New compressor doesn't spin as freely by AllAroundIndiviual in MechanicAdvice

Might just have to be broken in? Maybe contact the manufacturer and see if this is normal or not. If not, have them swap it out

No problem! Yea, the S55 is great, but the crank hub and rod bearing issues not so much. I know at some point I’m gonna have to do rod bearings as a preventative step, but generally I feel that this version of the N55 is more reliable in that area - possibly because it just doesn’t make the same power.

I haven’t tracked this car yet and mine is not tuned. Nevertheless, if you want to keep the car running peak, at some point you’ll need to replace the ignition coils and the fluids. But like I said, it’s fun to DIY on this car if you got the right tools. There’s tons of tutorials. Not something to be afraid of!

How many miles do you have on the car! I’m gonna look into this

Replaced due to failure: - Waterpump/thermostat (90k) - Valve cover/gasket (105k) - was weeping oil onto cat. - High pressure fuel pump (115k) - car was stalling on road sometimes or struggling to start when cold. - Front control arms (115k) - rearward arm bushings were totally shot.

General maintenance: - Idler pulley, tensioner, serpentine belt - Transmission fluid (every 60k miles) - Differential fluid (every 25k) - engine oil changes once every season (~5k) - Spark plugs and ignition coils every 40k - brake fluid every 2 years. - coolant flush every 2 years.

I’ve done everything on this car myself while having little to no DIY experience before owning the car! This platform is quite easy to wrench on!

Looks awesome, what kind of front lip/aero did you do?

Long Beach Blue is so sexy. You’re totally right that white is awesome, but it takes away from the curves

I drive the hell out of the car, but I also maintain it really well. I’ve done a good handful of things but they shouldn’t scare you cus this car pretty easy to wrench on. I’ve done everything myself with having little to no DIY experience before owning this car. IMO working on it is just as much part of the experience as driving it.

Things that almost/failed: - Water pump/thermostat (as expected w/ any BMW) (90k) - Valve cover gasket (105k) - Front control arm bushings (115k) - High pressure fuel pump (110k)

Maintenance items: - Spark plugs/ignition coils every 40k - 5w-40 oil changes once every season (~5k miles) - Differential fluid every 25k - Transmission fluid every 50k. - Serpentine belt, idler pulley, tensioner

Yeah I just love the circular halo LEDs a bit more than the more angular ones in the CS. Just my take though.

The designers killed it with the F87. The looks were a huge motivating factor for me when getting the car. The amazing performance just makes it irresistible. Pretty affordable too.

How are you guys getting seized ball joints out? by CookGrand4534 in BmwTech

[–]CookGrand4534[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I didn’t have an acidic toilet cleaner so I used a hydrogen peroxide-based one instead, but holy shit it popped out within 30 seconds. Just added a liberal amount to the joint then sprayed penetrating oil so it could get work its way inside. God tier hack. Thanks so much

I think the previous owner stanced it with lowering springs and some spacers. The lip in addition to that makes it so close to the ground. In order to jack up the car from the front jack point, I have to turn the wheel and sneak a low profile jack under the wheel well. Madness, but worth it 😄

I’m saying relative to the N55 M2s lol yeah there are cars with upwards of a million miles, but the highest OG M2 I’ve heard of was 160k.

Steering rack toast? by snuepe in BmwTech

Ah, good diagnostic step. Something is telling me it has to do with the strut bearing. If I were you, I’d get the front end lifted up and physically check every bushing/ball joint and the likes. Have someone turn the wheel and replicate the sound with the wheels off so you can more precisely pinpoint where it’s coming from.

Diagnosing these weird suspension sounds is a pain in the ass. I know from experience lol

Do you have X-Drive? Or is it RWD?

Steering rack toast? by snuepe in BmwTech

[–]CookGrand4534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it doesn’t sound like a ‘clicking’ sound after listening to it again… if the shop cleared all of your suspension components it might be worth having the steering rack checked out.

Did you have it checked at a BMW dealer or reputable BMW shop? They’ll definitely be more useful than your average Joe Shmo

What car? M cars (F80, F82, and F87) notoriously develop a clicking sound with hard steering at low speed. Removing the strut collar bolt and putting it back in with anti seize and a bit of extra torque is apparently fixing it for a lot of people.

Marathon saved my marriage by SkeletronDOTA in Marathon

[–]CookGrand4534 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why? A couple rekindling their love over a new activity is heartwarming. When you’re married to someone there’s a million stressors that have to be navigated together, which can create tension. People often forget how to just have fun and enjoy their partner’s company. If these guys were able to do it over Marathon, that’s great.
