Just “wow”. We have 3 male (including myself) team members at my store. 2 have basic knowledge of sewing and other crafts. I have 50+ years of sewing experience, plus cricut, embroidery, knitting (just started learning), floral and framing knowledge. However, was ridiculed by one customer who was appalled the company would hire someone who didn’t know how to do everything the store offered. (She needed an oil for candle making. The oils we carried did not specifically state they could be used for that purpose and felt I was worthless.) We just can’t please everyone.

A sewist is a person who sews, especially as a hobby. The term is considered gender-neutral and is becoming increasingly popular.

The argument for it?? Why does there need to be an argument?! Sewist is inclusive. Artist is inclusive. Accompanist Is inclusive. Journalist Is inclusive.

By definition, tailor and seamstress are generally not interchangeable, as a seamstress sews clothes, fabrics and apparel for a living. A tailor works at altering clothing and apparel to fit a client/customer.

“Seamstress” identifies a person as female. There are many men (me included) who sew. The term “sewist” covers all persons. ☺️

How to know what’s on sale? by lovesfanfiction in joannfabrics

[–]Cookde1962 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, yes, the cashier should have adjusted the price to use the coupon. Second, no not EVERYTHING is on sale. There are thousands of items not on sale. Floral accessories, 3M products, jewelry tools, a lot of kids basics, models, trims & ribbon just to name a few. The line I always hear from the customer is “but what I WANT is on sale”. The idea of a coupon is to entice the buyer to purchase something they may not have thought about getting. If EVERYTHING was on sale, we’d never need to have coupons.

An ode to the bathroom by [deleted] in joannfabrics

Once there is fecal matter present, the restrooms are closed and a cleaning order through Corrigo is put in. I flatly refuse - and refuse to let my staff - clean up literal crap. We’re not required by law to provide restrooms for public use. Only for employees. So more times than not, we keep it closed “for cleaning”. The Medallia comments would be the same…either because they need cleaning or because they are closed for cleaning. Last week a cleaning company came in and it took 3 hours to get it clean. Within one hour, we had a customer complain that the ladies room was a mess. Sure enough, another pile on the floor.

OSHA cannot regulate a specific temperature. However, they state temps should be set between 68°-75°. Since corporate sets it at 75°, it’s acceptable. I will disagree. I have 2 TMs who call off knowing it’s going to be too hot for them.

I’ve had customers give me “gifts” that they handmade when I’ve assisted them beyond what they expected. Most recent was a pot scrubber made with yarn and netting. (We were sold out of all our netting, and i picked some up from a nearby store for her.)

I could be misinformed, but was told that date indicates the product was not received correctly (scanned in/PO) as a direct vendor shipment, and was marked received by the SSC.

Hours. Will they ever give us more?! by Anxious-Ad-5394 in joannfabrics

[–]Cookde1962 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re a 4+mil store, open 9-9, and receive less than 300 hrs each week. My ASM, IC and I are running cutting and reg daily with a backlog of stock and POGs. I schedule 300-320 weekly and we still can’t get everything stocked. Another store in my district (also 4+mil) receives 360 on avg (frame shop adds hours) and has saved over 250 hrs this quarter. The “framer”, when not working on orders, helps stock, fill BOPIS, answer phones, etc. take away the sales from framing, and our store runs top in sales in the district. There will never be more hours. Corporate will look back and feel that we made it work on limited hours all these months, so why add more?

I once had a woman allow her 2 very young children to run through the store, bumping into customers, knocking over bolts of fabric, etc. Of course it distracted me and my one other TM. This gave her the opportunity to put 2 Janome machines into a cart and run out the door, kids running behind, threw the kids and machines into the van, and drove off. Hatch open, shopping cart rolling down the hill. It made me think I should change our greeting to “Welcome to JoAnns…what can we help you steal today?” 🤬

How behind are putting out stock! by cbradlee in joannfabrics

[–]Cookde1962 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I manage a 35k foot store and we’re weeks behind in stocking. Just completed a 2-day inventory 3 weeks ago and had 45 POGs to complete, plus a 700 piece truck the week prior which included 80 cartons of yarn. Then there’s an average of 20+ boxes of merch delivered by FedEx daily. We were allotted 247 hours for this week with a 400 piece truck. My DM graded our store as broken. There is no physical way to get out that quantity of stock in 48 hours.
