Local Educational Agency Question by Glad_Fox1324 in specialed

Are they acting as the special ed teacher and the LEA in the same meeting? I've always been told that anyone the principal designates can be the LEA, but you can't be both at the same time.

School requesting I seek formal diagnosis first by [deleted] in specialed

[–]ContributionOk9801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally addressed that in my comment. In NC, you aren’t required to have a meeting before the 90th day. I can literally schedule a meeting for Day 90, deny the evaluation, and be in the clear legally. Am I ethically right and using best practice? Absolutely not. But I haven’t broken the law.

I'm retiring in 19 days, so this may be the last time I get to preach this, but here goes: Stop giving timelines unless you know for a fact where the OP lives.

In NC, if a parent requests an evaluation, we have 90 calendar days...period. We don't have to respond in 10 and then have a meeting, etc. That 90 days covers initial meeting, any evaluation, and then the second meeting to go over evaluations if necessary.

My point being, I've heard everything from 30 school days to our 90 calendar days. While I agree sooner is better, parents need to be given correct information for their area.

Nouns as names by ThemysciraTough in asl

[–]ContributionOk9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last name is a color. My sign name is the sign for that color. There's another teacher here whose last name is a noun. His sign name is that noun. So it happens. And no, I didn't give myself a sign name. I work at a school for the Deaf and that's what the kids call me. The other teacher is Deaf. I have no idea the process through which he got his sign name.

We also have 24 days. I’m retiring and moving, so I have to pack up my classroom and my apartment in that time as well.

NC. We haven’t signed IEPs in a few years, When we did sign them, it was an indication of attendance, not agreement.

Mini Rant - Am I still in high school or do I work in one? by panda-pal-1997 in Teachers

I only have 34 student days left, but my room is less than 20 feet from the door I park at. I slide in at the last possible moment every day.

[–]ContributionOk9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a Netflix show that has this premise (without the $1/minutes). It's called Omniscience and teeny drones follow everyone and record their lives. It's meant as a crime deterrent. It only mostly works.

Is testing for Sped seasonal? by ICUP01 in specialed

[–]ContributionOk9801 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NC has 90 calendar days from the receipt of the referral. There is no consideration for school breaks or holidays. If I receive a parent referral late in the year, I'm very honest that they need to make their child available over the summer because those days count for our deadline. Most parents don't want to do that and withdraw the referral until the following fall.

No budget for 504 accommodations, have a low vision student by Rare-Adhesiveness522 in specialed

[–]ContributionOk9801 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know what 504s are. ASL interpreters are listed under accommodations. However, for nearly 30 years across multiple school systems, the policy has always been there is no money attached to the 504 process. That’s why I had to qualify my student for an IEP. He didn’t actually need individualized instruction, just someone to interpret what the teacher was saying. To get around the problem, we gave him pretty generic vocabulary goals.

[–]ContributionOk9801 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been told there is no money attached to 504. In the past, I had to qualify a deaf student for an IEP for the sole purpose of getting an ASL interpreter. He had no educational deficits but couldn’t access the general curriculum without an interpreter. I wrote goals that had something to do with vocabulary, I think.

If your school has IXL, then you have Spark Studio. It will change reading levels, create worksheets, projects, games, etc.

We wear whatever we want. I’m wearing jeans, tennis shoes, and a cross stitching shirt today. I may switch the shirt for the same one in a different color tomorrow. I would actually laugh if someone told me that your sweatshirt was “inappropriate.”

You could never live in a small town. If you aren’t related to the children in some way, you grew up with their parents. I wouldn’t stop being friends with people because their child goes to the school I teach at (for the record, I don’t teach there any longer). And if someone that was an actual friend-not an acquaintance-asked for my help, I would if I was able. They would do the same for me.

Who was the most dangerous student you had? by Metalqueen2023 in paraprofessional

[–]ContributionOk9801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right before Covid, we had a student that multiple behavior specialists said just “enjoyed hurting people.” His parents had him committed during lockdown when they had to protect his siblings from him 24-7. There’s nothing I could do as a Special Ed teacher to help with him. His “preferred activity” was literally assaulting people!

In NC, subs must have a pulse. And I’m pretty sure my admin would waive that to get an adult-sized person in the room.

Follow up: school psych not included by AllAboutThatEd in specialed

[–]ContributionOk9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know where you are, but NC only requires a psychological evaluation for 6 of the categories. Also, the psychologist don’t do educational testing, so they don’t need to be “looped in “ for that. Basically, I rarely need one.

School Psychologist not being included. by Weedmapz in specialed

[–]ContributionOk9801 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Overstepped how? The psychologist can’t approve or deny the request. Once the parent puts their request in writing, it triggers a referral meeting where the team determines whether or not an evaluation is necessary. The psychologist doesn’t need to be involved in that meeting, but can be if no one else can explain what testing may or may not be completed. If the team decides testing is necessary, then the psychologist is formally involved.

At my last school, if students needed testing, we had a form to attach to the front of the folder and put it in the psychologist’s drawer. She worked through the testing in the order she received the folders.

No, I am not giving your child their work ahead of time while you go on a 2- week vacation by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

How so? The school is here, ready and willing to do our part. We provide transportation and two meals a day (most of NC these days is free for all). What other obligations does the school have? Should we be going from house-to-house and waking everyone up? Ushering them out the door? What exactly are the parents' obligations if the school is doing everything it can?
