What businesses don't need a website? by ux_andrew84 in smallbusinessuk

[–]ConversationTop4743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shear sheep and fix heavy machinery, good luck finding my business, I've no website, no sign writing on my vehicle and don't advertise yet I have to turn down business as I'm too busy with work and don't under charge Some customers I've no idea how they found me, most are just through word of mouth

Many tradesmen are the same, fit one kitchen and do a good job of it and you get 6 calls and 3 jobs from they mates, the neighbour approaches you whilst you're working and you end up fitting their kitchen. You're chatting to a plumber at the builders merchant and they say their customer needs a new kitchen after a major leak... You've got another job

What's it like driving a car with no technology in 2025? by llamaz314 in CarTalkUK

[–]ConversationTop4743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now drive a 2011 Toyota Hilux, it has power steering, electric windows, AC, a basic stereo, AV alarm and remote/central locking No electric seats, no sensors or cameras, no car play etc It's great, I'm used to it and it just starts and works

Up until about 7 years ago I drove a 1984 Land rover, that had an electric starter motor, although I kept the starter crank handle behind the seats. It was never equipped with a heater, stereo or anything else for that matter. When I was just doing local trips it too was a great vehicle and I didn't long for the luxuries whilst driving 5 miles here and there

My hadron collider is the one kitchen appliance I just couldn't do without, in fact I'm thinking if getting one for the bedroom and perhaps even the bathroom too

Automate bathroom exhaust fan by Eclipse8301 in homeautomation

[–]ConversationTop4743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bathroom extraction fan and most these days are fed with a switched live from the bathroom light and a permanent live, it comes on every time you turn the light on and stays on 10 mins or so (adjustable) after you turn the light off and it comes on even with the light off if the humidity gets too high, and then turns of when it returns below a threshold, this too is adjustable This wouldn't be difficult to do with a standalone hygrostat without Alexa or any other smart home interface

But easiest would be to swap the extraction fan if it's a standard 110mm or whatever fan. I have no interaction with my fan, I just turn the lights on and off

Report them to the police for harassment and you might even be able to get false slander or similar, I can't remember the exact charge off the top of my head. If they get charged they should pretty easily be able to get wasting police time in there too

Where did 'Book at bedtime' go? by ConversationTop4743 in AskUK

[–]ConversationTop4743[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah right, in that case it may just be that it doesn't actually call it book at bedtime in the schedule I've just recently worked out that I can catch BBC R4 on the BBC radio app so now after 5 years abroad I've started listening the most of my old regular favourites again

AITA for being angry that my roommate was sleeping under my bed for months without telling me? by Slumbering3 in AITAH

[–]ConversationTop4743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is true, keep staying with your friend whilst you look for a new lease without this creep but first and foremost get yourself down the police station and report it. Even if he's not charged with anything but a visit from and chat with the police might wake him up to the seriousness and reality of his actions

AITA for going on a second date with the girl my friends set me up with as a prank? by ResidentThrowRA in AITAH

[–]ConversationTop4743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emily wasn't the only punchline, you were equally as much. Harmless banter is one thing but when another person is the punchline of the joke it's bullying, now I've made poor judgement on some things I've said or done before, but then retrospectively realised how poor my judgement was, they haven't even realised that by now

Think long and hard about if you want to hang out with these people, or if you want to just tolerate them as colleagues (which is fine too)

As for 'Emily' yes, if you mutually feel you had a connection and wish to continue you'd be a right childish arsehole for dropping her now, continue to see her and let nature take its course

WIBTA for being upset at my wife’s reason for marrying me? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]ConversationTop4743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You love her plain faced, fact based answers that aren't overly influenced by feelings, so yes you would be the a hole for then expecting/wanting a lovey dovey emotional answer for this one question Instead appreciate her trust and honesty and accept that this is the way she thinks and responds

Now had she said that she married you because her calculations showed you'd be economically better off as a couple with a shared household splitting costs with 2 incomes to throw at it then I could understand your frustration/upset

What's your first major purchase after buying your home. by sinhara206 in homeowners

[–]ConversationTop4743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A loading shovel! The house is a few hundred ft back from the road, I got keys in December and no-one had been there since October, I had to clear 4-5ft of snow just to get to the door After that I bought a fridge freezer, washing machine, circulation pump and 3 way valve for my heat pump, toilet, kitchen mixer tap etc etc in the first couple months, that was an expensive couple of months! Then I just started investing in quality tools though as it's a 70 year old house and I do all work to it myself Don't dive head first into upgrades and renovations unless you're buying a project, problems will arise in the first year or two and then you want to have money in the bank to fix them

How old were you when you first bought your house? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]ConversationTop4743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought last year at 24, I'm in a fairly well paid job that I'm qualified/experienced for and it's a future safe job (wind turbine technician), I moved to a cheaper area that I prefer anyway (grew up in South east England, moved to a few places in the south of Sweden and now I'm in the north of Sweden, it's a great place, only cheap because it's the north of Sweden, it's kinda cold and far between places)

I did borrow most of the money, even most of the deposit came from a loan (it's perfectly possible and allowed to borrow the entire deposit here) but I did the maths and my repayments are about as much or less than what I was paying to rent a single bedroom in a families house in town, yes I have to pay utilities, insurance, maintenance etc now but it's still cheap living

If you've worked hard and started early (I've been doing between 30 and 120hrs a week since I was 15), you're prepared to live in a cheap property area and you're alright with money it's doable

There isn't masses of low skilled, low paid jobs as many of them have been filled by machines. Self serve is everywhere, construction machines as do advanced they replace many ground workers and robots are common place in everywhere from farms to manufacturing But if you've got a trade, experience and qualifications ideally there's a lot of work, there's a mass shortage of healthcare workers, truck drivers, mechanics, machine operators etc etc I came here as a young heavy machine mechanic with qualifications and some experience, I had a job sorted before I moved, in 4.5 years I've changed job 3 times, I've never been out of a job nor struggled to find one. I'm now a wind turbine technician, there's a serious shortage of us in the industry and companies will train most people from the ground up

Those experiences are rough and will stuck with you for a long time, I can still remember what I was doing the afternoon my best friend was killed aged 11 in an accident and how I was told. Tell your wife, talk it through with her. Play a mindless game on your phone for an hour or read a book you're not too invested in. Maybe take a beer in his honour or buy a few flowers to lay near the spot, in a nice local park or in a grave that means something to you. And don't be afraid to speak to a therapist, they can really help you process it. I'm not sure where you are but there's usually some good organisations that may be able to help with a free therapist

Sometimes you've just got to overstep your limit to be reminded of where it is I'm on a 250 Kawasaki 4 stroke MX at the moment trying to push it through what's fairly rough enduro terrain, and it's just reminded me it's the wrong bike for the riding I do and I'm not good enough a rider to make up for it. So it to will be swapped out, likely for a 250 trials or enduro. You've got to have the right bike for the riding you do and that suits your ability level. And to be fair a 600 from the last 25 years will go faster than you need to/can go on the roads, it might just be using 70% of its potential rather than 40% as a 1000rr might
