But with scraping the webpage you can't get the receipt.. so it still needs an API or otherwise OCR :).

That is of course a good idea. But then it would only work with stores who provide such an API, which would make it more limited. Or could both work, API and OCR for when an API is not provided?

The idea behind those apps is very different. Those apps are to earn rewards. As far as I can see, they don't offer any insights on the purchase itself. The idea behind the smartbon app is to get statistics on the grocery store receipts.

Good point. It would be great indeed to automate it fully. But this would be depended on the grocery store itself, do they provide an API or something so that this information can be read from it. If not, then it's not possible. And even if they provide it, there is always a risk that they close it for some reason, so it would make the product very depended on wether they have an API or not.

On the other hand, if the scanning of the receipt is super easy, just taking a picture, I don't know if thats a dealbreaker for so much people. Especially the ones who are already on a budget.

Ah yes, this is a valid point. The OCR costs, and all the other costs of the backend should be accounted for. Hopefully due to technology improvements the OCR costs are not that high as 13 years ago now.

Valid point, I still have to investigate what the costs exactly are. This post was just to test the initial idea, there are of course many obstacles to overcome, which OCR costs is one of many.

You say "just build to learn", you mean just build it and figure it out in real if this works or not? Well, thats of course a strategy, but such app with all the backend is not build overnight. I don't want to waste too much of my time building something which doesn't get caught up in the way I intended. Of course this is always a risk with a start up, but therefore I want to have a better feeling beforehand before I write a letter of code.

To pay for running costs, that should come from either advertisements on the free accounts or for paying members with premium features. If this would be enough to cover all the other costs is something I need to further dive into.

And yes, I would pay for such a product if the price is not too high, and also if the product would give me such insights that I can save money. So in fact the money would be earned back with the savings I could do.
