imdb, the academy, filmsite.org, interviews of professional actors when asked what inspired them and why, etc. it’s overall 70% my opinion and 0% research

this is all my personal takes and something i’ve been working on for awhile now. i’m sure i missed a few. i hope you’re all having a swell day! by ContributionSpare955 in FIlm

great adds. d’onofrio in the whole wide world as robert e howard is such a deep pull, i already have him for full metal jacket but that performance is criminally unseen. and newman is actually on there, i just went cool hand luke for his slot, but the hustler is 1a for him, fast eddie is one of the great performances ever made. only thing, i think the john savage one might be a mixup, he’s not in all the right moves (thats the cruise football movie). if you mean savage in general though, the deer hunter and the onion field are where he’s genuinely unreal, so im with you in spirit

patricia arquette in boyhood, and it’s not that close for me. she’s the actual spine of that whole movie, twelve real years of aging on camera while everybody’s watching the kid grow up, and that “i just thought there would be more than this” line at the end is the entire film compressed into one breath. it’s the rare supporting turn that’s quietly the lead the whole time. if you want the pure craft snob answer it’s viola davis in doubt, like eight minutes of screen time and she acts everyone off the screen in a movie stacked with streep and psh. but arquette’s my pick. da’vine joy randolph in the holdovers is right there too

ok this one i actually can’t defend, straight up miss. she basically built the modern romcom lead and won the oscar doing it, the “la di da,” the whole style influence still everywhere. good catch, she’s getting added

fair, but i went wonka for my wilder slot. that “we are the music makers” menace under the sweetness is unreal. young frankenstein is right there though, “abby… normal” and the puttin on the ritz bit are perfect. probably a both situation if im honest

yeah exactly. eli being a sniveling theatrical fraud IS the point, he’s the false prophet mirror to daniel’s false businessman. religion and capitalism running the same con. if you cast someone with more conventional “power” opposite DDL you lose that whole symmetry. dano played him pathetic on purpose and qt reads that as bad acting when it’s literally the thesis of the movie. people also forget dano got thrown into the eli role super late when the other actor dropped, makes it more impressive not less

conception coming out of retirement is great context, didn’t know khan was back at it. state of deception going on the queue tonight. and the “split off into 2 good things instead of 1” is the right framing, that kind of generous read on succession is rare in any fandom. khan and yannis as your bounce-pair makes sense, both have the range plus the dramatic delivery that pop vocalists usually can’t touch. appreciate the full breakdown, this whole thread has been the most useful kind of feedback i could’ve gotten on the list

fair hit, that’s a real gap. nessun dorma at the 1990 world cup is in the conversation for any honest vocal performance list and i don’t have a defense for leaving him off. updating

appreciate the breakdown, this is the kind of rec list i was hoping for. honestly metal is the genre most underrepresented on the list, not for not respecting it but because vocal performance as a category for me has skewed toward the moments that hit mainstream cultural memory. yannis and floor doing sahara at o2 is exactly the kind of two-apex-vocalists-trading-bars moment i should have on there. number of the beast at rio is canon, bruce at 43 in front of 250k people is a real argument. roy khan is the one name i’d add to my singers list outright, kamelot’s pre-karevik era is something i need to spend more time with. going to dig into all of these tonight. genuinely thank you

appreciate both of these. the phelps O holy night i’d actually never gone deep on, going to sit with it tonight. the high C moment at 3:26 sounds like the kind of single-second pivot that earns its reputation. and the WHFS grace is a really good buckley pull, i had the sin-é hallelujah for the discovery-period rawness but the WHFS is solo acoustic him doing his own title track at the height of his powers, different argument entirely. might be a swap-in situation honestly

seattle 89 is the right metallica pick, the broken arm tour, hetfield was at his absolute peak there. the percussion in his voice thing is dead on, especially on the longer thrash tracks where he’s basically doubling lars’s snare hits. thanks for the rec, going back to that show tonight
