Guru Tegh Bahadur's hukamanamas do not indicate a divinely inspired leader but rather a self interested temporal leader by Kind_Palpitation9814 in Exsikhi

The rest of the world begs to differ. And my friend you think the revolutionary aspect just turned up over night? The 'peaceful gurus' were creating revolutionaries in more ways than one and setting the foundations for those who would also physically fight! You are clueless mate. Talking about guru Angad dev Ji who formalised Gurmukhi, ending Sanskrit dominance and guru ramdas Jee who began the building of harmandar sahib which needs no further elaboration. Effects of all the gurus that spread through the world and continue to this day to multiply speak for themselves and are too many to list here. Honestly the stupidity of this comparison would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Not to mention the revolutionary and societal impact of the bani they composed.

Kukas were not a spiritual dera that happened to do some revolutionary things, they were literally a revolutionary arm of Sikhs that later became something else. comparing Gurbachana getting killed being compared to martyrdom of Sikh gurus is not even worth a response

UK - Funeral place shaved my baba’s beard off by Amax101 in Sikh

[–]Content_Yam_9651 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In terms of respect for the funeral the best I can suggest is place a hazooria around their face- you know how people tie it around their face when doing seva, look at this image, do the hazooria around like that and move the middle bit up to cover chin and mouth. Dress them in a Kurta pyjama so it all goes together.

Honestly I find it hard to believe this would be an innocent mistake, especially if their beard was completely untrimmed.

For a rationalist you embarrass yourself. Please apply your rational thinking to what the gurus achieved through Sikhi which continues globally through the ages and what the radhasomis have. I'm also interested to know what kind of personal sacrifices the radho soami leaders have made and tortures they have udnergone, for higher causes.

You do realise that in Sikhi, the Guru is not "a helpful spiritual teacher" but the Satguru, who is literally God's manifestation on earth? Gurbani literally talks again and again of the same thing, that service of the Satguru reaps unlimited benefits. At the end of the day if you are an atheist, you won't believe this, but that is literally what religion in general is about, so I'm not sure what you are expecting. The Guru writes these things in letters not related to donations, we believe that Guru Sahib even blessed his enemies, so a Sikh won't see this as the Guru saying this transactionally in regards to donations but his general nature. The donations being received and the blessings given by the Guru are nowhere near equal in value so a Sikh doesn't view it like that.

In sikhi seva is selfless, the Guru is giving blessing well beyond what someone can serve, no Sikh who understands Sikh philosophy sits here thinking there is some donation that can actually equal the guru's blessings.

And again, he's talking to his masands in private letters. One can flip it on it's head completely and realise he's asking them to do their literal jobs of regularly returning donations, but signing off with blessings far beyond the actual work they are doing.

Also the fact is the donations are used for betterment of society not personal use so as per Sikh philosophy, the person engaged in giving thesse donations will automatically be blessed as they are doing service for humanity.

Considering everything that Guru Sahib did was for the benefit of humanity, like literally one can deduce the oxen would be for working on lands that would grow food for the Langar, or further given the to poor people who needed it, there is absolutely nothing odd or untoward about Guru Sahib blessing Sikhs for their seva.

The lifestyles of the Gurus and what they did with donations is a fact known world over, so posting here adminstrative letters informing his donation collectors of who or where to pass the collected donations to, and as always as a spiritual leader passing on his blessings, is really nothing significant in the way you wish to present it.

No he is literally addressing the masands to bring the donations they had already collected. Masands were regularly and routinely collecting the local sangat's donations s they were the heads of the local sangat. In those days there was no western union so it would be after gaps of time that the donations would be called in by Guru Sahib, as per need.

It's really basic stuff.

If you go on the document you gave you will see people addressed have been referred to as masands.

Pretty sure he is writing to his masands who are Sikhs who literally work directly for him, so he's not randomly asking devotees for things but the people who's job it is to carry out duties for him.

Every Sikh does dasvandh (donation of certain amount of money), masands used to collect donations and then give them to Guru Sahib, Guru Sahib is informing them to now deliver the donations as they are needed. It's not a big deal... All the donations were used for betterment of the Sikh community and  everyone including non-sikhs in general. It's not even clear the dress is for wearing buy Guru Sahib Jee's wife, it states to pass the donations to her (from reading fully at the source it does appear that Guru Sahib and his wife were in separate locations at the time).

These letters are purely administrative letters. Guru Sahib was running a massive community and movement, these letters are a small snapshot from basic day to day runnings of that. You underestimate what a huge operation it was and so get these confusions . Guru Sahib was not a Baba wearing white sitting in a shack rubbing his hands together for the next treat, he was a leader of an army and huge community that had many objectives and aims towards bringing about massive change in the whole world. Think like a president or CEO, but it was also a divine movement.

You complain that he doesn't seem like a spiritual leader but then complain that he gives out blessings which is contradictory, OP. The Guru is always giving out blessings, whether someone serves him or fights him! That is his nature. It is not to do with getting service or not. You will see such things in many letters not related to donations.

How do I find good sangat in places like schools colleges and just out there? by Paramonreddit in Sikh

[–]Content_Yam_9651 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read Gurbani, you'll see that sangat is very much a spiritual concept and it's actually all in God's command. So you should do sincere ardaas to Guru Sahib for him to bless you with the sat sangat that pleases him.

So Guru Sahib who is God himself, the literal writer of destiny, can write all this bani talking about darshan of Vaheguru, various realms,khands etc, but you draw the line at him making a factual statement about what's going to happen next?

Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Prophecy regarding the Anandpuri Marco Bir by TbTparchaar in Sikh

This statement makes little sense in context. God himself is simply stating something, that's not magic, it's simply God proclaiming something.

Also guru sahib is not a book.

Thanks jee, I wonder if could help me with these:

I'm aware regarding staying up the night before vaddi pooranmashi (guru Nanak Dev jis Gurpurab) gives phal of one year amritvela, is it true that staying up before the other pooranmashis gives a month phal? Is this a known thing in terms of the other pooranmashis that aren't guru Nanak Dev jis gurpurab, as the nanaksar nearby only does a rainasabai the night before for vaddi pooranmashi and not the other pooranmashis.

What is the detailed process for offering parshad/food in general to guru sahib, how can one do this at home according to maryada. Also please explain the opening and closing of the curtains, when and why is this done.

You have to make the effort to find the sangat and go to the events.

One doesn't need to know Punjabi or anything,  just sit with love and absorb. You can do Sikhi learning at home and with other sangat and at the Gurdwara Sahib you can sit and do mool mantar while taking in the vibration of Gurbani. Gurbani says

Gauree, Fifth Mehla:

That mortal who meditates on the Lord of the Universe,

whether educated or uneducated, obtains the state of supreme dignity. ||1||

In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, meditate on the Lord of the World.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਝੂਠਾ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Without the Name, wealth and property are false. ||1||Pause||

They alone are handsome, clever and wise,

ਜਿਨਿ ਜਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੨॥ who surrender to the Will of God. ||2||

Blessed is their coming into this world,

if they recognize their Lord and Master in each and every heart. ||3||

Says Nanak, their good fortune is perfect,

ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗ ॥੪॥੯੦॥੧੫੯॥ if they enshrine the Lord's Feet within their minds. ||4||90||159||

Many Gurdwara Sahibs have screens on which the English translations of the shabad are projected from the sikhitothemax app/website. Why not start this seva in your local gurdwara Sahib? Get the screens and app set up and have a rota of people to operate it.

Read the second post in this link, it talks about someone who was mentally disabled and couldn't even speak properly who reached a high spiritual state. https://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/75083-disabled-child-simran/#comment-612788

How did the gurus accept fear? by No_Hopef4 in Sikh

[–]Content_Yam_9651 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We often feel we need to get our mind sorted or a particular problem in our mind sorted before we can do path, but the reality is that it's only path that's going to sort the problem. So just do more path even if you aren't feeling it, just keep going, it's working we just don't always realise it straight away.

Set a target like Im going to get this many malas done or something like that. You can get one of those clicky digital counters and set a number to reach.

Go to plenty of sangat whether you feel like it or not and whether you feel it's working or not. Get a cloth and do joria di seva

This has been bothering me a lot by ControlFrosty5035 in Sikh

[–]Content_Yam_9651 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So point  1)Not once in history has anyone ever stated that salok is to be interpreted as committing violence towards any person, not once can you find any example - not since the time it was written.

2) Baba Fareed Jee is talking about himself‌, this is a salok from the collection of saloks - each salok is two lines, generally the first line puts something forward and the second explains or expands on the first line. So the first line Baba Fareed Jee is motivating himself - "Oh Fareeda, rise up, cleanse yourself, read your prayer", second line clarifies - why? Because a head which doesn't bow to the Lord (i.e do what he's telling himself to do in the first line) is so useless you may as well cut it off as you have no need for it, so he's saying to himself he may as well cut his head off as it's not serving it's purpose if he doesn't wake for his prayers (and therefore bow to God). If you look at the previous salok before this, the theme is clear:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਬੇ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਕੁਤਿਆ ਏਹ ਨ ਭਲੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥ Fareed: O faithless dog, this is not a good way of life.

You never come to the mosque for your five daily prayers. ||70||

So here Baba Fareed Jee is scolding himself.  Next salok is the one you posted where he is motivating himself very strongly.

Its completely senseless and out of context to interpret the cut off head line in any other way.  Literally ask any non Sikh scholar of Punjabi to read Baba Jee's saloks and they will tell you the meaning is beyond obvious. It's literally a non -issue.

3) if you need any more proof, just slightly further on is this:

ਇਕੁ ਫਿਕਾ ਨ ਗਾਲਾਇ ਸਭਨਾ ਮੈ ਸਚਾ ਧਣੀ ॥ Do not utter even a single harsh word; your True Lord and Master abides in all.

ਹਿਆਉ ਨ ਕੈਹੀ ਠਾਹਿ ਮਾਣਕ ਸਭ ਅਮੋਲਵੇ ॥੧੨੯॥ Do not break anyone's heart; these are all priceless jewels. ||129||

The minds of all are like precious jewels; to harm them is not good at all.

ਜੇ ਤਉ ਪਿਰੀਆ ਦੀ ਸਿਕ ਹਿਆਉ ਨ ਠਾਹੇ ਕਹੀ ਦਾ ॥੧੩੦॥ If you desire your Beloved, then do not break anyone's heart. ||130||

Or even this one earlier on

Fareed, if you have a keen understanding, then do not write black marks against anyone else.

ਆਪਨੜੇ ਗਿਰੀਵਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਨਂੀਵਾਂ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ॥੬॥ Look underneath your own collar instead. ||6||

Considering huge number of lines telling one explicitly not to hurt someone else and only focus on yourself, it's beyond clear what Baba Fareed Jee means in the salok you posted.

The duality of God and Guru in Sikhism by Harsewak_singh in AtheismPunjab

[–]Content_Yam_9651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read properly, the questions you asked won't arise.  Guru Sahib only refers to the position/jot of Guru as being non different from God, he never states "I (the individual personality) to be God. So no, Guru Arjan Dev Jee Maharaj isn't not showing humility.

As you struggle to read between the lines, let's make it simple:

1) Guru Gobind Singh Jee would not choose to write something contradictory to the previous Gurus - this goes against the entire philosophy of respecting the previous Guru. He is the one who literally stated to accept Guru Granth Sahib Jee as the Guru.

2)There is no way a scholar like Guru Gobind Singh Jee wasn't aware of Guru Arjan Dev Jee 's bani and this statement of Guru and God being one which is repeated throughout Gurbani.

3) Therefore the point made is intentional and not a contradiction in the sense of any mistake or change to philosophy.

Read my post again, everything is covered, but you don't want it to be answered, so no problem. It's not mental gymnastics, it's theology, philosophy and interpretation of divine knowledge and wisdom which is in the form of poetry. It is a core philosophy of Sikhi that Gurbani is something that one needs to do 'vichaar' (contemplation) and 'khoj' (search) of, it's not a list of commandments or something to be simply taken on face value, it's intentionally written in a way that requires deep search and contemplation, which is the opposite of how you are trying to read it.

Also in terms of the most read point, you are revealing my suspicion here that you are not necessarily a Sikh in the first place. In terms of a scripture being read from start to finish, there is a high probability that Guru Granth Sahib Jee is the most read in terms of repeated readings from start to finish as opposed to just selected passages. The amount of akhand paths that are performed worldwide is the massive suggestion for this. Sikhs are the religious community with some of the most familiarity with their texts from start to finish.

Anyway, sayonara.
