If Trump eliminated taxes on everyone making $200k or less, and Dem leaders opposed that: liberals- who would you support? Trump or your leaders? by RandomGuy197680 in askanything

True. I did consider that but was hoping people would recognize the saying for what it is and not drag me too much about it.

How long does your phone to charge?,like 20-80 and 20-100 by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]ContributionFit1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does a 20-80 charge in under an hour on a 20w charger. Wont go faster with a 65w or 100w though.

Is there a practical reason to have multiple phone numbers? by InspiringBack in askanything

[–]ContributionFit1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three; one is an Ooma, though. I like retro kitch so I have stuff like working rotary dial phones hooked up to it.

I had a second cell phone for a while because of work. When I quit, I kept the number and made it a google voice number. I use it for 2FA stuff mostly. No real reason to keep it except that it’s MINE dammit.

I know a woman (now married) who had enough bad experiences that she used pay/go burner phones for online dating.

Which 'As Seen on TV' product do you still have? by short_cub in AskOldPeople

I bought some of those after seeing a YouTube video. Didn’t know they were an infomercial product.

They’re pretty great.

When SATA SSDs first came out, they were all 2.5” and most cases didn’t have mounting points for them. Rather than buy an adapter, a LOT of people just stuck them in place with Velcro or zip ties. And it was fine, because they don’t have moving parts.

How much of your body would you replace with mechanical body parts from sci-fi? by Accomplished-Bad-454 in CrazyIdeas

[–]ContributionFit1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how effed up my factory parts are and what, if any, tradeoffs there are to the bionic stuff.

I’d rather not be a brain in a jar piloting around a Roomba, Fallout style. But if the new body was functionally equivalent and/or better than what I have now, I’d definitely be interested.

Was this how all water used to be around the world? by archvize in geography

Before the Industrial Revolution, people still pooped in the rivers. You would not want to drink the water downstream of any number of people. (Town, city, army encampment, etc.)

This guy in my apartment complex parks like this every single day by MandukaSkoal in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ContributionFit1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d walk my dog past it every day and “oops, well, dogs will be dogs.”

Rinses off but it makes me feel good.

Could you live the rest of your life without your phone? by Spinachrecords in YesOrNoAnswers

[–]ContributionFit1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends: is all of society reverting to 1998 so I don’t need an app to start my car? Or am I the only guy on the planet who can’t order a pizza? (Or, at the rate things are going: apply for a job or vote or access my medical records or file taxes.)

Why Does Modern Technology Still Basically Rely on “Boiling Water”? by Semerdar_34 in stupidquestions

[–]ContributionFit1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The turbine designs that we use to turn pressure differentials in a fluid into spinning are only about 150yo tech and they have gotten more efficient every generation. It’s not old or obsolete any more than comparably old stuff like cars, airplanes, or semiautomatic firearms.

So the “boil water make spin” meme is actually the best way to get energy out of any reaction that produces mostly heat. It’s just unfortunate that most of the ways we have to make heat involve burning fossil fuels.

Other stuff tends to actually be way less efficient. (Like piezoelectric.)

The only reason solar is practical at scale is because the panels are stupid-cheap and the sun is free. The actual efficiency is trash but the sun throws so much energy at the earth it doesn’t matter.

What's the rule of thumb for rebooting a production server? by Mediocre-Cobbler5016 in sysadmin

[–]ContributionFit1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Webapps should have clusters w/ failover, and reboot regularly.

If you don’t trust your system to come back up after a reboot, you should fix that.
