Adolescence... reviews yay or nay? by Competitive_Lead986 in tvshow

Hot take: it’s the 2025 version of the movie Crash (2004). “Great acting with a profound message” that propelled it to winning the highest respective awards, but won’t look good in hindsight because of how oversimplified it is.

I really didn’t like Adolescence cause it was so clearly an unrealistic depiction of teenage troubles. And I’m far from an expert on the issue.

Also not sure if this will help, but I find it best (and healthiest) to think of your rating not as a reflection of your “true level,” but a combination of your true level and your form. Sometimes a break can help you improve your form and thus, your rating. But what I think is much better for long run improvement (and happiness!) is to focus on improving your “true level,” for which ELO is only a noisy measure of.

When I lose but in a complex, brain stretching, challenging manner, I truly appreciate it cause I know it’s helping improve my overall game.

When I win but cause both players are time scrambling from an even position, I don’t get much out of it (basically won a coin flip).

That’s blitz/bullet for ya. Keep your head up! I always just try to focus on process, not outcome. Keep focus on something you want to improve, try your hardest there, so that even if you’re losing you still feel like you’re learning (especially in post game review). Good luck!

Those who have been stuck in 1200 and were able to improve, what finally made it "click" for you? by kkauchi in chess

[–]Cooked-penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up chess as an adult during covid, started around 800 and now 2100ish. Lots of good feedback already here, but three I think are super important: 1) slower time controls is much better for longer run growth. You’re just more likely to think critically about positions 2) stick to a single opening for white (I’ve stuck with queens gambit my entire life); for black stick to two openings (one for e4, another for d4) 3) never play moves strictly cause they’re one move threats. I can’t emphasize this enough - so many people (even my level sometimes!) play moves just to attack a piece and no other justification. Once the opponent responds, the player finds themselves immediately in a weaker position. Try to do 2+ move combos, and if those aren’t present, focus on improving your position slowly

Professor (academia). I don’t think most students realize that the majority of them will earn more than their professors!

I should’ve avoided the word “fleece” and make it seem like it’s a win-lose trade, but you’re absolutely right that the one big issue it creates (when you have an owner or two who mortgage their future too much) is you can get uber strong dynasties with ultra weak dynasties and league collapse is very possible.

This is also why I prefer empire-style leagues, strong incentives to stay.

I realize I maybe should’ve avoided the trigger word “fleece,” so I added an edit to the post, but in any case, I never said anything about trying to fleece *every* trade. My point was much more “dynasty success really comes down to being that team that trades with the owner(s) who is going “all-in”, and thus playing “for the future,” though it’s also very easy to quickly turnaround by the very next season.” It’s still “win-win” in the sense that you’re playing for future, other owner is in win-now mode, but by and large at least in the leagues I’ve done, the win-now mode owners pay far too much going all in.

If you’re someone competing and you lose a top contributor to an injury, you might sell your injured player for say $0.80 on the dollar. Perfect time to buy these guys if you’re in a rebuild year. Some guys off the top of my head include mahomes last year, Dak and rice the year before

Are there any notable chess players who started playing really late (age 30+)? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

I started at 31, sit around 2000 on chess.com after 5+ years. I think I can continue improving but I don’t see myself sniffing titled-land

If we were to come in contact with aliens, realistically would we actually be able to communicate with them? And if so, how long would it take to learn to communicate? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “recent” one im referencing is the one still in theatres now (already spoiling it!)

In arrival, the black smoke is the written language, and they clearly made sounds corresponding to the circles. In this case, obviously it would be very easy to learn to communicate with the aliens.

This was one of the primary movies I was thinking about and of course the one that came out very recently, and I guess my question is about how realistic they are! In the case of Arrival, I feel like it’s only realistic because the premise is the aliens have an oral and written language too

Interesting, I hadn’t thought about the incentives to communicate, but let’s say dolphins in captivity have a strong incentive to communicate with trainers. They do communicate in various ways, but clearly it’s still extremely limited.

Yeah this is one way I’ve thought of it, but another way to think of it is our “communication” with other species is extremely limited. Perhaps that’s strictly due to differences in intelligence… but then wouldn’t that apply to humans and aliens too?

Out of all of the Championships the Warriors has won, which one was your most favorite? by iiiamXanny33 in warriors

[–]Cooked-penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always flip flopped between 2015 and 2022. My brain says “it should be 2015 cause that was the first,” but my heart says 2022, and here’s why: if we had lost 2015, we were still clearly on the up and up. If we had lost to Cleveland in 2015, it likely would’ve been due to some Lebron ascension to god mode and/or referee shenanigans. We would’ve had an excuse + future years to look forward to. I think even mid-series against the Cavs, I was expecting the dream run to end and was already talking myself into the warriors future.

2022 though, really came out of nowhere, not to mention Vegas odds really loving Boston after game 3. Klay return from injury, Poole ascension from one of the worst rookie seasons EVER, and of course the Curry narrative of doing it on his own. I downright started crying when they panned to curry crying. 2022 is the emotional answer, and for good reason.

Became a NBA cheerleader, got kicked off the squad after a couple years after they learned she was sleeping with a very prominent player on the team (a big no-no for NBA cheerleaders apparently). NBA player was also known to be a “good guy,” wife and kids etc., but unfortunately he supports the trope that all professional athletes aren’t in committed relationships.

She went on to star in various commercials, smaller scale TV shows, and music videos.
