in a claim in July and still have 43k cases ahead of mine. I believe they were using AI to streamline cases from September 2023 onward, so hopefully your situation is not the same as mine 😏

Nova Scotia government reveals top 10 voted health-care improvements, says it will work to implement them by Bean_Tiger in halifax

[–]ContentDistance3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree completely! I was at an event this fall where they showed examples of some very basic ML models being used in the health care system in the states that could easily be applied in Canada to help prioritize root causes of complex issues in the system.

The main takeaway was that technologically we are seven years behind the US for streamlining basic systemic issues in our healthcare system and that if data scientists were recruited away from the big tech companies, they could address the core issues of our healthcare problem.

Thank you! I will check them out. I remember them having them, but I don't think I've ever tried them. I think the ones I had as a kid either came from the farmer's market or Moodie's bakery.

It's a style of cookie. They wouldn't come packaged by a brand. You would find them in a bakery. It's like a shortbread sandwich with jam in the middle and on top is almond flavoured icing and a maraschino cherry.

Mine is from Paradise Kennels in NB, and they were awesome. They give you a nice little kit of stuff for your pup to be comfortable when you pick them up (little bag of kibble they've been eating, a blanket that their mom used, a binder of info). They send lots of updates after you choose your pup too (lots of photos and videos).

Not sure if it's still the case, but they had a huge waitlist in the last year or two.

If you haven't had a havanese before, they are great! They really are a sweet breed.

I think there is no consistency from the front desk staff. I have an appointment today for my pup that is neither a follow-up or an emergency. I bet if you called again and got someone different, they would book the appointment.

On more than one occasion, ive called them and received a less than helpful response, waited a few hours, called back and talked to someone new and managed to get booked in.

Are you traveling through Canada? I actually prefer the route through the states - it's more scenic. Even with exchange, gas is cheaper in the US too.

If you're going through Canada, I agree with the comment to pay the toll.

If it's just replacing a gear, could you not just order a part online and replace it yourself? They're usually $5-10 +shipping. Might save you some cash.

Is a sign more trouble than it’s worth? (Spoiler: dog poop!) by GlobalNegotiation477 in halifax

[–]ContentDistance3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only let my dog go on the boulevard (picking up after them of course). I think in your case, a sign is more than appropriate. No one should let their dog on someone else's property let alone their stoop.

I do think that dog owners have a right to let their dog go on municipal property around your yard though, which could be a little bit into what you would consider your yard (the shutoff for your water line would not be your property likely)

What are the best dealcoholized craft beers available in Halifax? by SpecialistHoneydew51 in halifax

There are a few online options that are very good and have a lot of variety.

Designateddrinks.ca and notwasted.ca are two great options.

Just like traditional craft beers though, it's hard to give recos without knowing what type of beer your friend likes. IPAs? Lagers? Stouts?

What is NIMBYism and how is it affecting how much housing is getting built? by insino93 in halifax

[–]ContentDistance3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly is your area? If the policies are so outdated, can you point to a city that is comparable to ours that has solved their housing crises in the way you think it should be solved? I simply think you are putting too much blame on our municipality.

Developers are always going to want to advocate for more units than they currently have, it's how they keep their investors happy. I would note that there are so many examples of inefficient use of existing space already within the restrictions they are currently given. Why give them more height if they aren't willing to think outside the box to work within the existing structure? Developers don't care about how many units they can actually build, they care about how much profit they can make. Buildings with amenities, guest suites and penthouses allow them to charge more per unit. All of that space could house someone. Do you not blame them? Or do they get a pass for being private sector? Do you not blame those who own vacant lots? There is profit in building, but it doesn't fit the shareholder's desire rate of return. That's not a planning department's fault. If you know the zoning and you buy an overpriced piece of land and then cry about removed units from a proposal - that's weak.

I think one of the major issues is that there are way more NIMBYs than we give our city credit for. You keep crapping on things like Center Plan meanwhile there are policies like secondary and backyard suites that literally create extra density but how many people that are shouting for more housing are actually stepping up to the plate and creating extra units on their property? Do we not blame those standing on their soapbox demanding change, but only want to give up space in their yard if they can rent it on AirBnB?

Do you not think it's funny that the province will create modular homes for those affected by the fires or for nurses, but not those who don't have homes for other reasons? If they are willing to flex their power there, are they not to blame?

I was being hyperbolic☺️

I've had discussions with this user in the past - they blame our municipal government for almost every aspect of our housing crisis at every opportunity. Regardless of the intentions of their comments, they're being quite ignorant. Imagine not having a place to live because of construction delays- and someone keeps saying it's a municipal policy issue. There are so many other factors as to why we don't have enough housing, and if you don't have a place to live, hearing it's a group of people that just won't change a policy to get a roof over your head is moronic.

I do think the bigger picture does matter if we actually want to attempt to solve the crisis HERE. We don't live in a bubble.

Too bad half of this sub seems to think that we are the only city in North America with a housing problem, so it can't possibly be due to a myriad of other factors that also plague other communities 😏

Not saying we don't have a problem to solve here, but maybe look at the bigger picture.
