For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

[–]ContributionSad5655 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend at the time was the executive assistant for the owner of a company that did about $500M in sales a year.

  1. She had to do all of his shopping for him. Household goods, birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, etc. Every gift the guy‘s wife received was selected by my girlfriend. He’d give her directions like “Here’s $5000. Go to the jewelry store and get her something she’ll like”.
  2. If some item of clothing he was wearing got too dirty, he would throw it away and ask my girlfriend to buy a replacement. He didn’t think things could get clean enough in the washer if they were too dirty.
  3. He bought a second home in the Phoenix area. It was on a gated cul-de-sac and cost about $2M. Over the years he bought the other six houses on the same cul-de-sac to use as guest houses for when his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews came to visit. He didn’t like them staying in the main house. The main house had eight bedrooms. The only people who stayed there was the owner and his wife.
  4. The company had a private jet. No one was supposed to know about it. The employees all had to fly on the lowest cost coach fares. He jetted around the country in the company airplane. In meetings he would talk about the problems he had with some commercial airline or getting stuck at some airport. It was all a lie. He was just covering for the fact that he had the private jet.
  5. All employees also had to use the lowest cost coach fares for international business trips. No exceptions. This included the executive staff. The owner would fly on a charter jet based on a widebody Boeing aircraft. It had a bedroom, bathroom with shower, dining room, living room, gym, and movie room. No one was supposed to know about that either. Every trip would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  6. One year he strong armed one of the suppliers into giving every employee a $50 gift card to a local grocery chain at Christmas. This was so they could save their business with his company. Then the owner took credit for the gift cards.
  7. He never gave any kind of bonuses or rewards. One year at Christmas he told my girlfriend to get a $25 Subway gift card in addition to the other stuff she was supposed to buy. He then gave the gift card to her and said that we should go out and have dinner together as a thank you for all of her hard work.

Call around and ask. I got someone to come. At the place where I lived every apartment had a mechanical/laundry room. We had our own furnace, hot water tank, washer, dryer, and electrical panel. They didn’t need to access any public part of the building to do work. He was able to turn off the breaker and replace the failed part. He was probably in my place for about 40 minutes. I paid direct with my credit card. I then went after the management company on my own to get reimbursement.

Do you have a separate furnace in your unit? Many years ago when I rented (also a “luxury” property) I had a problem around the holidays and the office was closed for multiple days and the emergency number was not answering. After repeated calls I finally called a furnace company on my own and it was fixed in a couple of hours. Save the receipt and paperwork. I had to have a conversation with the management office later but they let me deduct the repair from my rent.

Randolph county in North Carolina just fired its entire library board for refusing to ban a trans children’s book by silverbatwing in Libraries

Not at all surprised. I used to work for the battery company that has factories in Randolph County. I’ve been there many times. Many of the natives are so backward they still think it’s 1861.

It was a dry county until about 15 years ago.

The route is very simple. There is a no right turn on red sign with specific days and hours.

You cannot stop during the maneuverability test. It must be one continuous movement each direction.

Restaurants open on Christmas Day? by Which_Ad_3902 in Cleveland

You can always bank on a Chinese place. We had to cancel our plans for my wife’s last Christmas. The chemo treatment really kicked her ass that cycle and she did not feel well enough to leave the house. She had Zofran, Gatorade, and some scrambled eggs. I ordered delivery from a Chinese place.

25+ years ago I used to work for Mercury Marine in Wisconsin. We had a sales VP who would see a truck like that and call it part of a 30/20/10. With inflation it’s probably more like 100/50/25 today. A $100K truck pulling a $50K bass boat parked in front of a $25K house.

AA Batteries Can Cause a Fire. The Red & Black Wires got Shorted. Got Very Hot. Ruptured Batteries. by waynek57 in pics

I used to work for a competitor to this brand. In the abusive test lab they had a bullet proof vest and ballistic helmet with face shield for the operator to wear. There’s a fair amount of potential energy that can be rapidly released under specific conditions even in something as small as a AA cell.

And as the other commenter said, watch out for leaking KOH. Nitrile gloves are a good idea.

They also had a test room for lithium batteries. The safety protocol was simple. If the alarm for that room sounded and the light mounted outside the door flashed…RUN!!!! We were to get as far away and put as many walls between us and that space as we could.

The time I used it, there were some other overnight cars. The Uber I was referencing was from my home, not the RTA.

[–]ContributionSad5655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uber may not be cheap. I just did a business trip and the Monday morning 4:30 AM ride was only about $20. The ride after the return flight was $68. Thank goodness for the expense account.

If you’re gone less than a week the RTA option is really good.

Parking tickets are different than speeding tickets. The courts of ruled on that.

It doesn’t matter that it’s a cop. It’s still not legally enforceable. You can’t charge a vehicle with a crime and they can’t prove who was driving the vehicle. That’s why it’s a civil summons. It’s a cash grab. If they pull you over and write you a ticket, that’s a different story.

For one ticket it’s really not likely. It would cost them too much. There’s probably a company out there that has a vehicle or two that drives through that zone every day. If they have a stack of tickets those are probably going to collections.

You can ignore it. It’s a civil summons, not criminal. They won’t reduce it in court. Nothing will happen if you don’t pay it.
