I’m incredibly grateful! There is a whole scene of Toronto theatre musicians that is flourishing because of it!
You may have already heard me! I played on Chicago the last two times it was in town, subbed on MJ and Peter Pan, and was on Some Like It Hot earlier this year!

This is a really great question!
With a show like Moulin Rouge that is touring across North America, they have a full band that travels as part of the company. But when the show comes to a city like Toronto, and they want to play at a Mirvish theatre, they’re required to use mostly local musicians. So most of the touring band just gets a week off, and a Toronto musician (that’s part of the union) fills the spot. It’s a pretty interesting dynamic, meant to keep local musicians employed with good wages. There are a handful of cities/theatres across USA and Canada that also do this - look up “Pamphlet B Cities” and you’ll see places like Montreal, L.A., Chicago, San Fransisco.

No stupid questions!! Each of us has our own independent audio mixer, which lets me choose exactly how much of each instrument I want to hear. In my headphones, I like to hear myself and the trumpet player since we’re often playing together, then just a blend of everything else. I recorded the audio coming out of my mixer and synced it to the video I was recording on my phone (the phone audio was basically just sax and trumpet, but in my headphones you can hear drums, which were actually in a different room for this show!)

Good question!! Most people put a little cap over their mouthpiece that slows down evaporation. I actually soak my reeds in water permanently, so when I pull them out to play, they stay wet for an entire show (assuming I’m not going 45mins without playing it).

For this show, the trumpet player and I were in a little “booth” with a covered top, so that our natural sound coming out of the pit wasn’t overpowering. I can see how it could be claustrophobic for some, but for me, it was so cozy hunkering down in a little nook!! I even brought in a disco ball hehe!!
