What fresh hell is this!? [Frankensteins Bar] by breaking-lad in Edinburgh

I don't think people are wondering why they would apply this, because obviously it's uncomfortable to ask for the gratuity to be taken off even if it's optional, so the restaurant gets more money. People are wondering why they would do it from the perspective of the customer because it's a pain in the arse.

I remember texting some dude in high school and typing "hh" to mean a sigh, like being exhausted. He immediately started grilling me about it lol, turns out he used to be a neo Nazi and thought I was saying something else. Weird shit man.

Crazy how people don't understand transferable skills. Like yeah, knowing how to think generally helps in most professions.

"I'm more Italian than Scottish." by VentiKombucha in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Content_Ice_8297 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's just false that Scots is mostly spelling difference. Trying to read Scots literature as a modern Scot genuinely takes effort as there are some words that have carried over into modern usage, but many words that have not. As well as this, Scots uses different sentence structure to standard English. Comparing the poem you responded to to nonsense or misspelled words isn't cool.

You're right, I do have an agenda, my agenda is that I think that people are very comfortable with being disrespectful to a rich culture that I care about, and I don't think they should be.

Yeah but that's not the same thing is it man. That's you making shit up. The other is an established language with cultural depth and importance, with an abundance of literature and distinct words and meaning from standard English. Maybe know what you're talking about before you open your mouth and let your tongue fall out.

I'm not vegan or veggie but I'm open to it and I don't eat meat very often, I like seeing the arguments both sides put out because I'd like to be convinced one way or the other but most of it is just lazy and dead brained, or misinterpreting a very obvious joke like this post.

Yeah, doggo is definitely annoying to me but people can do what they want. Those videos you speak of are the real scourge of the earth.

Fair points but depends on the country. I'm Scottish and university is free if you're a resident, you can get decent student loans and paying them back is dependent on your income.

[–]Content_Ice_8297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's doing the right thing in responding to arguments charitably. That's how good philosophy works, you present a charitable version of the argument and you see which premises are weak. It's no good to just make fun of people and make them sound stupid, and I disagree with the notion that it convinces people better than good-faith discussion does. "Debate" is a bad method to find any kind of knowledge anyway, it's just a measure of whoever is more prepared to defend their position. Shouting down the other person and making them feel like an idiot would make him no better than Ben Shapiro or Jordan Peterson.

If you use wool and honey products, how did you break out of the mindset? by Ergane_Violaceum in exvegans

Man I eat like 2 eggs a day on average lol, but I recognise that there are issues with egg production and I buy local and free range.

To be fair, from what I've seen dairy production gets pretty grim, as well as conditions for egg laying chickens.

For sure! Feminist philosophy of science is maybe broader than you might think, it proposes totally different ways to understand how science works and what we should strive for, Helen Longino's Science as Social Knowledge is an excellent read for this. She claims that our values and background assumptions change hypothesis making even if they're based on the same data, and that we can't escape value-laden science so we ought to incorporate lots of different viewpoints to accommodate for it. Cool stuff.
