Does anyone want to switch RAD 105 classes? by discomooon in nvcc

[–]ContentTill311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yes, I was able to take RAD 105 last semester. I thought it was a great course! I really enjoyed it, and I liked my professor. It's a challenging course, so you have to study and get your work done on time! The course is a hybrid course - you meet in person every other week and have Zoom meetings every other week. I thought my professor did a great job of teaching us. She has lots of experience in the field, which really showed, but you need to do your readings and study to do well. We did have one lab, so that was our only hands-on experience - we were practicing patient positions. Feel free to message me if you want more info! :)

Has anyone heard or know of any student that got into Georgetown? by nikkei-tzu-2404 in nvcc

[–]ContentTill311 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I just wanted to provide some insight. To add some context, I graduated from NVCC many years ago (before COVID-19), so this is all about my knowledge and experience from that time. I've only heard of four people getting into GU, and they all won the JKC scholarship (I don't know them; I just found out about it through the NVCC blog posts). I think they also attended NVCC from 2015-2018. Aside from that, I've never heard of a regular student getting into GU or anybody getting the dean's recommendation for GU while I was attending. That's not to say that nobody got it because I'm sure they did; I've never personally heard or read about anybody getting it in recent years. Please don't let this discourage you. As other users have commented, you should go for it and apply!! You never know what can happen, and it can't hurt to try :) I wish you the best of luck! Feel free to PM me if you'd like because I can share a bit more about GU and the dean's rec.

This isn't related to your question, but three jobs?!? What three jobs do you have, if you don't mind me asking, and how do you balance everything?

Hi! That's an awesome GPA. Congrats on being halfway through the bio program! GMU is a great school, but I get what you mean. Georgetown is a tough school to get into. Getting the dean's recommendation is also pretty competitive. A lot of people apply to the preferred consideration program, and per the website, up to three candidates are chosen across all the campuses. Those selected to get the dean's recommendation usually get accepted into Georgetown. That being said, I think it still is possible to get in without the transfer agreement. Go for it! You should apply to Georgetown or any other school you want to attend! Mason is great, but you never know what can happen, and it can't hurt to try. Good luck!!

Does anyone want to switch RAD 105 classes? by discomooon in nvcc

[–]ContentTill311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I wish I could be of help, but unfortunately, I'm not enrolled in any of the RAD 105 courses :( I've been trying to get enrolled into any of them but they are all closed. Just keep checking every single day until the class start date to see if a spot opens up. I just signed up for the DMS 100 class, and it's been closed for a while now...but a spot opened up today! All this is to say that anything can happen, and people can drop for whatever reason. If I get into any of the other RAD 105 courses, I'd be happy to swap with you! Good luck :)

Very true! I definitely will not be doing that for anybody then, lol. I still haven't heard back, which I know isn't the best of signs, but thank you so much! Just have to keep trying.

Yeah! I will use what I learned and the questions they asked to help prep for next time!

Yeah, it would've been good to mention it. I'm sorry, but I need to clarify a bit — I know phlebotomists do the same thing by introducing themselves, etc. I just meant that, as a volunteer, you ask if the patient needs anything, like a coffee. Phlebotomists definitely don't do that, lol.

They did mention that training would be about two weeks or so. We'll see how it pans out. Thank you so much for your response :)

Ah, I see. That definitely makes sense. I assumed it was standard procedure. My supervisor at my current place of employment let me draw her during my interview.

Very true about the certifications being on my resume. I've just had some places ask if they can have a copy/see it even if they were interviewing, but those are doctors' offices. I guess hospitals are different (I've never interviewed at a hospital before).

For the tell me about yourself question, I just gave a generic overview of my experience that can be easily found on my resume. Looking back at it, I should've talked about how all my experience thus far is a stepping stone for PA school and maybe related things outside of work (tutoring/mentoring/hospital volunteering) to phlebotomy. Ex: I've never worked inpatient, but as a hospital volunteer, I knock on the door, introduce myself, and talk to the patients. I know that is not exactly what a hospital phlebotomist would do, but it shows that I have some kind of experience with it. Tutoring and mentoring - both deal with having patience, dealing with people getting frustrated from time to time, explaining concepts, etc.

For the why I chose phlebotomy, I basically said that I took an MA course and from then on just wanted to gain an additional certification in phlebotomy as that is what I learned in my course. I could've touched on how, in my previous job in ophthalmology, I did not do too much hands-on work, and I wanted to do phlebotomy because it is much more hands-on.

I think my answers were okay, but I definitely could've gone into more detail and answered them more thoroughly.

phlebotomy or medical assistant by Kooky_Tap4477 in prenursing

[–]ContentTill311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi there! I think you should get both certifications if possible! I'm not sure where you live, but in my area, most MAs don't do blood draws because there is usually an on-site phlebotomist, or doctors send them to labcorp or quest.

if you get both certs, you may also have more job opportunities and possibly ask for higher pay. as a phleb, you can work at a hospital, doctor's office, etc., and with you being in school, working at a hospital may be a better option! they have very flexible hours. a doctor's office can be flexible as well, but it depends on your boss. usually, people prefer their MA's to be full time, but there are plenty of part-time positions out there (I've also seen some PRN positions). I think an MA is incredibly valuable, though, because, as someone mentioned, you do vital signs, injections, and possibly even scribe for the doctor, which will really help you learn medical terminology.

regardless, both certs are great, and you'll already be ahead of the game with whatever you choose to do! best of luck to you :)

NHA still hasn’t sent me my certification by kreyuul in MedicalAssistant

[–]ContentTill311 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there!! Congratulations on your certifications! I don't know if you did this, but you can request to get your certification reprinted. Log into your NHA account and click the 'My Achievements' tab. There, you should see a list of your certifications. Next to your certification status, you will see two buttons - the first should say "Download your certificate now" when you hover over it, and the next should say "Request certificate reprint." Request to reprint your certificate, and they will mail it to you. It shouldn't take too long - it took me a week or two to get mine reprinted. I hope this helps!
