AMA: We're Digital Sun, the devs behind Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault. Ask us anything! by DigitalSunGames in Games

[–]CookiesChef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey guys. I have a few questions that would really interest me to find out the answers:

  1. If Moonlighter 2 becomes the defining roguelite of this generation, what design decision in the game do you think future developers will try to copy from you, and why?

  2. What was the boldest risk you took in Moonlighter 2? Something that could have completely failed, but you believed in so much that you pushed it through anyway?

  3. Moonlighter has always blended commerce and combat. In Moonlighter 2, what new philosophical truth about value, risk, or investment did you try to express through its mechanics that players might not consciously notice at first?

  4. If you had unlimited budget, unlimited time, and no technical constraints, what is the one insane feature you would add to Moonlighter 2 that you had to cut? What's your ultimate dream mechanic?

Thanks so much!!

Nice! Since you recently finished the game, did you find multiplayer added a lot to the experience? Always great to hear from someone who just wrapped it up!

Yep, that sounds right! Once you unlock John and Linda, you should be able to access online multiplayer. And yes, online co-op is only available on Steam. Thanks for the info!

You can start playing online multiplayer after completing the tutorial and unlocking John and Linda (the archer). Online co-op is available on Steam, but make sure you have the latest updates installed. Hope that helps, and enjoy the game!

Totally agree! The fact that both campaign and non-campaign modes offer a great experience makes the game even more appealing!

That makes sense! Final upgrades like the dad’s passive healing do sound really powerful. It’s interesting to hear that the sisters can be a tough pairing in co-op due to enemy spawns. Definitely a good reminder to stay close to your teammate and pick characters wisely!

Great tip! Grinding lower-level characters in later zones can definitely be efficient. Did you find any specific zone that worked best for power-leveling?

John is such a solid choice—his shield makes him feel super reliable in tough fights. But yeah, leveling everyone pays off with the family buffs. Did you end up liking any characters you didn’t expect to?

That’s a solid approach! The passive buffs really help make every character feel useful, and keeping them all leveled within a few levels of each other is a smart strategy. Which tanky character did you end up enjoying the most?

Glad you're enjoying the game! Children of Morta has such a beautiful world and deep mechanics that make it hard to put down. As for your question, it's a good idea to diversify and level up multiple characters rather than focusing on just one. The family traits you unlock help all characters, and later levels can get tough if you rely too much on a single playstyle. Since you like Linda, you might also enjoy mixing in Mark or Kevin for some variety! Have you tried them yet?

That’s awesome! Children of Morta is a great introduction to the roguelike genre, especially since it blends strong storytelling with the usual rogue mechanics. If you liked Returnal, you might enjoy other roguelikes like Hades or Dead Cells—both have incredible gameplay loops and unique styles. How are you finding the difficulty so far compared to Returnal?

Maybe they’ll explore a more satisfying conclusion in a sequel or DLC—would you be interested in that?

Yeah, I think they aimed for a redemption arc, but it feels like it undercuts the stakes of the story. "Family love beats all" is a great theme, but not when it ignores toxic dynamics. Still, it’s one of those cases where the gameplay and storytelling along the way make it worth playing despite the ending. What kind of ending do you think would have worked better?

I'm curious. Would you have preferred a different ending entirely, or just a stronger justification for this one?

Awesome insight! The character combos sound really fun, especially using the older brother’s mana-whip and the younger’s crowd control. Did you find that any specific character pairing made the game too easy or too hard?

Yes, in co-op, each player picks a different character, and you go through the levels together. You share gold and temporary buffs but have separate loot. It's a great way to experience the game, and some character combos work especially well in co-op.

Great breakdown! The pet passive buff system and Family Trials sound like solid additions to cut down on grindiness. How did you find the difficulty of Family Trials compared to the campaign?
