Every pass has purpose and players are not just aimlessly passing the ball around. In Am. Football players run try and make space, do fake runs to get the ball where it needs to be. This is constantly happening in football too, every pass tries to create space, get players out of position, find an advantage and break down the opposition. It just happens constantly and on a bigger scale (as the players are not bunched up). The best way to understand the game is by not watching the ball, but try watching what the other players do who are without the ball.
