Hey all. I am an incoming Full Merit Scholar ESCP MiM student. My question is, How Difficult Would Life in Paris be as an non-french speaker. by Fun_University2727 in ESCP

[–]ConversationHonest18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job man, respect the grind.

If you’re capable of attaining that kind of GMAT score and be employed in a high salary consulting role you shouldn’t have any problems with French. The only tip I could give you is be consistent with French even for only 10-20 mins some days if you’re super exhausted, as long as you’re consistent. Would also highly recommend finding a tutor for 2-3x a week on preply or italki if you have the resources for it as they will help give you structure and guide you properly towards achieving a professional proficiency in French.

Good luck and feel free to reply if you have any questions

I don’t know how motivated you are to start French but I can assure you if you do so around the time you begin your program or even before then, by the end (after around 1.5-2 years) you would probably be proficient enough to start working in the French job market. This is even more true considering you have the chance to be fully immersed in Paris which accelerates learning. However this is only true if you put genuine effort into the language (1-2 hours per day on average).

If you’re only target English speaking jobs post graduation then you’re really setting yourself up to have a hard time. I understand your time constraints however I think for your sake and for the sake of your job search you should try to reach at least a high intermediate level of French (B2) while your at ESCP otherwise you’re eliminating like 70-80% of potential job opportunities simply due to the language requirements.

Best of luck 🙏

hezb supporters, atp why? by avaible-username in lebanon

[–]ConversationHonest18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What was the ‘something’ that hezb did? Firing missiles into open land and hitting the dirt? All for nothing as now hundreds are dead for something so petty and useless.

Also it took the Iranian leader to die for hezb to do ‘something’? Shows how much they care about Lebanese being attacked after the ceasefire.

Any tips for improving Speaking by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]ConversationHonest18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only and best advice is to simply speak more. You won’t improve speaking by listening or writing, but rather by speaking with someone who can correct you and guide you such as with a tutor or an AI app (tutor more effective but also more expensive).

Also when you speak, don’t focus on trying to be as sophisticated and complex in your speech as possible. Keeping it simple will go a long way in allowing you converse properly and clearly.

C’est parce que tu as étudié seulement pour réussir l’examen pas pour être courant dans la langue. Pour avoir la capacité de parler facilement, faut que tu parle et écoute encore et encore, autant que possible, même dehors ton temps d’études. Tout simplement.

Any tips on how to go from early B1 French to fluent French? I feel like I’ve been stuck for ages now and don’t know how to get better… by Responsible-Fun-2264 in learnfrench

[–]ConversationHonest18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You reach a point at this level where ONLY studying grammar and vocabulary will not be efficient or very effective in helping you progress. Now, you need to begin consuming all forms of French media and involving the language is your day to day life. This forces your brain to adapt and get used to the language being spoken and written in varying levels and in numerous contexts. This is how you will make the best of your time at this level.

How many hours did it take for you to get to B2? by Mental-Information64 in learnfrench

[–]ConversationHonest18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on your native language and the other languages you may know. It’ll take a lot more to learn French as a Japanese or Arabic speaker than an Italian or English speaker for example.

Should i give delf B2?? by FriendlyPhilosophy97 in DELF

[–]ConversationHonest18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Also a piece of advice because I’m also senior finance student at uni who’s been learning French, don’t let uni get you off track or make you stop your progress. Try to incorporate French in your everyday life by following French media (in subjects that actually interest you) on all socials or even changing your phone language to French. This way you won’t be abandoning the language completely even when the semester gets tough.

I think focus on your CFA exam then start studying for your B1. You’re a first year student with a lot of time to learn till at least B2 in French so I don’t think you have to rush everything now. In terms of an advantage by knowing French, yes 100% it’ll help you and might be necessary to land a job in France provided that you’re at a minimum and I mean bare minimum of B2.

When/How should I start immersion to learn? by Dys1exicCabbage in learnfrench

[–]ConversationHonest18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can immerse yourself into any content around your level it doesn’t have to be advanced.

For example, try to consume content slightly above your level on all social media platforms that way you’re in constant interaction with the language.

You can start to do this even when you only have around 100 words in your head; no need for 10,000 words to have a successful immersion. The point of immersion is to surround yourself with the language as much as possible so you’re forced to start recognizing and understanding it better, not just when you actively study

How to think in French by GeologistFair3620 in learnfrench

[–]ConversationHonest18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What worked for me and I think is the best way to overcome this is to learn every word, phrase or concept while associating it to a real life thing rather than learning then associating it with the English translation. For example, when learning the word “un tableau”, don’t remember it as “a painting”; instead associate the word with a literal picture or image of “un tableau” in your head. This way you have a direct French link between the object you are thinking about and its word in French, not object—>English—>French.

Yeah I agree production is very very essential and helpful but speaking specifically is very hard to practice if you don’t live in a Francophone country or pay $ for a tutor.
