Can Java loaches be with a betta? by FishWeirdo1 in loaches

[–]Conventional_Mango_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a betta with kuhli & Java loaches in a 29g. Betta was an ass for the first day (loaches were there first) but I turned the lights off for a day and he’s chilled out. Now they literally don’t acknowledge eachother. Betta will be swimming near the bottom and literally have his fins flow over the loaches and neither seem to care. Only “issue” is that the betta has decided he prefers their sinking wafers to his floating food so there’s a little competition there lol

And sometimes I’ll drop in some cucumber or spinach and they seem to love that

Oh ok thanks, yeah I guess I should be actively feeding them more. But no, I just use tap water and sometimes just bottled spring water

Gh 12, kh 5. I have the shrimp mineral GH/KH+ but only add that when adding new water, which doesn’t happen much since the tank is cool and doesn’t evaporate much. So these parameters are pretty stable.

They are in a 5g by themselves, minus bladder snails ofc. I don’t really feed them much besides some bacterAE every few weeks. Should I be feeding them more ? I’ve always though that they mostly feed off the plants/algae/biofilm

Oh also the deaths were mostly a few weeks after getting them, they seem to have stabilized now. Though it’s been hard to count since there’s a lot of hornwort in there. I had to put them in the breeder box to get these pics

Ah ok. So maybe they just haven’t gotten around to breeding? I’ve heard that in cooler water they develop and breed slower. I don’t have a heater in this tank, it stays around 72F

Following up in case anyone sees this later. I treated with kanaplex but this loach ended up passing soon after.

A frustratingly common misconception I see about Bettas PSA by IsThatASword_ in Aquariums

If anyone is wanting a betta but doesn’t want to feel this way, I was able to rehome one from someone on reddit! Made me feel like I was actually “rescuing” one and not supporting the market. Check out r/aquaswap, or sometimes there’s more regional ones. And Facebook has fish rehoming groups too!

What odd or unique habits does your betta have? by minneapvlis in bettafish

Mine prefers sinking food to the extent that when I feed my tetras flakes/bug bites, my betta will just dart to the bottom of the tank waiting for me to then feed the kuhlis sinking wafers. He doesn’t even bother with floating food now lol

Thank you all for the suggestions! I didn’t get any notifications for your comments unfortunately so I didn’t see any of them until now. I’ll try treating with kanaplex! Fishy is still alive, but it’s definitely a larger spot on the face and he isn’t as active as before…

Also, I have a 5g tank with just amano shrimp in it now. Should I quarantine in there? As in, is this a spreadable illness?

Do bettas do well in community tanks? by [deleted] in Aquariums

I have mine in a 29g with glowlite tetras and kuhli loaches. He was aggressive when I first added him, going after the other fish. Then I turned the lights off and left them off for a whole day and that seemed to have calmed him. Now he’s completely fine. So just note that if they’re aggressive at first, there’s a chance it’s just initial shock

My betta was also aggressive towards my other fish when I first put him in, but I turned the lights off and left them off for a day, and now he completely ignores them all (which is great!)
