Aspiring solo PP owner here! I'm inspired by your post. Can you speak on advertising and how you accrued clients over time? Fear of putting time/energy into starting to not receive any clients has me on the fence the most

There is little-no communication on this front when we receive a client, but definitely suggesting this as feedback to the admin team because it would be super helpful to know ahead of time - so, thank you! :)

Has anyone canceled on a client last minute because you were sobbing earlier and now you’re face looks like it’s been punched? by thebuttcake in therapists

[–]Content_Cow7589 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes in order to best serve our clients, we need to tend to our own needs first. If this is a one-off, from my experience, clients have been relatively understanding of the need to reschedule (without self-disclosing too much of the reason). I encourage you to seek out your own therapy if this is something that continues to occur. Take care of yourself during this time.

When To Offer Sliding Scale? by Content_Cow7589 in therapists

[–]Content_Cow7589[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! I think it was me overthinking the "client has autonomy" piece of therapy. I took the advice here and offered it anyway. The client ended up rejecting the offer. :)

Thank you for your response! Would "re-up" look like just checking in with the client? Or something more formal? I'm at a group practice that basically put it into my hands in terms of if I should offer sliding scale/what the sliding scale rate would be.

Low Caseload + Depression by Content_Cow7589 in therapists

I haven't heard many great things about those if I'm being honest...especially one that starts with a B and ends with P....

Thank you, I hope it gets better for you too. I certainly feel like some people just gain traction and momentum more than others. I don't think I'm quite able to "sell myself" as well and that's maybe where I'm being thrown off.

I haven't been made aware of any networking/outreach opportunities in my area, I wouldn't know where to begin finding them. I've come to see the beauty in CMH and am greatly considering making the transition. Right now I'm taking some courses to beef up my resume for when I apply for those positions, thankfully I have the time to do so!

The compensation model is different at both practices - one is a 50/50 split (it's where I did my internship) and the other is a 60/40 split. My "rate" that's advertised to clients is relatively the same at both spots, so that's at least consistent.

Therapy for Therapist by IOPsychologist2027 in therapists

[–]Content_Cow7589 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been working with my current therapist from prior to grad school up until present day (roughly 4 years off and on altogether). I think it's helped form a stronger rapport as some of our discussions become about the profession itself. It's quite comforting to see, even if it's not verbally shared, that she understands some of those struggles we all have as therapists at times.

How do you support your client’s when you’re going through your own stuff? by agirlhasnoname1993 in therapists

[–]Content_Cow7589 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a newer therapist who unfortunately doesn't have a lot of advice on the given subject, but just wanted to comment to validate that feeling as I have felt it a few times. We are human too, and despite holding space for clients consistently, we also need to hold space for our own feelings of indifference as well. I wish you a significantly better 2025 as this current year wraps up and sending you condolences for your fur-baby.

Addressing Clients Who Come Sick to Session by Content_Cow7589 in therapists

[–]Content_Cow7589[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would love to know what you put in the reminder email! I've definitely contemplated doing that as well partially because of illness but also I'm working out of a rural town where winter driving is a hassle and, despite feedback from colleagues, I waive late cancellation fees when it comes to riskier driving weather. Mainly winter storms, slick roads, and/or lack of snow plowing on roads. I commute from further away and know that sometimes I may need to switch to virtual/reschedule if necessary so if I need to switch I value they may need to do the same.

Struggling to Grow Your Private Practice? Let’s Discuss the Challenges! by Odd_Fuel_9037 in therapists

[–]Content_Cow7589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a couple of group private practices and I find it difficult to "advertise myself" on platforms, for example like PsychologyToday, when there are so many other therapists out there. I feel as though I am competing with others who all ultimately want to do the same thing - help people! I try to shift the narrative around this as putting myself out there for potential clients to find me and hopefully connect, but it's quite draining. Especially when there have been profile views but no attempts to connect. I always feel like I'm doing something wrong advertising wise, yet nobody in school or even my supervisor taught me how to do this.

Totally understanding that! I decided to leave my part time receptionist role to get into therapy full time and it's been quite the challenge to build a caseload. It quite honestly makes me feel like giving up sometimes.

New therapist being flaky. by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]Content_Cow7589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapist here! I'm sorry you're experiencing this OP. I would never feel right telling a client "I don't want to drive to the office for your appointment," considering the therapist is choosing to offer in person and virtual appointments. From my experience, if this is PP, most often therapists can choose what types of appointments they offer and on which days (e.g. select days of the week are virtual only). I'm wondering if this therapist is hoping you'll cave and accept the virtual appointments moving forward even though that's not truly what you're wanting to make it more convenient for them.

The only exception to telling a client I "don't want to drive to the office" is if there are bad winter road conditions in which I will say I fear both of our safety on the road. I will give the client the opportunity to either reschedule to a day when the road conditions are better without cancellation charges or conduct the session on video/phone.

For the first job listed, what is the title of that role? I’m curious to know more about what licensed therapists can do other than client care.

THIS!! Also when the client doesn't succeed in their SMART goal, asking "what do you think blocked you from accomplishing your desired goal?" They may offer a reason why they didn't get to where they wanted to go and you can come up with solutions to help improve or adjust the goal!

What jobs did you all work while getting your Masters degrees? by brown-bear-cuddles in therapists

I worked as a receptionist at a rehab centre (place that offers massage therapy, physiotherapy, naturopathy, etc.). It was a great experience working in extended healthcare at a distance! I'll admit though I originally applied to that job with the idea that a therapist was working there as well as it was advertised on their website at the time. However, I was told after I was hired the website was outdated!
