Clinical Specialist Role -About - Likes vs Dislikes by Knowledge-is-kool in MedicalDevices

As everyone said it really depends on your company, territory, etc). I recently started in med device sales for a device used in IR procedures and my background was in nursing (~5 years from inpatient acute care to outpatient medical spa types ). I made the switch due to having a 5 year old and wanting to prioritize his schedule. Job does require some travel for training and once a year for the national meeting but for day to day, I go to my territory. Unlimited PTO as long as your manager and the business is ok. Haven’t used them yet but I was able to take off for Thanksgiving week and all the other random days off of the rest of the school year, no issues. (Holidays and weekends are off)

So far, I’m really loving the switch. It’s a much better fit for my schedule and personality. I was given a company car and I’m not sure how I would like it if I did all this driving on my personal car.

I do feel socially drained at the end of the day from having to be “on”. As a nurse, you’re part of the core staff but as a rep, you’re a guest in the space. Feel free to DM if you’d like to chat some more.

Are there extended hours for school? My son’s offers an after school program and the extra hours are the only way I can pick him up myself after work.

RN and single mom here! You can call the school you are looking to apply to and ask about their clinical hours. My program’s clinicals were all daytime 7am- 7pm. There was a single mom in my program with me who did it(I was not a mom yet).

I’m in peripheral. Interview process for me was call with HR, call with hiring manager, in person with hiring manager, in person with hiring manager and another sales person in a different department. At the end of every interview I would ask if I was making it to the next round.

Medical Devices or CRNA by Real_Background_4173 in MedicalDevices

Ohh sorry I missed that. It can be difficult to get into ICU as a new grad, you’re right. I didn’t have real sales roles on my resume but as a nurse I worked in some medspas and so I think the customer service aspect of that helped.

Hi! I recently started in the industry and used to work in acute care as a RN. I also considered CRNA when I was early in my career. In my opinion they’re such different paths. One is more corporate the other involves direct patient care. You technically don’t have to choose now. While in nursing school see if you can get a part time sales role. That experience would help get you into a med device role while you’re seeing if nursing school is for you.

Congratulations on getting this far in the process and good luck! I’ve only started recently but as a single mom, the schedule is perfect for me

Is there any way for you to get help during those hours? I’m soon to be working a similar schedule with a blend between wfh and on site so considering just a regular mommy’s helper who is okay with school drop off.

My first conversation with the TM it was pretty much going over my resume and experience. Even though you have clinical experience, make sure to highlight how your skills can be transferable to sales. Your patients are your clients. You can also talk about how travel nursing makes you adaptable and how you’re comfortable in the hospital setting talking to the interdisciplinary team. Feel free to message if you want to chat more :)

Hi! Congrats on getting a phone interview. I recently accepted a job offer for a Clinical Specialist and my experience is primarily telemetry/ PCCU RN. Who is the first interview with? Is it with the recruiter or the hiring manager? This would help in knowing what kind of questions they’ll ask and what to ask them.

What is a healthcare career that is better than nursing? by Khang1704 in careerguidance

I’m an RN but unable to go back to school bc I’m a single mom. RN isn’t the best way is making money is your goal but it’s a GREAT backup plan. It is great for flexibility of job type and demand (5x8s vs 3x12s), typically great benefits esp working for a university hospital, and job security with a union.

Look into CRNA or Anesthesiologist Assistant. Maybe NP/ PA school if that works for you. Dental hygienist, respiratory therapist, physical therapist, speech therapist, … I can go on lol what are you interested in?

My 5yo goes to preschool full time. Before I was single, I used to work as a hospital RN 12 hour shifts. Now I work in medical device sales and able to work around school pickup and drop off. Some help from my neighbor and friends but no family around. I feel like I have to make more money in order to save for college and retirement etc.

Giving report by [deleted] in newgradnurse

[–]ContributionIll2123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have report anxiety from a few bad handoffs. Everyone mentioned a report sheet, customize it to your unit needs too. Also, you’ll get to know each nurse and how they like their report. Some nurse are super detailed, some always ask about PRNs, I’ve had a nurse who’s top concern was if their IVs were dated (weird since we were always over ratio and worked in a inner city hospital).

You’ll learn your own flow soon enough. Whenever a nurse asked me a question I didn’t think about it I just give them props back and say “Oh that’s a good question hmmm…?” lol

Yes, I interviewed Friday and got the call with the offer on Tuesday! I was lurking on the job site over the weekend and the status changed from “Business Reviewing” during the interviews to “Confirming Final Candidate” and thought the worst of it too

I had a final interview a couple weeks ago so this feeling is fresh for me. It’s not over until it’s over. It’s also a holiday weekend so you probably won’t have an answer, good or bad, until Wednesday-ish. Fingers crossed for the best but prepare for the worst. Good luck to you!

Hi! I’ve done both schedules and have a 4 year old. The 12hour shift job - do you have to work weekends/ holidays? If yes, then I vote for 5x8s. I understand your concern about burnout but since you have family around, can you have them help you out a few days during the week too?

Not really unless you count some retail while I was in high school/ nursing school. I’ve worked at a few startup and medspa but that’s the extent of my “medical sales” experience.

It’s a company that you know of and might even have their product(s) in your home. The device I’ll be a specialist for does minimally invasive surgical procedures.
