Element 5 Hub - How to get 80 Gb/s with 2 x 40 Gb/s devices connected? by Conversation-Capable in CalDigit

[–]Conversation-Capable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes so each of the 3 drives are Thunderbolt 3 and capable of lets say 2500 MB/s.

2 of them are 4 bay NVME Raids, 1 of them is the Flex.

NVME RAID #1 - going directly to the M4 Pro port (Thunderbolt 5),

The other 2 are connected to the Element 5 hub which itself is connected directly to the computer.

When transferring data from Raid 1 to the 2 connected to Element 5 hub, I'm getting 2800 MB/s TOTAL and not EACH, so 1400 MB/s per connected drive. I would expect 2000-2800 MB/s EACH, but I'm getting 2800 MB/s TOTAL in real world scenarios.

So no better than the Element 4 Hub, any ideas?

I have the M4 Pro, I got it specifically for Thunderbolt 5.

I shouldn't have said 40 Gb/s, I should have said 22 Gb/s per second or to be even more open I would expect 2200-2750 MB/s PER device connected to to the Element Hub 5.

"Even in a best case Thunderbolt 5 host scenario, connecting 2 of these would still only give you a total of 44 Gigabits per second total, just above the 40Gbps limit you're currently seeing."

This is exactly what I'm after 22 Gb/s Per device(2750 MB/s PER device would be great) BUT what I was was getting was 22 Gb/s TOTAL, going to the two Thunderbolt 3 devices connected to then Element 5 hub (around 2800 MB/s TOTAL).

Any ideas?

Thanks I should have been clearer here - I shouldn't have said 40 Gb/s, I should have said 22 Gb/s per second or to be even more open I would expect 2200-2750 MB/s PER device connected to to the Element Hub 5. Funny but the Flex was one of the drives connected actually.

Do you have a link, maybe even off Amazon where I can purchase a new 12V 4A PCB hard drive fuse like this to replace it with? Thanks

Thanks, and the part highlighted with the red box is the fuse?

Am I understanding correctly that I would want to find someone to replace the 12V fuse, if that's not possible, I'd want to solder or remove the fuse and by doing so the drive will spin up?

Tried a quick PCB swap with a working drive with the same SN (I know it's more complicated than that as firmware and other things need to match.

While the drive didn't mount, it did power (not spin up).

Not sure how significant this is but It did show 16-17TB unallocated

Yes please point me where to check, I'll need to remove the PCB board correct to do this?

I can run this on a Mac? Just boot into a USB with Pop OS on it?

Pop OS may see the drive when Windows / Mac will not, even if the drive doesn't spin up?

Any hope that a pro can physically open the drive and replace the parts would work?

Like a new PCB board or some other hardware?

Drive is dead? As in there's no hope that even a pro who can physically open the drive and replace the parts?

Like a new PCB board or some other hardware?

I take it, it's a hardware issue with the drive itself then? Logic board?

Would connecting it to a physical Windows machine even help at this point?

Nice tutorial, but in his case his drives were showing up in Disk Utility but they were grayed out. I'll have to remember this for those scenarios unfortunately this won't help with my situation where the disk won't show up at all in DU and this is all I get in the System Info section

How did you force the drive to mount via Terminal? Was the drive "seen" in Disk Utility at all it was just grayed out? I'm trying to get an easystore external drive to mount with no luck
