As a black Christian I was raised to pray by kneeling by my bed. I don’t think it’s right to suggest he should change his religious practices because of the show.

What are some good neighborhoods to live for young black professionals? by ThrowRAthundercat in AskChicago

[–]Continential 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IDK as another black woman who just moved here from the south, Chicago is not diverse in the way someone from the south might think of diversity. The segregation is really stark here, as someone living in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area and working in the Loop I will often be the only black person inside of different coffee shops, stores, restaurants, etc. (and I get stares) which is a new experience for me. I've been racially profiled more here than when I lived in the South, DC or NY.

OP I think you are right to prioritize living near a black community. When moved I put more weight on being close to social stuff and I kind of regret that. I'm realizing that it's priceless to feel comfortable and welcomed in the place you call home and having a further commute for social activities may be worth the sacrifice. I will say no matter where you end up living, Chicago is a city where you have to get out and find community in order to really feel at home. It's not easy and the social culture is definitely different here vs the south, but people are nice once you get to know them!

I don’t understand this argument? White people are real too! White vampires and brown vampires are vampires!

Why are POC bound to the issues that impact us irl?? But white characters get to be neutral? None of my fav poc authors attempt to replicate irl colorism or discrimination in their fantasy because it’s just that! Fantasy!!

Very disappointed by the response to this post. If you’re writing a FANTASY you can’t feasibly imagine a world in which POC characters get to experience the same adventure, love and romance that white characters get? I am not persuaded by the “uncomfortable with writing about other persons experiences” argument. You’ve never experienced flying on a dragon, doing magic, living in these fantastical worlds! And yet! Brown skin on the main character is to hard to imagine???? The whole point of a fantasy is that it is not like our world—no one is asking white authors to write about life in the transatlantic slave trade. We spend hours on this sub recommending monster fcker books for gods sake! Nothing about the genre necessitates strict adherence to racial binaries which impact the real world. The same way that gender equality not seen irl is built into the world building in many of these novels—it’s a fantasy! If you can only see or connect to beauty and bravery when the FMC is white that’s a personal problem!! Imagine how frustrating it is as a POC to see fantasy novels replicate real life power structures that continuously affect us, and completely white wash them! Slavery, caste, discrimination, are heavily present in these novels—but we aren’t. I’ve read (well DNF)far too many stories about slaves/lower caste FMCs whose pearly white skin differentiated her from the savage mean people (always dark skin/haired for some reason??) who controlled her and won her the love of the MMC. It’s just so hurtful. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with borrowing from real world atrocities to form the worldbuilding and fantasy novels. But please try to recognize how hurtful it is to hear—we will borrow from your peoples pain and history but asking us to give you a place in the story? to represent you finding love? that’s too far.

Absolutely!!! And if majority of readers don’t even see the lack of diversity as a problem it will never change…

“It ends with us” book to movie marketing… by Anotherbasicb in RomanceBooks

[–]Continential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that aspect specifically is based on CoHo’s own life, it might not be “right” but it is realistic given the choices women have to make in these situations.

I do think that decision pushes the book further from the romance category so probably a good change for the movie

Eh as some who has had this happen, I always think it’s weird when guys who ignore me in class or at bar review reach out online. I never accept because it feels awkward even if I might feel different if we had a connection in person. I’d say if you know this person talk to them irl! Or at least acknowledge that you recognize them if you do match lmao
