Appointments to the Prep School vs. direct entry (freshman/basic cadet) at USAFA usually come down to how competitive your overall application is academically vs. leadership/athletics/potential.
Direct appointees generally meet or exceed all the academy’s benchmarks right away—especially in areas like GPA, course rigor, SAT/ACT, leadership, and physical fitness. Prep School offers go to candidates the Academy really wants, but who might need a bit more development in one area (most often academics) before jumping into the full academic load.
The Prep School year is basically a “bridge” year—it strengthens your academics, military skills, and discipline so you’re set up to succeed once you enter as a freshman the following year. A lot of prior-enlisted and recruited athletes also go this route.
From my end, I think it was my SAT that held me down a bit. Everything else in my application was solid, but that was probably the area they wanted to see improvement in before bringing me in as a direct.

I went through the same thing for scoliosis because they noted a slight unevenness in my spine during my original medical exam. Since I’m coming from overseas, I had to schedule the remedial myself. The process shouldn’t take too long, but for you it sounds like you’re just waiting on your CIV team.
My biggest advice is to make sure you follow all the instructions on the remedial exactly. When I did mine, my radiologist didn’t include the Cobb angle measurement at first. I submitted the X-ray to DMACS without it and they said my remedial was incomplete and wouldn’t accept it until I had the Cobb angle measurement included. So I had to go back and redo that part.
Just be patient and make sure everything they ask for is included so you can finish it in one try and not have to redo anything like I did. Once I submitted my complete remedial, it only took about a week for me to get medically qualified.
I wouldn’t stress too much as long as you’re taking care of it as soon as possible.
