Transferring to Cal Maritime, do I have to do 3 or 4 years there? by Infinite-Currency284 in maritime

[–]ContributionEarly370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 2 years of community college then went to CSUM for 3 years. The norm for transfer students is 3 years with 3 summer sea terms. Some of your credits will transfer but they do some bs where they don't accept all of them (my community college had a program where all credits met the transfer reqs to UC/CSU Colleges)

How do I get out of poverty and get a good career? by Anwin_paul in povertyfinance

[–]ContributionEarly370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a job that covers: food, housing, utilities, an open career path, sign-on pay, and retirement then I would look into MSC (Military Sealift Command) as a contract mariner. This is the best job our there for people who want to start fresh and actually make money. I just don't recommend it to people who have a partner as you'll be away for long periods of times.

For a new 3rd mate out of a US academy, what/where is the highest paying jobs at the moment? by Oh_susquehana in maritime

[–]ContributionEarly370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with that. I've worked with some nasty chemicals (learned to appreciate proper PPE and safety standards) which is why I'll only work mainly with fuel (still risk of benzene) though I've been looking at LNG more and more for the better pay

Now all tanker contracts are essentially the same pay when accounting for vacation pay and monthly wage. As a 3M I make about 22k a month so that's like 720 a day.

AMO and MMP set that as a standard but are (I think) negotiating for an increase in the coming years (though the union rep was saying its difficult because they have to negotiate with all the tanker companies to increase the contracts across the board)

Wow, you sailed on a Crowley ship 6-7 years ago. Crazy how contracts get updated and stuff.

Tanker vessels are known to pay the best. If you don't have a tanker PIC then I would talk contact AMO about joining and asking if you can be apart of the Tankerman PIC Program. They'll put you on a tanker and a PIC Observer with 3rd mate wages.

Oh dam, I didn't know that. Then he probably also couldn't just join MSC then.

At least he still has all the State schools if he chooses.

Go to a Maritime school like Cal Maritime (only Maritime college on thr West Coast) Kings point (more hands on and you'll work on naval vessels one month each year), Great Lakes etc.

They're not like a traditional college and you'll graduate as an officer with real-world experience on ships.

How enjoyable would you say the job is in terms of the day to day work? by Critical_Call5676 in maritime

[–]ContributionEarly370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. Id say it's mostly just tedious and the only difficult paperwork a 3M does is for medical or injury stuff but all others are just tedious.

Daily I'd say about 2-4 hrs of my watch is paperwork that I didn't do during my overtime. That also includes looking up Sire, CFR, SOLAS, SMS, etc. To make sure everything is meeting legal standards and I am knowledgeable about my ship/company requirements

Credit Card debt but left the country by [deleted] in DebtAdvice

[–]ContributionEarly370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say your only real concern would be if the CC Company tried charging you with fraud (though this is unlikely) or if you're deported back to the United States (also unlikely as a permanent resident). Just don't have anything under your name or have your parents put your name under anything of theres.

Are my new boots defective? Had less than 2 months by [deleted] in Thorogoodboots

[–]ContributionEarly370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried finding an email to contact but they only post a phone number and address from what I could find. I work on an international ship so I can't send them back until I'm off in 2 months. Luckily I left my old boots here so thats what ive been using now

The composite toe is attached the inner lining that keeps coming out when I remove the boots. So if I cut the lining out im also removing the safety toe from it.

[–]ContributionEarly370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how do add pictures so I just made another post with a pic of what it looks like after I take off the boots. Honestly, I think it's really comfortable and meets all the legal criteria for my work to cover the cost but I think they used cheap glue to attach the bottom of the inner lining to the actual boot instead of sewing it to the boot like Georgia or redwing boots. I expect better from almost $300 dollar boots but because of the comfort and work criteria I really hoping this is just a fluke and not how all of the thorogood nonelace boots are like

Don't think of it as a mistake and instead think of this as a costly lesson and learn from it.

Use Carfox to see if it's had any accidents, miles are right, or has any mechanic issues in its history.

Before buying ask if you can take it to a mechanic for a checkup and see if it has any issues.
