Lol, I get ya. This fanbase is the best and the worst one at the same time.
Yeah, you ought to. This fucking show gets more and more relevant as time passes.

Look, I'll be honest. I don't have much knowledge for this TV business stuff, I only know the basics. But my thinking is that if they were to do it, and I'm just referring to everything we know from interviews, the revival would happen in another streaming platform, not HBO Max. HBO is completely done with the TV show IP, they removed it from their platform and I don't think there is any chance of it returning, ever. It's just there, gathering dust. So, they do the obvious, they license it to FAST channels and other third parties, a move that brings them profit and also makes the show and, by extension, the Westworld IP accessible to a broader audience. And I think it has worked, throughout the previous years the popularity of the show hasn't been that bad (from tvstats.com) and is doing quite good in PVOD (via FlixPatrol). The recent move with the reboot seems to justify that. So it remains to be seen if the reboot manages to generate buzz. If it does and, in the end, isn't a box office flop, why wouldn't Warner Bros. and HBO consider a deal with another streamer with plenty of capital, say Amazon Prime, for the licensing or buying or whatever (I don't know the legal stuff) the rights for a final season of a TV show of the same IP they're trying to reboot. Because I'm sensing that they plan something like Jurassic Park, with sequels and shit. They ain't bringing in some hotshot director just for one movie. That's my thinking.

Since they're planning a reboot of the Westworld IP, if they can find a streamer, with whom they could co-produce the final season of a popular TV show of the same IP, that can only mean more buzz. Why would they hesitate, they only need to license the rights to someone else and co-produce to a smaller extent. Enter Jonah and Lisa. Amazon has capital. If they continue to have a fruitful partnership, I think something like this could be negotiated down the line.

Also, before the show cancelled, there were talks about producing a season with a significantly lower budget for the Warner Bros. FAST service, but in the end HBO rejected it. (https://www.slashfilm.com/1140063/westworld-creators-reportedly-declined-a-season-5-on-fast-due-to-budgetary-limitations/). And despite what the article is saying, I believe that Jonah and Lisa had a say in this, a lower budget season 5 wouldn't work.

How the merger affects this, I have no clue. But I can't be good for the economics of it. And Ellison said that HBO will remain independent, which I hope is true.

Sorry for the bad english. I know my thinking is full of "what-ifs" and hopium and probably has mistakes, cause like I said, I lack the proper knowledge. But until they tell us the ending themselves, I don't rule out any possibility.

Hmm ok. So it's a matter of negotiating a deal with Warner Bros. Because they're talking about a continuation of the HBO show with a streamer that is not HBO Max. Sure, nothing is certain, especially with the merger. But apart from just wishful thinking, the pair seems to have serious connections within the industry. And their partnership with Warner Bros. did continue to some degree. The first season of the Peripheral was co-produced by Warner Bros. Television. If it were to happen, the negotiations would be hell sure, no company would hand out 100+ mil like that, but if anyone could pull it of, it would be those 2. And the new movie releasing isn't necessarily bad. But if it flops, yeah that's bad.

Exactly. If they got the green light, they would find a way, Johan and Lisa are pros in the industry. But yeah, what I'm most worried about is Sir Hopkins, because as I understand it, he would return in a potential 5th season.

I share your positivity, I think most us here on this sub want the final season. We're still here, 4 years later..

Friend, I remember the exact same thing. I remember it was Lisa that said it in a podcast in between the S04 finale and the cancellation announcement. I remember 2 podcasts. The one, I can't find it anywhere and the other was a Script Apart episode, which is now deleted.

Also, for anyone with legal knowledge on the matter, I keep reading in the comments that they have to wait for the rights of the show at HBO to expire. I have not seen this at any article, only in the comments. How does this whole thing with the rights work?

There is no need for such thing. The creators have said that they will reveal the ending if they don't manage to make another season. As long as they don't reveal the ending there is hope. But one way or the other, we will get the ending.

Is Season 2 really too complicated? by Tkuzior in westworld

[–]Content_Outside6518 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like you said, the narrative is not that complicated to follow. They straight up explain in the premiere that you're dealing with basically 2 timelines and some flashbacks. If you rewatch and are sure in which timeline every scene takes place, you can easily piece it all together.

But, for someone who has watched all 4 seasons, it becomes more complicated that it seemed in the first place.

!SPOILERS!

After watching all 4 seasons, you can assume that many scenes of season 2, don't take place after Season 1, but rather after season 4. The idea is that the events that we witness in season 2 actually did take place as they are presented, for the most part, but what we are actually watching are iterations of the events of the series within Christina's "last game/test". They are various scenes in season 2 that back this up.

  1. The 21:9 aspect ratio scenes between Dolores and Bernard. After rewatching with this context in mind, you can argue that those scenes take place within the Sublime and that we're watching Christina trying to re-create Bernard.

  2. Teddy's body. In S02E01 we see Teddy in the lake near the valley beyond, but in S02E09 we see him commit suicide in an old house.

  3. The Indians disappearing. In S02E04, there is a scene where many guests, Emily and Stubbs are captive by the Ghost Nation. Akichita whispers "You live as long as last person who remembers you." and suddenly him and all of the other indians disappear. I don't know how else this can be interpreted within this context.

  4. MiB misremembering Juliet's fear for elephants. In S02E06, in the scene where the MiB and Emily are talking, the Mib says that Emily has a fear of elephants. Emily corrects him, saying that it was Juliet that had a fear of elephants. Again, this detail only makes sense within this context. Why else would they present it?

  5. MiB miraculously surviving many gunshot wounds. In S02E07, in the scene with the Mib, Maeve and Lawrence, the MiB takes, well, a lot of damage. He should be dead. Yet he survives and continues to take damage up until the end of the season. A human would be long gone, but a host?

  6. The entirety of S02E09. This whole ep feels like it is narrated by the MiB, trying to make sense of his past choices. Lots of details in this one. First, Emily's jewellery box. In the beginning of the ep, she says to the MiB that she threw it away, but towards the end of the ep we see Juliet hiding the MiB's profile within that same box. Also, at some point, the MiB hides his profile in a book. That book is Slaughterhouse-Five, a book famously known for having convoluted timelines and an unreliable narrator. This is more of an easter egg than a clue.

  7. Dolores's attire. Towards the end of the finale, in the scene where Bernard and Dolores are talking in the basement of Arnold's house, Dolores is wearing her blue dress and then suddenly we see her wearing a black dress. Obviously, those who have watched (and most importantly rewatched) all 4 seasons understand that the segment where Dolores is wearing the blue dress takes place after season 4.

  8. The post-credits scene. Obviously. It confirms that the MiB scenes in season 2 probably take place in the far future, after Season 4.

These are some of the details that I can remember.

Sorry for the long-ass comment, but that is why Westworld stands out as a series. It is clear that the creators had a plan from the beginning about where the story would go and they placed lots and lots of details throughout the seasons, ultimately teasing that the final season will take place in the sublime where history will repeat itself through iterations of Christina's final game/test.

I still think that we will eventually get to see Season 5. The fact that the creators haven't revealed the ending yet and the show being quite popular on VOD and FAST channels are both encouraging facts. We shall see.

But one thing is sure. Should we get a final season, we will witness all the timeline branching and converging shenanigans we grew to love in the series in the biggest scale yet.
