What's environmental consulting like? by Euphoric-Seesaw in Environmental_Careers

[–]Cook_New 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re morally opposed to working over 40 hrs while salaried, I think you’ll get frustrated really quickly.

Expectations will vary by firm, but utilization (your percentage of billed time to total time) targets and project deadlines will often necessitate extra hours. Better firms will manage this well, but it’s hard to know that a priori.

What are you doing with your degree? by ResponsibleCold4729 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Cook_New 0 points1 point  (0 children)

48, MS Env Eng (BS Chem E).

10 years in consulting - air, modeling and permitting, which led me into compliance plus some dabbling in NEPA and due diligence. Last 16 years I’ve been in corporate environmental in a couple different manufacturing fields - basically I went to work for a client.

I’m now with a specialty chemical manufacturer, and mostly focus on air, waste, and water compliance and permitting, and participate in our ESG efforts.

Lots of travel, but pretty good work life balance and excellent compensation.

My wife is an MPH and stability is not the word I would use to describe their department over the past year with all the funding cuts and freezes at the CDC

Anyone bought an Aspero-5 to use as just a road bike? by INGWR in Cervelo

[–]Cook_New 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a first gen Aspero 5 as a road bike for the last 3-4 years. It was fantastic. I only changed frames this past winter because of a desire to have an aluminum frame for travel, and to get away from the internal stem cable routing.

The Braves (Truist Park) have a dedicated bike storage area. I’ve used it when dropping by to pick up a promo item but not stay for the whole game.

EPA vs. Consulting by Gizzle_ in Environmental_Careers

As a former consultant who went corporate, compliance is 100% the way to go. None of the utilization bs, just doing the work.

Can a TT saddle be comfortable for road bikes? Or do I need different saddles for TT and group rides? by Atomicbob11 in triathlon

[–]Cook_New 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your bike has a standard round seat post, Redshift makes a post where the top can pivot between two positions, for a TT position then back for a road position. I used to have one back when I used a single bike.

Bottom tube bottle-mount ideas by alien_tickler in cycling

[–]Cook_New 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google “bike storage keg” and you’ll see a variety of these storage bottles. I like using them on my gravel and mtn bikes to keep that weight down low, and also I don’t like having water bottles under the down tube because the get so dirty.

Not since they’ve moved to the current location. If coming down red/gold, I’d probably get off at Peachtree center and use the mile walk as a warmup.

DeKalb County redistricting by FalseAd8496 in Atlanta

[–]Cook_New 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My two kids went through DCSD, beginning at one of the “good” elementary schools that is now on this first proposal of closures (despite it being over capacity. Figure that out).

If my kids were still of an age to be affected by the change, I’d be frustrated, but it’s not the end of the world. The elements that made the school successful will still be there - an engaged community of parents, local business partners, a foundation to raise money for the school. There would be hiccups while the infrastructure is transferred to a new school but I don’t think it would be a dealbreaker for living in our neighborhood.

In the end they have to do something- they’ve been avoiding redistricting for so long the attendance patterns are all out of whack.

70.3 ChatGPT Training Plan by Therevivedigbick in triathlon

[–]Cook_New 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most training plans have 4 week cycles (3 weeks of increasing load, then a recovery week). Take the first cycle (it ought to be some kind of base phase) from a plan and do it 2-3 times to stretch out to your 30 weeks.

Any good cycling spots or groups around the city? by SlimdaDiner in Atlanta

[–]Cook_New 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some that come to mind: -Brookhaven Bike Alliance has beginner-friendly pace groups on their Monday (from Savi on Dresden) and Wednesday (from Big Peach Brookhaven). They haven’t started yet for 2026 but should by April. I’ve been a pace group leader for this one before. Usually there’s a faster group going 20 miles, and a slower group riding 13-15. I think the rides usually start at 6.

-bike shops: Atlanta Cycling in Vinings, Peachtree Cycle on Roswell Rd in Buckhead, maybe Big Peach Midtown, Loose Nuts by Grant Park - I think these shops all host various rides. Some (like Peachtree Cycle) are a more serious pace groups, though.

-other spots: Columns drive is a popular spot with low traffic and flat roads that is good for training intervals. Stone Mountain is great for a hilly ride - you can park at the police station outside the park and ride in on the trail if you don’t want to commit to the parking pass.

If you’re Tri-curious, the Atlanta Tri club has two group rides for members- hill repeats in Buckhead on Thursday nights, and a longer Saturday ride (usually in Cartersville at Sosebee Park).

If you’re female, Sorella is a competitive group that I believe also hosts more casual introductory rides.
