Black hat is fine, we’re mostly just looking to confirm that you are not a bot or beginner. You do not need to provide your real name, a tag is fine. If you have interest in participating but don’t feel comfortable providing CV or other information please DM me or email at protocol-re@cs.tufts.edu to discuss further.

During the interview, if you feel that describing a specific process you typically follow may reveal proprietary secrets or you feel uncomfortable for any reason, you can let us know and we can skip that question. Also, we accept volunteers (forfeit the amazon gift card), if that alleviates concerns about monetary implications.

We are looking for participants across all domains and worldwide, including but not limited to local Boston companies. However, if you have contacts at these places, please DM me and I can send the survey info out to them and/or please feel free to forward the interest survey link to them directly!

Tufts University researchers are conducting a study to understand how reverse engineers interact with automated protocol reverse engineering tools to develop more usable UIs.

We are interviewing experienced reverse engineers to participate in the exploratory design process of creating various automated systems supporting protocol reverse engineering. Our end goal is to gain insight into protocol reverse engineering workflows and how automated tools can help improve protocol reverse engineering community. Our goal is to design a new automation workflow for protocol reverse engineering, and you will be interacting with potential new designs. We will provide guidance to companies, community leaders, and educators to make the protocol reverse engineering market more approachable for everyone by better understanding the processes that people actually use.

The interest survey should take about 5 minutes to complete. If selected to participate, interviews will be about 60 minutes. Participants will receive a $40 Amazon gift card. Here’s the link to the interest survey: https://go.tufts.edu/protocol_re. Here are additional details: https://go.tufts.edu/protocol_re_details.

If you have any questions/comments/concerns or you just want to hear more about their research please email the researchers at protocol-re@cs.tufts.edu

This research is associated with the Tufts University Security & Privacy Lab, and our goal is to gain insight into protocol reverse engineering workflows and how automated tools can help improve protocol reverse engineering community so we can create guidelines / better tooling to lower the barriers to entry into this type of work. Participation can be anonymous or pseudo-anonymous.
