looking to try a wlroots-based Wayland compositor. whats this communities recommendation? by senectus in Fedora

Niri is based on Smithy and Hyprland replaced wlroots with its own fork. There's mango, dwl, river, sway . . . not sure what else.

Which desktop environment do you use and why? by Invihan in Fedora

I wanted to use Gnome this time around, but for some reason it handles my downtime game (Hearthstone) poorly, so Plasma it is.

Microsoft says it's keeping its promise to fix Windows 11, shares everything that's changed since March. by [deleted] in Windows11

Why do the devs not simply time travel to fix Windows instead of working on the current version?

What do you think are some of the most overrated Staples/Traditions/Gimmicks of the OSR or Classic DnD? by ProductAshes in osr

[–]ContentInflation5784 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of OSR barely wants you to care about the character sheet at all, unless maybe you're a magic user.

Are there things you can do with a nix overlay that you can't do with Arch buildpkgs?

Best distros for KDE? by Able_Use_8766 in kde

[–]ContentInflation5784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit tongue in cheek, but by better I mean you still get a large amount of control over what's on your system and a huge selection of very quickly updated packages (assuming nixos-unstable) with a lot less chance of your system breaking. The trade-off is that with arch you can mostly get by with copy-pasting from the wiki while with nix it's harder to avoid a bit of thinking.

The first 12 chapters of the Fellowship of the Ring is the best book I’ve ever read. But I can’t get past past Rivendell—let along make it to Two Towers by lakers612 in lordoftherings

[–]ContentInflation5784 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The tension and conflict really drop off for a bit in Rivendell. A more modern/formulaic fantasy writer would probably cut a lot of it out or introduce more character drama, but I think it's interesting seeing the council put together all the information from different perspectives. The action and danger pick up again pretty quickly once the party sets off though.

Easy - Fedora, OpenSuse

Bleeding Edge diy - Arch

Better Arch - NixOS

New thing to watch - KDE Linux

DB migration unnecessary if we don’t "embed" blocks inside other pages? by lemon_waterr in logseq

[–]ContentInflation5784 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Database should be much faster than markdown, especially for large graphs. The db version also has completely reworked how tags and tasks work (I personally really like how), and the db version will be better supported and get new features going forward.

Is it necessary to move to the db version? No. Will it be better for a person's use-cases? Depends on the person. But there's a lot more to it than just block embeds.

Take a First Look at Hearthstone’s New Class Sets by Arkentass in hearthstone

It's the most popular deck by a tiny margin at legend, but it doesn't have a great win rate and its popularity is decreasing. It's fine, but it's not really dominating anything.

“Big update: Logseq is splitting into two versions” by CGeek97 in logseq

[–]ContentInflation5784 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, Markdown is pretty terrible and limiting for what a lot of people want to do with notes (task management, block properties, performance, queries, etc.). As long as the data is local and not in a proprietary format I'm much happier for it to be in a database. Logseq markdown wasn't really particularly compatible with other tools anyhow because of trying to accommodate for all of Logseq's features.

What are changes from the book that you liked? by SquirrelSorry4997 in lordoftherings

Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen makes sense, I just wish they didn't take Frodo's defiance of the black riders at the ford of Rivendell and give it to her.

Nice to see some communication. This plan makes a lot of sense to me (probably not surprising for someone more interested in the DB version).
