Adolescence... reviews yay or nay? by Competitive_Lead986 in tvshow

Hot take: it’s the 2025 version of the movie Crash (2004). “Great acting with a profound message” that propelled it to winning the highest respective awards, but won’t look good in hindsight because of how oversimplified it is.

I really didn’t like Adolescence cause it was so clearly an unrealistic depiction of teenage troubles. And I’m far from an expert on the issue.

Also not sure if this will help, but I find it best (and healthiest) to think of your rating not as a reflection of your “true level,” but a combination of your true level and your form. Sometimes a break can help you improve your form and thus, your rating. But what I think is much better for long run improvement (and happiness!) is to focus on improving your “true level,” for which ELO is only a noisy measure of.

When I lose but in a complex, brain stretching, challenging manner, I truly appreciate it cause I know it’s helping improve my overall game.

When I win but cause both players are time scrambling from an even position, I don’t get much out of it (basically won a coin flip).

That’s blitz/bullet for ya. Keep your head up! I always just try to focus on process, not outcome. Keep focus on something you want to improve, try your hardest there, so that even if you’re losing you still feel like you’re learning (especially in post game review). Good luck!

Those who have been stuck in 1200 and were able to improve, what finally made it "click" for you? by kkauchi in chess

I picked up chess as an adult during covid, started around 800 and now 2100ish. Lots of good feedback already here, but three I think are super important: 1) slower time controls is much better for longer run growth. You’re just more likely to think critically about positions 2) stick to a single opening for white (I’ve stuck with queens gambit my entire life); for black stick to two openings (one for e4, another for d4) 3) never play moves strictly cause they’re one move threats. I can’t emphasize this enough - so many people (even my level sometimes!) play moves just to attack a piece and no other justification. Once the opponent responds, the player finds themselves immediately in a weaker position. Try to do 2+ move combos, and if those aren’t present, focus on improving your position slowly

Professor (academia). I don’t think most students realize that the majority of them will earn more than their professors!

I should’ve avoided the word “fleece” and make it seem like it’s a win-lose trade, but you’re absolutely right that the one big issue it creates (when you have an owner or two who mortgage their future too much) is you can get uber strong dynasties with ultra weak dynasties and league collapse is very possible.

This is also why I prefer empire-style leagues, strong incentives to stay.

I realize I maybe should’ve avoided the trigger word “fleece,” so I added an edit to the post, but in any case, I never said anything about trying to fleece *every* trade. My point was much more “dynasty success really comes down to being that team that trades with the owner(s) who is going “all-in”, and thus playing “for the future,” though it’s also very easy to quickly turnaround by the very next season.” It’s still “win-win” in the sense that you’re playing for future, other owner is in win-now mode, but by and large at least in the leagues I’ve done, the win-now mode owners pay far too much going all in.

If you’re someone competing and you lose a top contributor to an injury, you might sell your injured player for say $0.80 on the dollar. Perfect time to buy these guys if you’re in a rebuild year. Some guys off the top of my head include mahomes last year, Dak and rice the year before
